Reducing Food Scarcity: The Benefits Of Urban Farming, S.A. Claudell, Emilio Mejia

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

Urban farming can enhance the lives of communities and help reduce food scarcity. This paper presents a conceptual prototype of an efficient urban farming community that can be scaled for a single apartment building or an entire community across all global geoeconomics regions, including densely populated cities and rural, developing towns and communities. When deployed in coordination with smart crop choices, local farm support, and efficient transportation then the result isn’t just sustainability, but also increasing fresh produce accessibility, optimizing nutritional value, eliminating the use of ‘forever chemicals’, reducing transportation costs, and fostering global environmental benefits.

Early Management Of Nutritional Deficiencies To Reduce Musculoskeletal Disabilities Of Pediatric Populations In Africa, Kristin Freitas Dec 2023

Early Management Of Nutritional Deficiencies To Reduce Musculoskeletal Disabilities Of Pediatric Populations In Africa, Kristin Freitas

Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc)

An estimated 1.3 billion individuals live with disabilities across the world, however many of these impairments are developed throughout childhood and could be prevented or treated with prompt and early intervention. In Africa, nutritional deficiencies are a common reason for disability in pediatric populations, often due to a limited supply of resources and diets high in grains and beans. This results in the development of genu varum and valgum deformities, which are most commonly caused by rickets attributed to calcium deficiencies in these areas. The children often go untreated, evidently causing musculoskeletal disabilities and further complications of osteomalacia or fractures …

Lifestyle And Dietary Modifications For Reducing Psoriatic Disease Activity: A Comprehensive Review, Andrea Nguyen, Jessica Garner Dec 2023

Lifestyle And Dietary Modifications For Reducing Psoriatic Disease Activity: A Comprehensive Review, Andrea Nguyen, Jessica Garner

Pacific Journal of Health

Abstract: Psoriasis is a prevalent, immune-medication disorder affecting millions of individuals in the United States, leading to substantial healthcare costs (Armstrong, 2021; Brenzinski, 2015). Psoriasis has an established correlation with comorbidities such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, obesity, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome (Al-Mutairi, 2010). Due to the substantial socioeconomic burden psoriatic disease poses on modern day society, significant benefit could be derived from identifying nonprescription strategies for patients to adopt in order to reduce disease activity. This comprehensive review includes 33 publications from 2008 to 2023, evaluating non-prescription therapeutic strategies including lifestyle modification and anti-inflammatory dietary changes. The analysis suggests …

Nutritional Strategies To Optimise Musculoskeletal Health For Fall And Fracture Prevention: Looking Beyond Calcium, Vitamin D And Protein, James Webster, Jack Dalla Via, Christina Langley, Cassandra Smith, Craig Sale, Marc Sim

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Falls and osteoporotic fractures are a major public health problem, particularly among older adults. A third of individuals aged 65 years and over fall at least once each year, with up to 20 % of these resulting in serious injury, including fracture. In conjunction with regular exercise, the importance of diet for musculoskeletal health has largely focused upon calcium, vitamin D, and protein, particularly in the context of preventing falls and fractures. Whilst there is evidence for the benefits of these nutrients for musculoskeletal health, other aspects of the diet remain largely underexplored. For example, vegetables are rich sources of …

Weight Bias In Pre-Professional Health Students, Heather A. Wemhoener Nov 2023

Weight Bias In Pre-Professional Health Students, Heather A. Wemhoener

Doctoral Dissertations

Weight bias includes negative attitudes or judgements towards people in larger bodies. It is associated with poor health outcomes. Weight bias is highly common in the United States, and pre-professional health students are known to exhibit it. Given its impact, finding effective interventions to reduce weight bias is important. The first paper reviewed literature on existing interventions for weight bias reduction. The search revealed three main intervention types: targeting attributions, increasing empathy, and targeting social consensus. Interventions, regardless of strategy, yielded mixed results for weight bias reduction, and, in some cases, increased bias. The second paper tested a novel intervention …

Culinary Medicine And The Promotion Of Plant-Based Diets: Is Caution Needed For Older Adults?, Wendy J. Dahl, Sayaka Nagao-Sato, Christina Riccardo

Nutrition Faculty Publications

Culinary Medicine (CM), which combines food, cooking, and the science of medicine1 for the management of chronic disease conditions, is an emerging practice area for health professionals, particularly physicians.2 Culinary skills and food-disease-related knowledge are enhanced by CM training3 ; however, there is much to learn regarding optimal program outcome measures.4 What cannot be gained from a CM program is the comprehensive nutrition knowledge that may be needed to ensure CM prescriptions result in benefits and minimize harm. This may be particularly important for older adults.

Beauty And The (Chemical) Beast, Abigail Novak Oct 2023

Beauty And The (Chemical) Beast, Abigail Novak

BUHealth

Cosmetics and personal care products (PCPs) are prominent in the daily lives of consumers. Unfortunately, there is a long history of toxic chemicals in these products that have caused serious adverse effects. As a result, the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FD&C) was created to help identify ingredients with safety concerns; this remains the primary source of regulation for cosmetics and PCPs today. No additional requirement exists for federal review of ingredients or adverse event reporting. As a result, questionable ingredients with potential safety issues can still be found in products. With these regulatory deficits, some companies have taken steps …

The Ups And Downs Of Weight Cycling: How Fad Diets Can Negatively Affect Health, Catherine Jasper

BUHealth

It’s advice nearly every patient has heard at least once in their life: you need to lose weight. Often, this is prescribed as a combination of a healthy diet and exercise. However, ‘fad diets’, so-called due to their fluctuating popularity from societal trends, are seen as quick and easy diet modifications that produce weight loss quickly. For some, these diets are not sustainable and can lead to dangerous cycles of losing weight, easing restrictions, and re-gaining weight that was lost. Weight-cycling is a dangerous effect of fad diets, and the long-term physical and psychological effects of weight cycling can ultimately …

The Effects Of Herbal Products In Cartilage Healing And Reducing The Progression Of Osteoarthritis, Mariya Baig, Mir Saleem

Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal

Treatment for osteoarthritis (OA) includes symptom management with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), opioids, and acetaminophen. However, these drugs pose health risks for long-term use, such as contraindications and gastrointestinal/cardiovascular issues. This systematic review of the literature was conducted to evaluate the impact of the herbal products, turmeric and ginger, in cartilage healing and reducing the progression of OA. It was found that turmeric and ginger can aid in symptom management for OA and promote cartilage regeneration, with turmeric extract yielding greater evidence-based results. Turmeric reduces the amount of pain and stiffness experienced from OA and can restore cartilage by subduing …

There are previous epidemiological studies reporting associations between antibiotic use and psychiatric symptoms. Antibiotic-induced gut dysbiosis and alteration of microbiota-gut-brain axis communication has been proposed to play a role in this association. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we reviewed published articles that have presented results on changes in cognition, emotion, and behavior in rodents (rats and mice) after antibiotic-induced gut dysbiosis. We searched three databases—PubMed, Web of Science, and SCOPUS to identify such articles using dedicated search strings and extracted data from 48 articles. Increase in anxiety and depression-like behavior was reported in 32.7 and 40.7 percent of the …
