Objectives: This study aimed to examine the outcome and stability of the anterior open bite treatment with clear aligners. Methods: Fifty-two adult anterior open bite patients who underwent nonextraction clear aligner treatment were enrolled. All cases were retained with upper and lower fixed and vacuum-formed retainers. Eleven cephalometric measurements at pretreatment (T1), end-of-active-treatment (T2), and at least 1-year post-treatment (T3) were evaluated. The changes during the treatment and retention period were calculated. Results: Mean end-of-treatment (T2) overbite was 1.1 ± 0.7 mm. The mean change in overbite during treatment was 3.3 ± 1.5 mm. Background: Maxillary expansion has long been used in children and adolescents for transverse discrepancies and dental crowding. With age, the mid-palatal suture becomes increasingly mature, requiring heavy, rapid force in order to achieve skeletal expansion. As an individual grows into adulthood, it has been demonstrated that a skeletally anchored expander can be used in order to achieve successful sutural separation. The side effects between these two types of expanders, including dental tipping with relative extrusion of buccal segments and clockwise mandibular rotation, have been demonstrated to have differences in their degrees of severity. Introduction: This study was designed to analyze the cephalometric changes in adult Class III malocclusion treated with clear aligner therapy. Methods: In this retrospective study, thirty-six Class III adult patients treated with clear aligner therapy in private practice and a graduate orthodontic clinic were included in this study. Inclusion criteria included patients aged 18 years and older, Class III molar relationship that is end-on or greater, at least one anterior tooth that is in crossbite or incisors in an edge-to-edge bite, and complete records (initial and final lateral cephalograms) that are clear and traceable. Dental adhesives are water soluble, non-toxic materials that bind composite resins to dentin and enamel. Adhesive systems are dependent on a polymerization process at the interface and require different moieties to prepare the substrate to effectively interact with the tooth surface. Due to their critical role in restorative procedures, many chemists are interested in strengthening the adhesive bond strength at the interface. This review paper covers the evolution of dental adhesive systems over time and provides an extensive overview of what components make up a dental adhesive system. Boswellia trees, found throughout the Middle East and parts of Africa and Asia, are the source of frankincense oil. Since antiquity, frankincense has been traded as a precious commodity, but it has also been used for the treatment of chronic disease, inflammation, oral health, and microbial infection. More recently, the bioactive components of Boswellia trees have been identified and characterized for their effects on cancer, microbial infection (especially infection by oral pathogens), and inflammation. Chronic Periodontitis (ChP) is an inflammatory condition that results from oral dysbiosis and host immune dysfunction. Epidemiologic evidence has shown that men are more susceptible to ChP than women. Despite gender differences in behavior and socioeconomic status influencing oral health, the biological sex-associated immunological mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of ChP are unclear. The objective of this study is to identify sex differences in the immune responses to chronic periodontitis.

A large body of evidence shows the harmful effects of cigarette smoke to oral and systemic health. Recently, a link between smoking and susceptibility to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was proposed. Here, we examined the effects of cigarette smoke on SARS-CoV-2 infection in human gingival epithelial cells (GECs) to better understand the mechanisms involved in SARS-CoV-2 infection in cells of the oral cavity.

The objective of this study was to assess the cephalometric and transversal changes in growing patients (adolescents) using two different types of maxilla expanders: conventional rapid palatal expander (RPE) and miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expander (MARPE). Our null hypothesis is that there are no significant differences between the two groups for the molar inclination, maxilla expansion amount, and mandibular plane changes.

Orthodontic tooth movement leads to remodeling of periodontal ligament, alveolar bone, and gingiva. Tooth movement is characterized by bone deposition at sites of tension and bone resorption at pressure sites. Due to a sterile inflammatory process in the PDL space, a flow rate of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) is increased and its composition is modified. Various cell-signaling pathways are activated, which ultimately stimulate PDL turnover. Biochemical and cellular processes associated with orthodontic tooth movement may be better understood if we study changes of specific biomarkers in GCF during orthodontic therapy. The association between diabetes mellitus and periodontitis has been studied thoroughly. However, the role of the oral microbiome in linking these two diseases still is not clear. The objective of this study was to evaluate the amount of root resorption after orthodontic treatment in patients with Short Root Anomaly (SRA) in comparison with control patients using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). The epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a trans-differentiation process of epithelial cells into motile mesenchymal cells. It plays an integral role in embryonic development, wound healing and cancer progression. During EMT, epithelial cells lose their cellular polarity due to the loss of intercellular adhesion and acquire migratory and invasive characteristics associated with mesenchymal cells. EMT is tightly regulated by a number of distinct molecular processes which allow its initiation and progression to completion. These processes include activation of transcription factors, expression of specific cell-surface proteins, reorganization and expression of cytoskeletal proteins, production of extracellular matrix-degrading enzymes and changes in the expression …

Student-centered education requires timely identification of professional students not progressing appropriately in their chosen discipline. However, many institutions in the United States have been slow to develop “progress” exams designed to assess to test individual student progress towards graduation. Literature review found scant evidence of schools reporting design and implementation of such assessments. This paper shares the process piloted at one U.S. dental school to develop a case-based written exam, map test items to concepts/knowledge expected of students and evaluate the validity and effectiveness of the exam as a useful measure of learning progress. In December 2019, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was first identified as an acute infectious disease in Wuhan, China and subsequently led to an ongoing pandemic. At the onset of the pandemic, dental professionals were understood to face the greatest exposure risk to SARS-Cov-2 due to aerosolization of fluids from the oral cavity and respiratory airways . Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the varying levels of salivary statherin production in patients with varying levels of risk for diabetes. The goal is to identify a causal relationship and thus, statherin could be used as a preliminary biomarker for identifying patients with diabetes. Materials and Methods: Saliva from 47 participants were collected in order to quantify the levels of statherin production via western blot analysis. The aims of this study were to determine the efficacy of the KontrolFlexTM AccufileTM compared to the READY•STEEL™ Flexofile® using an electronic apex locator and to evaluate the instrument’s design via scanning electron microscopy. Actual canal lengths of thirty extracted teeth were determined under magnification. An alginate model was used to determine experimental canal lengths with the Root ZX II apex locator and size #10 Accufiles and Flexofiles. Differences between actual lengths and experimental lengths were compared with Student’s t test. This research explores final year dental students’ knowledge and attitudes towards the treatment and management of patients with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) as related to variations in the dental practices in Special Health Care Needs (SHCN) training they received. A quantitative, non-experimental study was conducted, employing survey data collection methods, to address descriptive, comparative, and correlational questions. One cohort, Class 2020, attended extramural rotations in specialized clinics for patients with I/DD and in-person lecture concerning this topic. The purpose of the study was to investigate and analyze some sources of validity evidence acquired from data (i.e., scores) of comprehensive clinical competency-focused components of the assessment system within the context of one school of dentistry through retrospective analysis of students’ data. Assessments in dental education need some form of evidence of validity to support the proposed interpretations of scores. The approach for evaluating evidence on test scores is presented as an argument, based on theory and logic, according to the four inferences in Kane’s view on validity: scoring, generalization, extrapolation, and implication. To evaluate structural profiles and mechanical behaviour of WaveOne Gold (WOG), Twisted File Adaptive (TFA) and XP-endo shaper (XPS) instruments after root canal preparation. Standardized in vitro shaping was performed in presence of 5.25% sodium hypochlorite. File morphology was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy; X-ray diffraction analysis was performed before and after use along with Raman spectroscopy. Nanoindentation was carried out to characterize surface topography. Ni2+ release was measured at 1, 3, 5 and 7 days. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis was done before and after use.
