Application Of Oscillographic Polarography To Determination Of Organic Phosphorus Pesticide Residues, Raymond J. Gajan

Some organic phosphorus pesticides have been determined successfully by polarography (1-7). However, in most cases the methods were used to determine the pesticide in commercial formulations. Little has been reported on the polarographic determination of microgram amounts of these pesticides such as those encountered in pesticide residue analysis.

Many of the methods used for the determination of these pesticides are nonspecific. They are based on cholinesterase assay (8- 12), radioactive tracer analysis (13, 14), total phosphorus (15-17), and paper chromatography (18-24).

Department of Agriculture estimates that 6.15 percent of the 1.8 million swine herds in the Nation are infected with brucellosis. The hemoglobin, red cell, total and differential leukocyte, serum protein, calcium, phosphorus and glucose values of the blood of several hundred healthy women 30 to 92 years in six North Central States were determined as one phase of a regional study of nutritional status. The mean, standard deviation and the 95 percent range (mean plus or minus two standard deviations), are shown for each constituent measured. The values for these healthy women tend to be slightly lower than values given as standards in textbooks. Differences between age groups were not significant.

The effect of a high unsaturated-low saturated fat diet on serum cholesterol levels were studied. Subjects were clinic patients receiving the following hypocholesterolmeic agents: triparanol (MER-29), diildothyroacetic acid (Diac), dextrothyroxine (d-T₄) and 3-methoxy-16, alpha-methyl-1,3,5, (10)-estratriene-16 beta, 17 beta-diol (Manvene or Anvene).

Fifteen hypercholesterolemic patients, eleven of whom were diabetic, were placed on diets with prescribed amounts of unsaturated fat. The caloric distribution was 40 per cent carbohydrate, 20 per cent protein, and 40 per cent fat. The level of unsaturated fat was 70 per cent of the total fat.

This has been a study in which it was attempted to determine the effect of slowly digesting food on the glucose tolerance curves of patients who had abnormal blood sugar levels.

The experimental method was used. Patients were selected by criteria which included certain symptomology and background of diabetic history. Fifty-two patients were prepared for glucose tolerance tests by a diet predominating in rapidly digested carbohydrates. This diet contained food which is commonly used in the American diet. With the growing interest in pellagra, following the authoritative recognition of its presence in the United States in 1907, the study of its etiology was taken up by various investigators and the several theories of causation were subjected to close scrutiny.
