Patients often present to our practices with dental relapse of previous orthodontic treatment. Many times, the underlying skeletal and/or functional problems leading to the malocclusion were not addressed, causing the teeth to revert to their initial positions, even with good retainer wear. This patient presented with a severe lateral open bite and complained of problems chewing on his right side.

Previous orthodontic treatment with fixed orthodontics appliances and vertical elastics proved to be unstable. We recommended a treatment plan with surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE) to correct the skeletal maxillary constriction and provide more tongue space, followed by surgically …

Premature loss of a primary molar can cause a loss of arch perimeter and negatively impact the normal eruption path of premolars. Orthognathic Surgery And Quality Of Life Outcomes: Findings From A Hospital-Based Patient Satisfaction Survey, Parth D. Shah Dds, Mph, Victor M. Badner Dmd, Mph, Benn Lieberman Dmd

This study examined patient satisfaction and changes in quality of life (QoL) following the orthognathic surgery performed to treat severe dentofacial deformities. The short form of the oral health impact profile (OHIP-14) instrument was utilized to measure the negative impact related to severe dentofacial deformities on QoL. Ninety-five patients participated in this survey. Respondents reported significant reduction in the overall OHIP-14 score following the orthognathic surgery (p-value<0.0001). Approximately 92% reported post-operative resolution of their chief concerns. In conclusion, orthognathic surgery was found beneficial as it significantly reduced the negative impact of severe skeletal malocclusion on QoL of the patient we surveyed.

A New Appliance For Forced Eruption, Monira Uddin Dds, Natia Mosheshvili Dds, Stuart Segelnick

Individual Scholarship

The purpose of these case reports is to introduce an innovative orthodontic appliance to effect forced eruption. This device is useful when attempting to erupt teeth in the esthetic zone with minimal effect on adjacent teeth. It is especially indicated for adjacent teeth with esthetic restorations. The appliance is easy to fabricate, cost-effective and very useful in forced eruption efforts for the “nonrestorable” tooth.
