Vigorous Exercise Effect On Cardiovascular Health, Aryeh Mahana Jan 2015

Vigorous Exercise Effect On Cardiovascular Health, Aryeh Mahana

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Many studies examine the effects of vigorous cardiovascular exercise on the heart. Intense exercise causes frequent muscle contractions in the heart and specific biomarkers that usually signify a myocardial infarction are released into the bloodstream. However, studies indicate that there might not be a correlation between the release of biomarkers and cardiac function. Another study shows that long term vigorous exercise negatively affects the heart by dramatically increasing the mass and volume of the right and left ventricles, thereby resulting in hypertrophy. The cardiac hypertrophy is still evident even after the subjects have stopped exercising. Cardiac hypertrophy results in myocardial …

The Prevalence Of Adverse Cardiometabolic Responses To Exercise Training With Evidence-Based Practice Is Low, Lance C. Dalleck, Gary Van Guilder, Tara B. Richardson, Chantel A. Vella

Health and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of individuals who experienced exercise-induced adverse cardiometabolic response (ACR), following an evidence-based, individualized, community exercise program.
Methods: Prevalence of ACR was retrospectively analyzed in 332 adults (190 women, 142 men) before and after a 14-week supervised community exercise program. ACR included an exercise training-induced increase in systolic blood pressure of $10 mmHg, increase in plasma triglycerides (TG) of .37.0 mg/dL ($0.42 mmol/L), or decrease in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) of .4.0 mg/dL (0.12 mmol/L). A second category of ACR was also defined – this was ACR that resulted …

The Effects Of Jaw Clenching, Jaw Alignment Via Performance Mouthpiece, And The Combination Of Both On Power And Force Production, Charles Allen Jan 2015

The Effects Of Jaw Clenching, Jaw Alignment Via Performance Mouthpiece, And The Combination Of Both On Power And Force Production, Charles Allen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Jaw clenching has been demonstrated to elicit concurrent activation potentiation (CAP), which is the ergogenic advantage of increased prime mover muscular force production during physical activity. Further, jaw aligning mouthpieces have been shown to improve the force production capabilities of individuals with temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) and are purported to have similar effects on persons without symptoms of TMD. Previous research examining these phenomena has focused solely on jaw alignment via mouthpiece use or jaw clenching as mutually exclusive factors explaining the reported performance benefits. However, these factors do not appear to be mutually exclusive. No previously published investigations have …

Oncology Section Edge Task Force On Breast Cancer Outcomes: A Systematic Review Of Outcome Measures For Functional Mobility, Mary Insana Fisher, Jeannette Lee, Claire Davies, Hannah Geyer, Genevieve Colon, Lucinda Pfalzer

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

Background: Breast cancer treatments in women with breast cancer often result in physical impairments that lead to activity limitations and participation restrictions. These limitations and restrictions manifest in impaired functional mobility skills that may impact survivorship. Thus, evaluation of functional mobility is an important part of survivorship care.

Purpose: To identify functional mobility outcome measures that possess strong psychometric properties and are clinically useful for examination of women treated for breast cancer.

Methods: Multiple electronic databases were searched for articles published after 1995. Studies were included if they reported psychometric properties, used clinically feasible methods, were performed on adults, and …

Flow Through The Nasal Cavity Of The Spiny Dogfish, Squalus Acanthias, L. L. Timm-Davis, Frank E. Fish Jan 2015

Flow Through The Nasal Cavity Of The Spiny Dogfish, Squalus Acanthias, L. L. Timm-Davis, Frank E. Fish

Biology Faculty Publications

The nasal cavity of spiny dogfish is a blind capsule with no internal connection to the oral cavity. Water is envisioned to flow through the cavity in a smooth, continuous flow pattern; however, this assumption is based on previous descriptions of the morphology of the olfactory cavity. No experimentation on the flow through the internal nasal cavity has been reported. Morphology of the head of the spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) does not suggest a close external connection between the oral and nasal systems. However, dye visualization showed that there was flow through the nasal apparatus and from the excurrent nostril …

