Introduction: Space analysis and radiographic analyses are crucial elements in developing an orthodontic treatment plan. It is imperative that the orthodontist makes accurate measurements in order to come up with the most effective treatment options for each patient. Some practitioners refrain from direct measurements to determine arch length discrepancies and instead determine the amount of crowding by using direct visual approximation. In addition, more orthodontists do not routinely trace all cephalograms taken. Patients and parents in dentistry often do not remember important information disclosed during the informed consent process, so improvement in the delivery of information is needed. This study explored the effect of an emailed narrated instructional PowerPoint on the immediate vs. delayed recall and comprehension of informed consent information in orthodontics. Thirty-two subjects were recruited from a university and private practice orthodontic clinic. At the initial visit, subjects were alternately assigned to one of two groups and were presented with a mock orthodontic treatment plan and informed consent presentation for a pretend patient. Coil springs are used in orthodontics to deliver forces to move teeth. However, the optimal amount of activation to produce predictable, continuous deactivation forces, for the purpose of orthodontic tooth movement, is unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the deactivation force characteristics of nickel-titanium open-coil springs after varying levels of activation. Methods: Four open-coil spring products were evaluated: Dentsply GAC 100 gram and 150 gram, Orthoclassic Orthodontics Medium 150 gram, and American Orthodontics nickel-titanium springs. Introduction: Sealants are used in orthodontics to help prevent demineralization during treatment. The objective of this study was to determine if there is a difference in the shear bond strength (SBS) between two different resin sealants bonded to teeth. Materials and Methods: Extracted human premolars (n=20/group) were randomly divided and prepared by acid etching, followed by application of primer or sealant. Group 1, the control group, used Transbond XT Primer (3M Unitek). Groups 2 and 3 were prepared with the sealants L.E.D. Introduction: Mechanical vibration (MV) possesses anti-resorptive properties that can possibly enhance the stability of the dentition during retention, lessening the potential for relapse of teeth to their initial positions. In this project, we established a mouse model and investigated the effects of MV on bone modeling during orthodontic retention. Extraction of premolars is indicated as part of orthodontic treatment for patients who have severe crowding or protrusion of incisors. CBCT can be used to locate cephalometric landmarks in 3D. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there are differences in sagittal, transverse, and vertical skeletal and dental dimensions for adult patients who were treated with premolar extractions in conjunction with orthodontic treatment compared to those who received orthodontic treatment without extractions.

A 7-year 10-month-old boy with skeletal Class III malocclusion was treated in two phases. In phase one, rapid maxillary expansion (RME) and facemask was applied for early intervention in a cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) stage of CS2. After RME and facemask treatment, decompensation of maxillary and mandibular incisors was noted, as well as an improved skeletal Class III jaw relationship with reduction of the A point-nasion-B point (ANB) angle. Maxillary expansion is a common treatment option for upper crowded dentition and posterior lingual crossbite in children and adolescents. As the midpalatal suture is not yet completely interlocked at these ages, the midpalatal suture can be opened via maxillary expansion to increase the length and width of the upper arch. This solves the problems of posterior crossbite and upper crowded dentition. Since the midpalatal suture is stiff in adults, many clinicians believe that adults require surgical intervention to achieve maxillary expansion. The maxillary six anterior teeth play important roles in esthetics and oral function. Treatments for missing maxillary lateral incisors either by space closure or space preservation need multiple clinical considerations. This case report presents an orthodontic treatment of a 33-year-old female patient who had a convex profile with lip incompetence, missing lower molars and poor prognosis of bilateral maxillary lateral incisors. The atypical extraction in treatment plan consisted of removing lateral incisors instead of premolars to retract the anterior teeth. Objective: The aim of this study demonstrates an improved method for determining the exact molar positions on the lateral headfilm. Previously this position was located by visual inspection of the headfilm. We are testing the precision of visual determination compared to using occlusogram measurements. A 13-year-old female patient presented with a chief complaint of anterior crossbite and chin prognathism. She had a skeletal Class III relationship with a brachyfacial vertical pattern. Anterior crossbite exhibited maximum intercuspation–centric relation shift, leading to an edge to-edge incisal position. Impaction in maxillary central incisor is not as common in comparison with maxillary canine, whereas it causes more occlusal and esthetic impact due to its visible location. This case reported a combined surgical and orthodontic treatment on two horizontally impacted maxillary central incisors with dilacerated roots. The treatment included 2 stages. In the first stage, the dental space was regained and surgical exposure with closed eruption technique was applied. In the second stage, excisional gingivectomy combined with orthodontic traction were used to reposition both teeth into alignment. Introduction: This in vitro study evaluates the home bleaching treatment effect on the surface corrosion of stainless steel orthodontic brackets. Materials and Methods: Three types of brackets, 3M Unitek (U), Dentaurum (D) and Tomy (T), were immersed in either one of six bleaching treatments at 37 ℃ for 28 days. After immersion, the amounts of iron, chromium, and nickel ions released from the brackets were detected using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Class II division 2 malocclusion has low incidence rate of only 1% in Taiwan. The criteria of diagnosis and treatment consideration is more challenging as compared to other types of malocclusions. The case reported the use of improved super-elastic Ti-Ni alloy wire (ISW), which was developed by Tokyo Medical and Dental University, to correct a case of Angle Class II division 2 case with unstable mandibular position. This report illustrates a 20 years old female presented a Class II division 2 malocclusion with deep overbite, gummy smile, canted maxillary anterior occlusal plane, low mandibular plane angle and bilateral scissors-bite. Angle's Class II division 2 malocclusion needs to be treated by correcting the inclination of maxillary incisors and lower lip posture. A two-phase treatment comprising functional orthopedic therapy and fixed orthodontic therapy is often proposed for pubescent patients with Class II division 1 malocclusion. Mandibular retrognathism is a more common underlying cause of Class II skeletal discrepancy than the maxillary prognathism. In such cases, an activator is a widely used functional orthopedic appliances to enhance the mandibular growth. After resolving the sagittal problem by using the functional appliances, the biomechanical considerations of the anchorage requirement could be simplified in the second phase fixed appliance therapy, and the total treatment duration could be shorter. Accurately estimating the maturation of a midpalatal suture can improve the success rate of a maxillary expansion procedures. The craniofacial sutural maturation is an essential consideration in the choice between non-surgical and surgical methods of maxillary expansion. The maturation of a midpalatal suture can be assessed in several ways. This article reviews the literatures on the assessment of midpalatal suture maturation and its importance for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning.

Objective: Surgery-first orthognathic surgery is increasing in popularity because of reduced treatment time, efficient tooth decompensation, and early improvement in facial esthetics. However, it remains difficult due to the surgical occlusion setup. We systematically reviewed the literature in order to determine the guidelines used for surgical occlusion setup in orthognathic-first surgery for skeletal Class III deformity. High pull headgear with face bow has been a popular treatment modality for upper first molars distalization and anchorage enhancement. It can effectively inhibit the eruption of upper molars, enhance condylar growth to contribute a forward movement of the mandible and further improve the bite and lip incompetence. Clear aligner therapy (CAT) is an increasing popular alternative to conventional bracket therapy. This review summarized contemporary data regarding the history of CAT. The information regarding the advantages and disadvantages of CAT, biomechanical force and biological considerations, controlling orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) would be discussed in this review. The CAT is well accepted for their esthetics, comfort, good care of oral hygiene and periodontal status and suitable for interdisciplinary dental treatment.
