Coca And Conservation: Cultivation, Eradication, And Trafficking In The Amazon Borderlands, David S. Salisbury, C. Fagan 2011 University of Richmond

Coca And Conservation: Cultivation, Eradication, And Trafficking In The Amazon Borderlands, David S. Salisbury, C. Fagan

Geography and the Environment Faculty Publications

The cultivation and traffic of coca, Erythrolxylum coca, and coca derivatives remain understudied threats to the conservation of the Amazon rainforest. Currently the crop is transforming land use and livelihoods in the ecologically and culturally rich borderlands of Amazonian Peru. The isolated nature of this region characterized by indigenous populations (both settled and uncontacted), conservation units, resource concessions, and a lack of state presence provides fertile ground for the boom and bust cycle of coca production and facilitates the international transport of the product to neighboring Brazil. This paper explores the social and environmental impacts of coca production, eradication, and …

Designing A Raw Water Fee Scheme For Groundwater Extraction In Cagayan De Oro, Philippines, Rosalina Palanca-Tan

Economics Department Faculty Publications

Our earlier study (Palanca-Tan and Bautista 2003) looked into groundwater depletion in Cagayan de Oro City (CDO) and the viability of collecting a raw groundwater fee to control the excessive abstraction of groundwater and to generate revenues to finance watershed preservation activities. This current study is an action research project that endeavored to push the CDO government to legislate and implement a raw groundwater pricing scheme as a resource management tool. The project included a hydrological study that was done to estimate the safe yield of the CDO aquifer. The hydrological study also aimed to equip our research team with …

Feasibility Study For Make-Up Water Quality For Cooling Tower By Electro-Coacgulation Process, Sasipim Manasilp, Cattaleeya Pattamaprom 2011 Chulalongkorn University

Feasibility Study For Make-Up Water Quality For Cooling Tower By Electro-Coacgulation Process, Sasipim Manasilp, Cattaleeya Pattamaprom

Applied Environmental Research

Cooling tower was a type of heat transfer equipment which was used to enhance heat rejection to the environment by increasing the surface contact between water and air. Water used in the cooling tower system had to be pretreated to prevent scaling and corrosion. As most factories in the northern part of Bangkok utilized both tap water and groundwater, which was known to contain large amount of minerals and suspended solids, water pretreatment was crucial before entering cooling towers or the heat-exchanging systems. Typical water pretreatment system consisted of sand filtration, carbon adsorption and ion-exchange resin adsorption to remove particles …

Efficiency Of Triple Superphosphate Fertilizer To Stabilize Cadmium In Different Soil Texture Characteristics, Chatchavaporn Yingsombat, Usarat Thawornchaisit 2011 Chulalongkorn University

Efficiency Of Triple Superphosphate Fertilizer To Stabilize Cadmium In Different Soil Texture Characteristics, Chatchavaporn Yingsombat, Usarat Thawornchaisit

Applied Environmental Research

This research investigated the effectiveness of Triple Superphosphate (TSP) as a stabilizing agent for cadmium (Cd) in three representative soils having different texture characteristics (loamy-sand, clay loam, and clay soils). Results showed that addition of TSP proved to be an effective method for reduction of Cd leachability in all Cd contaminated soils. The partitioning of Cd from the potentially available phase to the more stable phase was observed in all TSP treatments based on the sequential extraction data. Moreover, performance of TSP to immobilize Cd depended on soil types and compositions. The effectiveness of TSP to reduce Cd leachability was …

Effects Of Ferrocene On The Solubilization Of Alkanes In A Microemulsion System, Saravanee Singtong, Chantra Tongcumpou, David A. Sabatini 2011 Chulalongkorn University

Effects Of Ferrocene On The Solubilization Of Alkanes In A Microemulsion System, Saravanee Singtong, Chantra Tongcumpou, David A. Sabatini

