A Review Of External Cervical Resorption, Sarah Makkiyah, Max Kazantcev
A Review Of External Cervical Resorption, Sarah Makkiyah, Max Kazantcev
Excellence Day
Invasive cervical resorption (ECR) is a complex form of external resorption. It is distinguished by its localization, its invasive nature, and the formation of a mineralized replacement tissue resembling cellular cementum. During initiation of ECR, the portal of entry is the cementum below the gingival epithelium, and resorption starts with localized destruction and removal of PDL. Response to PDL injury includes formation of a blood clot and inflammation, followed by granulation tissue, recruitment of macrophages, and multinucleated-cell differentiation.

Excellence Day
Nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCLP) occurs approximately in 1 of 700 live births. It has a serious impact on a patient during the whole life. It was shown that it can be prevented by supplementation of folic acid. However, much more needs to be known about etiopathogenetic factors and molecular mechanisms leading to NSCLP in order to personalize its prevention. Basic science information on etiology and pathogenesis of NSCLP was obtained from animal experiments. Clinical studies and trials showed efficacy of prevention by folic acid supplementation. A cell culture model is needed for studies on cellular …

The Effects Of Cigarette Smoke On Sars-Cov-2 Infection In The Oral Cavity – A Preliminary Literature Review, Youyoung Min
The Effects Of Cigarette Smoke On Sars-Cov-2 Infection In The Oral Cavity – A Preliminary Literature Review, Youyoung Min
Excellence Day
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been suggested to replicate and be found in the oral cavity. The objective of this preliminary literature review is to determine the effects of cigarette smoke on the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the oral cavity, and the risk for the overall health. SARS-CoV-2, which causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), uses the ACE2 receptor and protease TMPRSS2 for entry into host cells. The cigarette smoke condensates upregulates these receptors in human gingival epithelial cells. Because smoking can alter expression of COVID-19 viral entry genes, smokers are more susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Several …

The Role Of Nod-Like Receptors In Innate Immunity, Cassio Luiz Coutinho Almeida-Da-Silva, Luiz Eduardo Baggio Savio, Robson Coutinho-Silva, David M. Ojcius
All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles
The innate immune system in vertebrates and invertebrates relies on conserved receptors and ligands, and pathways that can rapidly initiate the host response against microbial infection and other sources of stress and danger. Research into the family of NOD-like receptors (NLRs) has blossomed over the past two decades, with much being learned about the ligands and conditions that stimulate the NLRs and the outcomes of NLR activation in cells and animals. The NLRs play key roles in diverse functions, ranging from transcription of MHC molecules to initiation of inflammation. Some NLRs are activated directly by their ligands, while other ligands …

Engineered nanoparticles (NPs) composed of elements such as silica and titanium, smaller than 100 nm in diameter and their aggregates, are found in consumer products such as cosmetics, food, antimicrobials and drug delivery systems, and oral health products such as toothpaste and dental materials. They may also interact accidently with epithelial tissues in the intestines and oral cavity, where they can aggregate into larger particles and induce inflammation through pathways such as inflammasome activation. Persistent inflammation can lead to precancerous lesions. Both the particles and lesions are difficult to detect in biopsies, especially in clinical settings that screen large numbers …

A Flash Of Inspiration: Enhancing Dental Student Drug Recognition, Benjamin D. Zeitlin
All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles
Students preparing for exams often retain the complexities of a subject but instant recognition and recall is something that, for most, takes time and consistent, repeated study to establish. This can happen through well-managed spaced learning (iterative study) prior to examination; given the preponderance of massed study (cramming for a subject),1 however, many students require long-term exposure in the clinic to patients’ medical histories to achieve instant recall. Understanding the applied pharmacology of common drugs is a current American Dental Association accreditation standard. Ideally, dental students should demonstrate a consistent level of basic drug recognition and the ability to retrieve …
