This chapter explores the contributions that the Frankfurt School of critical theory has made to philosophical discussions about the meaning and injustice of poverty. Critical theorists interpret poverty to mean more than material deprivation, and they see its injustice as 2 extending beyond wrongful suffering and the threat to a human right to life to encompass psychological impoverishment and dehumanization. The chapter begins by examining critical theory’s historical roots in the Marxist critique of capitalism. The next section discusses early efforts by critical theorists to extend this critique to state-administered economies (capitalist and socialist) that have succeeded in sharply reducing …

This research examines how information and communications technology (ICT) has bolstered coastal resilience efforts across multiple sectors in coastal areas. Coastal vulnerability can be considered a wicked problem in society. Wicked problems are hard to define and solve and have broad social, economic, and environmental impacts. When dealing with wicked problems, planners have no right to be wrong since the outcomes can be detrimental and far-reaching. How Masculinity Beliefs Impact Lgbtqia+ Relationships, Louise Leonard

This research study looked at the masculinity beliefs of individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community and whether they were associated with participants’ relationship satisfaction. 85 participants completed questions from the Male Role Norms Inventory-Revised (MRNI-R) to determine their masculinity beliefs and the Couples Satisfaction Index (16-item version) to measure relationship satisfaction. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, correlation, and regression analysis. Our research hypotheses were that LGBTQIA+ individuals will have a low MRNI-R score (indicating less traditional masculinity beliefs) and that a lower score on the MRNI-R would correlate with higher relationship satisfaction. Forty-eight toddlers participated in a word-learning task to assess gesture input on mapping nonce words to unfamiliar objects. Receptive fast mapping and expressive naming for target object-word pairs were tested in three conditions – with a point, with a shape gesture, and in a no-gesture, word-only condition. No statistically significant effect of gesture for receptive fast-mapping was found but age was a factor. Two year olds outperformed one year olds for both measures. Only one girl in the one-year-old group correctly named any items. There was a significant interaction between gesture and gender for expressive naming. Two-year old girls were …

This 4-H case study takes place in a psychiatric residential treatment facility (PRTF) in Kentucky. The PRTF provides clinical services to youth that are not able to be safely maintained in their homes due to having demonstrated unsafe or harmful behaviors. Youth admitted to the PRTF stay for an average of three to six months while they receive intensive therapeutic and psychiatric care as well as medical treatment and public schooling. Closeness And Conflict In The Parent-Child Relationship And Parental Self-Efficacy During Childhood, Stephanie Boekweg

The present study examined the relationship between closeness in the parent-child relationship, conflict in the parent-child relationship, and parental self-efficacy during childhood. Quantitative data from an electronic survey on one hundred eighty-eight participants was collected. Results from a simple linear correlation indicated that parental self-efficacy during childhood and the parent-child relationship quality measures of closeness and conflict were moderately correlated. A simple regression showed that parental self-efficacy during childhood did not predict closeness nor conflict in the parent-child relationship when controlling for current parental self-efficacy. However, parental self-efficacy during childhood significantly predicted current-parental self-efficacy.

The current study examines patterns of gender representation through three categories (distribution, presentation, and stereotyped behaviors) in children’s media and how these patterns relate to preschool-aged girls’ internalized beliefs about gender. Both historical and presently available children’s media tends to display high levels of stereotypical gender representation. By preschool age, children have already developed distinctions between boys and girls, and hold internalized beliefs regarding gender. The household contract responsibility system which was the land reform policy from 1978 to 2008 in China revealed shortcomings in terms of its goals. This system veers away from the commune system (1958 -1978) and endows land use and management responsibility to households. In the context of local and global workforce and people skills competitiveness, this study sought to determine whether the Engineering Research and Development for Technology - University of the Philippines Los Banos (ERDT-UPLB) alumni are competent in their chosen employment fields. Using the Likert scale of measurement, the skills, knowledge, and attitude competencies of engineering graduates were compared to the preferred competencies of employers and potential employers. The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically influenced women’s experience of pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum phase. New research shows rates of postpartum depression were higher than typical during the pandemic. This study expands on existing research by examining postpartum depression at 12-30 months postpartum and exploring the role of perceptions of access to social support in predicting depressive symptoms.

This survey assessed postpartum women’s perceptions of the availability of supports during the COVID-19 pandemic and whether access to support was associated with experiences of postpartum depression 12-30 months after birth.
