Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Malocclusion’s negative impact is not only limited to dentofacial appearance but also related to quality of life. Nowadays, orthodontic treatment can be done using conventional fixed appliances, or removable appliances called clear aligners. The preference for orthodontic appliances can be affected by several factors, including patient characteristics, self-perception, psychosocial, and oral-disorder factors. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the factors affecting the preference for orthodontic appliances among undergraduate students in West Jakarta. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 244 undergraduate students were retrieved by purposive sampling from 7 universities located in West Jakarta. A self-administered questionnaire was used to …

Characteristics Of Dentofacial Morphology In Bimaxillary Protrusion Patients, Chiung-Yu Chen, Hong-Po Chang, Yi-Hsin Yang, Yu-Chuan Tseng, Chin-Yun Pan, Szu-Ting Chou

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Objective: Dentofacial abnormalities, such as bimaxillary protrusion, can be distressing both socially and psychologically. The aim of this study is to identify the cephalometric features of bimaxillary protrusion and highlight the measurements that characterize bimaxillary protrusion when compared to a normal occlusion group. Materials and methods: Lateral cephalograms of 60 pretreated bimaxillary protrusion young adults were compared with 60 untreated young adults with normal occlusion. Male and female were equal in each group. Thirty-two landmarks were identified for 61 skeletal, dental and soft tissue parameters. The differences between the two groups were analyzed by means of Student’s t-test and two-way …

Orofacial Myofunctional Assessments In Adults With Malocclusion: A Scoping Review, Samantha C. Washington, Jayanti Ray Nov 2021

Orofacial Myofunctional Assessments In Adults With Malocclusion: A Scoping Review, Samantha C. Washington, Jayanti Ray

International Journal of Orofacial Myology and Myofunctional Therapy

Background: Breathing, chewing, swallowing, sleep, and speech disorders are known to be associated with malocclusions. Assessment protocols using non-instrumental evaluation of orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMD) in adults with malocclusions are almost nonexistent. Purpose: This scoping review aimed to determine the existence of scientific evidence demonstrating the areas of non-instrumental assessment of OMD in adults with malocclusion. Another purpose was to identify the protocols for assessing the nature of orofacial myofunctional assessments in adults with malocclusion. Methods: An electronic search was performed in the databases: MEDLINE, EBSCOhost, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Health & Medical Collection, Medline, Nursing and Allied Health Database, …

Orthodontists' And Parents' Perspective Of Occlusion In Varying Anterior-Posterior Positions: A Comparative Study, David H. Lindsey Jan 2017

Orthodontists' And Parents' Perspective Of Occlusion In Varying Anterior-Posterior Positions: A Comparative Study, David H. Lindsey

Theses and Dissertations

Objective: The purpose was to compare orthodontists’ and parents’ perception of orthodontic treatment outcomes in the anterior-posterior (AP) dimension. Assessment of treatment time and compliance were also investigated.

Material and Methods: Parallel surveys for orthodontists (n=1000) and parents (n=750) displayed occlusions from 3 mm Class III (Cl III:3) to 3 mm Class II. Participants rated occlusal relationships on a 100 mm VAS from least to most acceptable (0-100).

Results: 233 orthodontists (23%) and 243 parents (32%) responded. Orthodontists (mean=93.9, 25.9) and parents (mean=80.7, 40.9) rated Class I (Cl I) occlusion most and Cl III:3 least acceptable. No significant difference was …

Mesiodistal Crown Size In Relation To The Risk And Severity Of Malocclusion, Jon Robert Zang-Bodis May 2009

Mesiodistal Crown Size In Relation To The Risk And Severity Of Malocclusion, Jon Robert Zang-Bodis

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

From among numerous potential causes of dental malocclusion, tooth size has been implicated as one factor. Prior studies show that mesiodistally larger teeth increase the risk of malocclusion. The present report extends our understanding by testing for graded responses between crown size and the extent of dental malocclusion. Maximum mesiodistal crown dimensions of all 14 permanent tooth types (excluding third molars) were measured in 207 American white adolescents (routine orthodontic patients), and 10 measures of malocclusion (e.g., rotations, displacements, spacing) were recorded. Analysis of covariance (controlling for sexual dimorphism in tooth size) disclosed (1) significant positive associations between …

Influence Of Tooth Crown Size On Malocclusion, Michael Kelly Agenter May 2008

Influence Of Tooth Crown Size On Malocclusion, Michael Kelly Agenter

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Malocclusion is an increasingly common, multifactorial problem in industrialized countries. Although the causes of dental malocclusion are obscure in most instances, one contributing factor may be tooth size. While several researchers have studied whether tooth size contributes to malocclusion, there still is no consensus. Some have found that the mesiodistal widths of the mandibular incisor teeth are significantly larger in subjects with anterior crowding, while others have been unable to support this conclusion. Study designs often have been confounded by combining the sexes, which confuses sexual dimorphism with the supposed effect of tooth size on crowding. The present study tested …

Quantitative Analysis Of First- Versus Second-Premolar Extraction Effects In Orthodontic Treatment, Robert A. Turner May 2007

Quantitative Analysis Of First- Versus Second-Premolar Extraction Effects In Orthodontic Treatment, Robert A. Turner

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Malocclusions can involve arch-size tooth-size discrepancies that have to be resolved by premolar extractions. Treatment planning in such cases usually involves removing first (P1) or second premolars (P2). Choosing an extraction pattern is a learned skill that incorporates many diagnostic factors. This study compared the amounts of in-treatment tooth movement in two common extraction patterns (4/4 and 5/5) in order to gain insight into the criteria used for differential diagnosis and treatment planning. Objective: A method of cast analysis was developed to measure the anteroposterior and transverse changes in tooth positions during orthodontic treatment. Data were used (1) to …

Tooth-Size Discrepancy And Bolton's Ratios: A Literature Review, Othman S. A., Harradine N. W. Dec 2005

Tooth-Size Discrepancy And Bolton's Ratios: A Literature Review, Othman S. A., Harradine N. W.

Siti Adibah Othman

OBJECTIVES: To review the literature on Bolton's tooth-size discrepancies (TSD) with specific attention to the prevalence of TSD, and the possible influence of different classes of malocclusion, gender and racial group. Also examined were the validity of the standard deviations from Bolton's samples as an indicator of significant TSD, methods of measurement of TSD and their reproducibility. Based on the review, suggestions are made as to how future work could be improved. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Studies have reported from 20 to 30% of people with significant tooth-size anterior discrepancies and 5-14% for overall TSD. Bolton's original sample was appropriate for …

Overbite Correction And Smile Esthetics, Sherif Nabil Elhady Jan 2005

Overbite Correction And Smile Esthetics, Sherif Nabil Elhady

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this prospective clinical study was to investigate differences in outcomes from two common treatment modalities used to reduce deep overbite: maxillary incisor intrusion using an intrusion arch and posterior tooth eruption using an anterior bite plate and to assess their influence on smile esthetics. Pre-treatment and post-overbite correction records were gathered from 40 patients with deep overbite malocclusions at the Virginia Commonwealth University orthodontic clinic. Intrusion arch patients displayed significant reductions in maxillary incisor display accompanying documented incisor intrusion. Bite plate patients showed significant lower incisor intrusion and increases in the mandibular plane angle. When compared to …
