Toxic Treasure Island: Finding Radium Instead Of Gold, Nicole Rejer
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
This presentation explores the Navy’s controversial use of radioactive materials in former decades on Treasure Island. It highlights the incomplete cleanup of contaminated soil and radioactive materials, and how current radiation measures are damaging to present-day residents’ health. Finally, it explains the city’s current plans for redeveloping the island, and how many public officials are ignoring the entire radiation problem, as long as other environmental issues Treasure Island residents face on a daily basis.

The Reclamation Of The Missouri Bootheel: The Formation Of The Little River Drainage District, Jillian J. Hartley
Student Theses and Dissertations
The reclamation of the Missouri Bootheel began in the early twentieth century with the formation of the Little River Drainage District, a publicly incorporated district that stretches across six counties in the Missouri Bootheel. The formation of the district occurred after timber companies deforested much of the land in the late nineteenth century. The district employed skilled engineers and contractors who used large dragline excavators to dig more than six hundred miles of ditches and canals. The formation of the district and the infrastructure it created altered and controlled the natural environment thereby facilitating the development of sustainable agriculture in …

The Ethics Of Environmentalism For The Individual Consumer, Molly Collins
Jepson School of Leadership Studies Research Symposium
Climate change harms the health of the environment and the well-being of humans. It is the poor choices of individual consumers that contribute to climate change conditions. I argue that it is immoral to cause harm to others, thus climate change is an ethical dilemma for individual consumers. Enforcement of climate change policies are therefore justified, as individuals who cause harm through consumer behavior are liable to punishment. I begin with a pluralistic discussion of harm, before discussing the duties of individuals to make choices that will mitigate the current harms of climate change and the wrong moral assumptions that …

High Performance Bayesian Applications In Medical, Economics And Climate Sciences, Ahmed Almulihi
Research and Creative Activities Poster Day
We apply high performance numerical integration to problems in Bayesian statistics. These are applied to data arising in the analysis of problems in such areas as medical statistics (birth weight data, heart transplant data, photocarcinogen data, radio therapy data), climate (global weather, tornado data), and general statistics applications (multivariate logistic distribution, multivariate normal, nonlinear regression). We compute Bayesian moment integrals using the ParInt integration software that runs efficiently on computer clusters. We compare our results to those in the literature and show excellent performance with respect to accuracy and execution time.

The Influence Of Environmental Ngos In The Global Society, Eric Becker
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
This paper assesses the over impact and influence of environmental NGO networks from the local to the global setting. Networks of various types of NGOs have developed and emerged in recent decades as significant actors in global politics. This paper looks at the impact these networks hold in both political and societal arenas such as the business practices of large multinational corporations. A qualitative analysis of several cases involving NGOs is conducted in a variety of arenas, assessing what actions or strategies were most affective, attempting to determine their overall effectiveness in promoting environmentally sustainable policies and practices while simultaneously …

Abstract
The Western Cape Department of Agriculture has a team of agricultural experts using novel approaches to address the challenges faced by South African agriculture. The objective of this paper is to describe some of the innovative research and technologies, and methods of technology transfer, used to better serve the agricultural community. The spectrum of technologies implemented includes new research on breeding (biotechnology); new approaches to conservation agriculture; remote sensing satellite and spatial information for improved decision making, such as the spatial intelligence project and FruitLook; Agricultural Integrated Management System; and technology to manage and disseminate information, such as smart …

Monetizing State Services To The Poor: Intentional Analysis Of Three Latin-American Conditional Cash Transfer Programs, Andrés Dapuez Ph.D., Sabrina Gavigan, Talita Eger
Journal of International and Global Studies
Conditional Cash Transfers (CCTs) have been described as fundamental to the “post-neo-liberal” turn in Latin America. Through an analysis of the stated and unstated goals of three CCT development programs in Latin America, Mexico’s Progresa-Oportunidades, begun in 1997; Brazil’s Programa Bolsa Familia (PBF), started in 2003; and Argentina’s Asignacion Universal por Hijo (AUH), started in 2009, this paper suggests that CCTs portend the continuation of longestablished economic monetarist policies in the region, providing poor families with meager amounts of money, barely sufficient for their subsistence. Despite the fact that progressive populisms in Brazil and Argentina have imbued cash transfers with …

Contesting The Political Economy Of Higher Education: Educating The Good Citizen, Alberto Nicotra, Fay Patel Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
In national and international sectors, citizenship is constantly contested, negotiated, and reinvented across geographical boundaries. Higher education institutions around the world have focused on embedding graduate outcomes that characterize the ideal global citizen across the curriculum. International mobility programs promote international staff and student exchanges as a strategy to develop global citizenship. This paper presents a critical review of the notion of global citizenship through the narrative of a doctoral graduate who made his journey as a good citizen within an international mobility context. A research network-based framework is proposed for the higher education sector to assess the impact of …