Applied Environmental Research

Ferrocene is a metallic additive that has been used to boost the octane number of gasoline. Even though ferrocene is not an environmental contaminant of high concern, it can be found in soil contaminated with gasoline. Due to its organometallic nature, ferrocene may affect the phase behavior of other alkanes which has been contaminated to the environment and limit their removal using surfactant-enhanced aquifer remediation (SEAR). Therefore, the aim of this work was to investigate the effects of ferrocene on the solubilization capacity of alkanes in micellar surfactant solutions. The solubilization capacity and column study of alkanes with and without …

Factors For Improved Fish Passage Waterway Construction, David N. Sillars, Hamid Moradkhani, Nicholas Tymvios, Trevor D. Smith 2011 Oregon State University

Factors For Improved Fish Passage Waterway Construction, David N. Sillars, Hamid Moradkhani, Nicholas Tymvios, Trevor D. Smith

TREC Final Reports

Streambeds are important fish passageways in Oregon; they provide for the necessary habitats and spawning cycles of a healthy fish population. Oregon state law requires that hydraulic structures located in water properly provide fish passage. Increasingly stringent state and federal regulations apply to these fish passageways, and designers must become more cognizant of conditions over a range of flows to accommodate fish movement and avoid expensive structural failure of these passageways. Fish passage structures are built when roads cross streambeds and may include culverts, or bridges. When these structures are built, the streambeds are re-created using a technique called “roughened …

Sozialpolitik Nach Dem Verursacherprinzip : Beispiele Der Anwendung Bei Sucht, Gewichtsproblemen, Medikamentenmissbrauch, Arbeitslosigkeit, Prostitution, Isidor Wallimann

Books

Spatial Variations In Willingness To Pay For Water At The Local And Regional Scales Using Geographically Weighted Regression, Robyn Lane Dennis 2011 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Spatial Variations In Willingness To Pay For Water At The Local And Regional Scales Using Geographically Weighted Regression, Robyn Lane Dennis

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Two decades of rapid urban growth and increasing per capita water consumption has left water providers in Northwest Arkansas concerned about their ability to meet future demand for water. Beaver Water District (BWD) is the largest of four regional water providers that draw from Beaver Lake, the only source of potable water in the region. Growth projections and per capita consumption patterns indicate that BWD could exhaust its raw water allocation as early as 2031. Municipal water customers served by BWD were surveyed about their stated priorities for water use, their water conservation behaviors, and their attitudes and perceptions about …

Market-Led Development Versus Basic Needs: Common Property And The Common Good In St. Lucia, Jack Thornburg 2011 Benedictine University

Market-Led Development Versus Basic Needs: Common Property And The Common Good In St. Lucia, Jack Thornburg

Journal of International and Global Studies

This paper argues that contemporary development policies have failed to solve the problem of the maldistribution of economic resources, poverty, underemployment, and skewed income distribution. With the collapse of the Lomé Convention in 1996, St. Lucia saw its banana export market suffer a steep decline. Since then, Lomé St. Lucia has focused on market-led international tourism as the new engine of growth. Market-led development is fraught with economic cycles of up and down that lead to economic uncertainty and catastrophe for many people of limited resources. Much government revenue is spent on tourist-oriented infrastructure at the expense of a well-funded …

Mass Communications As A Vehicle To Lure Russian Émigrés Homeward, Simo Mikkonen 2011 University of Jyväskylä (Finland)

Mass Communications As A Vehicle To Lure Russian Émigrés Homeward, Simo Mikkonen

Journal of International and Global Studies

After the millions of wartime displaced citizens had been forcibly returned to the Soviet Union after the Second World War, the Soviet Union inaugurated a new type of campaign in the mid-1950s to get all the remaining Soviet citizens and former émigrés from Soviet occupied areas to migrate back. In this campaign, the Soviets used all the means of mass communication they were able to produce, especially radio combined with the press and direct contact with people. The campaign was not very successful, at least not among the people it was supposed to lure back: people residing in Europe. However, …
