Growth modification by using removable orthopedic appliances has been commonly used in growing patients to correct maxilla-mandibular jaw discrepancy. Previous studies reported the different effects of various orthopedic appliances on the airway dimension. Low-pull headgear therapy may induce a short-term decrease of the upper airway dimension in Class II patients. Face mask therapy seems to be associated with the increase of upper airway dimension in growing Class III patients. However, mandible protruding appliances can increase the upper airway dimension, especially in the Class II patients with mandible retrusion.

The common treatment protocol for skeletal Class II malocclusion during mixed dentition is a two-stage treatment, namely functional appliance followed by fixed appliance. The goal of the functional appliance is to enhance the horizontal growth of mandible. After reevaluation, the second stage of fixed appliance is implemented. This is a 2-case report of skeletal Class II malocclusion. Both clinical examinations showed mandible retrognathia, large overjets and full Class II Angle’s molar relationships. Two-stage treatments were undertaken. After functional appliances, overjets were reduced and Class I molar relationships were achieved. The treatment timing is the most important factor in the correction of skeletal Class II malocclusion. The treatment effect in contribution of mandibular growth in the circumpubertal growth period is better than that in the pre-pubertal growth period in use of no matter what kind of orthodontic appliance. This report is a case of skeletal Class II malocclusion with mandibular deficiency. By using functional appliance (Activator) and fixed orthodontic appliance in the circumpubertal growth period, the malocclusion and retruded mandibular profile had been successfully improved.

The etiology of Angle’s Class II malocclusion are: 1.maxillary protrusion, 2.mandibular retrusion, 3.combination of both. The therapeutic methods of Angle’s Class II malocclusion with mandibular retrusion by using the functional appliance will correct neuromuscular dysfunction, remodeling of the glenoid fossa and enhancement of condyle growth by anterior positioning of mandible. In this case report will present a patient of Angle’s Class II malocclusion with mandibular retrusion. By using multiple functional appliances during active growth period to improve mandible forward positioned and the maxilla-mandible relation is altered. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of Class II correctors and functional appliances on the dentoalveolar support of the mandibular incisors during orthodontic treatment. Twenty six patients who were treated with a ForsusTM, Herbst, or MARA participated this study. Lateral cephalometric radiographs, limited field-of-view CBCTs, and periodontal measurements were collected both the day of appliance activation and day of appliance deactivation. The effectiveness of functional appliances is a debatable topic in the orthodontic literature, primarily because the benefits have not been consistently reproduced among clinical studies. The present study was a retrospective cephalometric analysis of patients with Class II, division 1 malocclusions at the start of treatment. There were 51 children treated by a single clinician with a MARA in combination with Edgewise appliances. The comparison group consisted of subjects treated with fixed Edgewise appliances only from the University of Tennessee, Department of Orthodontics. Early or two-phase orthodontic treatment of Class II malocclusions is a debated topic in orthodontic circles primarily because the benefits of early intervention have not been consistently reproduced among researchers. The present study was a retrospective analysis of cephalograms from patients with Class II, division 1 malocclusions at the start of treatment. These were 50 consecutively treated youths who received phase 1 (early) treatment with a Bionator appliance and later treatment with full appliances (all treated by a single clinician). “Early” or two-phase orthodontic treatment of Class II malocclusions is a highly debated topic in the orthodontic literature. We report here on a retrospective cephalometric study of patients with Class II, division 1 malocclusions. One group consisted of 32 consecutively treated patients who received “early” treatment with a Fränkel II appliance followed by treatment with full fixed appliance. These subjects were “matched” by sex and cephalometric value, to a subject treated with standard edgewise appliances in a single phase. Matching criteria focused on the bony facial characteristics, notably ANB, NAP, Y Axis, AOBO, FMA, overjet, and overbite. The question was …