Blood Lactate Clearance During Passive Recovery With Kinesiology Tape Following Maximal Exercise, Marissa A. Miller Jan 2015

Blood Lactate Clearance During Passive Recovery With Kinesiology Tape Following Maximal Exercise, Marissa A. Miller

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

NTRODUCTION: Kinesiology tape is an elastic cotton blend fabric strip with an adhesive backing. Many different manufacturers claim that their product reduces muscle fatigue and increases blood flow by lifting the skin up off of the underlying fascia and capillaries. This lifting creates a low-pressure are a beneath the skin, referred to as the decompressed skin. Skin that is not decompressed (skin around tape)is said to have a higher pressure, causing the fluids to move from the areas of higher pressure to areas of lower pressure. This fluid dynamic is the basis for the claims that the tape increases blood …

Six Degree-Of-Freedom Analysis Of Hip, Knee, Ankle And Foot Provides Updated Understanding Of Biomechanical Work During Human Walking, Karl E. Zelik, Kota Z. Takahashi, Gregory S. Sawicki Jan 2015

Six Degree-Of-Freedom Analysis Of Hip, Knee, Ankle And Foot Provides Updated Understanding Of Biomechanical Work During Human Walking, Karl E. Zelik, Kota Z. Takahashi, Gregory S. Sawicki

Journal Articles

Measuring biomechanical work performed by humans and other animals is critical for understanding muscle–tendon function, jointspecific contributions and energy-saving mechanisms during locomotion. Inverse dynamics is often employed to estimate jointlevel contributions, and deformable body estimates can be used to study work performed by the foot. We recently discovered that these commonly used experimental estimates fail to explain whole-body energy changes observed during human walking. By re-analyzing previously published data, we found that about 25% (8 J) of total positive energy changes of/about the body’s center-of-mass and >30% of the energy changes during the Push-off phase of walking were not explained …

A Neuromechanics-Based Powered Ankle Exoskeleton To Assist Walking Post-Stroke: A Feasibility Study, Kota Z. Takahashi, Michael D. Lewek, Gregory S. Sawicki Jan 2015

A Neuromechanics-Based Powered Ankle Exoskeleton To Assist Walking Post-Stroke: A Feasibility Study, Kota Z. Takahashi, Michael D. Lewek, Gregory S. Sawicki

Journal Articles

Background: In persons post-stroke, diminished ankle joint function can contribute to inadequate gait propulsion. To target paretic ankle impairments, we developed a neuromechanics-based powered ankle exoskeleton. Specifically, this exoskeleton supplies plantarflexion assistance that is proportional to the user’s paretic soleus electromyography (EMG) amplitude only during a phase of gait when the stance limb is subjected to an anteriorly directed ground reaction force (GRF). The purpose of this feasibility study was to examine the short-term effects of the powered ankle exoskeleton on the mechanics and energetics of gait.

Methods: Five subjects with stroke walked with a powered ankle exoskeleton …

Effect Of Load Carriage On Tactical Performance, Justin M. Thomas Jan 2015

Effect Of Load Carriage On Tactical Performance, Justin M. Thomas

Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion

Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) operators are specially trained personnel that are required to carry equipment to perform high risk tasks. Given the need to carry this equipment, it is important to understand the potentially deleterious effect that the additional load may have on tactical performance. Furthermore, it is important to identify physical fitness characteristics that are associated with the potential decrement in performance. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of load carriage on tactical performance and identify fitness characteristics associated with any decrement in performance. Twelve male operators performed a simulated tactical test (STT) …

The Effect Of Fluid Periodization On Athletic Performance Outcomes In American Football Players, Christopher W. Morris Jan 2015

The Effect Of Fluid Periodization On Athletic Performance Outcomes In American Football Players, Christopher W. Morris

Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion

For decades strength and conditioning professionals have been seeking optimal training volumes and intensities to yield maximum performance outcomes without the onset of injury. Unfortunately, current studies apply experimental training techniques without considering the individuals’ response to the imposed training load. Due to the vast genetic variability and extraneous environmental factors that affect one’s ability to recover, results from such studies are controversial and inconclusive. Athlete monitoring systems offer an objective assessment that is purported to evaluate an individual’s physiological readiness to adapt to an overload stimulus and thus allow for daily manipulations in training loads (i.e., fluid periodization). However, …

The Effects Of Spinal Manipulative Therapy On Isokinetic Strength And Postactivation Potentiation, Grant D. Sanders Jan 2015

The Effects Of Spinal Manipulative Therapy On Isokinetic Strength And Postactivation Potentiation, Grant D. Sanders

Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion

Spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) is a therapeutic procedure employed by various healthcare practitioners for alleviating acute and chronic musculoskeletal complaints. This form of treatment is also delivered to enhance the performance and augment the rehabilitation of athletes. However, despite research findings alleging the strength-modulating effects of SMT alongside numerous professional athletes’ positive anecdotal claims concerning its results, the physiological processes to explain its effects remain largely unexplained. Therefore, the purpose of this work was to investigate the effects of SMT in a college-aged sample population with two experiments.

The first study examined the effect of SMT targeting the lumbosacral region …

A Preliminary Investigation Into The Relationship Between Functional Movement Screen Scores And Athletic Physical Performance In Female Team Sport Athletes, R.G. Lockie, A.B. Schultz, Samuel J. Callaghan, C.A. Jordan, T.M. Luczo, M.D. Jeffriess

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

There is little research investigating relationships between the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and athletic performance in female athletes. This study analyzed the relationships between FMS (deep squat; hurdle step [HS]; in-line lunge [ILL]; shoulder mobility; active straight-leg raise [ASLR]; trunk stability push-up; rotary stability) scores, and performance tests (bilateral and unilateral sit-and-reach [flexibility]; 20-m sprint [linear speed]; 505 with turns from each leg; modified T-test with movement to left and right [change-of-direction speed]; bilateral and unilateral vertical and standing broad jumps; lateral jumps [leg power]). Nine healthy female recreational team sport athletes (age = 22.67 ± 5.12 years; height = …

Altitude Exposure At 1800 M Increases Haemoglobin Mass In Distance Runners, Laura A. Gravican-Lewis, Iona Halliday, Chris R. Abbiss, Philo U. Saunders, Christopher P.J. Gore Jan 2015

Altitude Exposure At 1800 M Increases Haemoglobin Mass In Distance Runners, Laura A. Gravican-Lewis, Iona Halliday, Chris R. Abbiss, Philo U. Saunders, Christopher P.J. Gore

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The influence of low natural altitudes (< 2000 m) on erythropoietic adaptation is currently unclear, with current recommendations indicating that such low altitudes may be insufficient to stimulate significant increases in haemoglobin mass (Hbmass). As such, the purpose of this study was to determine the influence of 3 weeks of live high, train high exposure (LHTH) at low natural altitude (i.e. 1800 m) on Hbmass, red blood cell count and iron profile. A total of 16 elite or well-trained runners were assigned into either a LHTH (n = 8) or CONTROL (n = 8) group. Venous blood samples were drawn prior to, at 2 weeks and at 3 weeks following exposure. Hbmass was measured in duplicate prior to exposure and at 2 …

An Investigation Of The Quality And Quantity Of Student Motivation In Physical Education, Trey Douglas Willoughby Jan 2015

An Investigation Of The Quality And Quantity Of Student Motivation In Physical Education, Trey Douglas Willoughby

LSU Master's Theses

Physical inactivity is a prevalent problem in the United States associated with numerous health risk factors. Over half the population fails to meet prescribed physical activity recommendations, suggesting that individuals become less active as they age. It is important to observe individuals in the Physical Education setting because it is an ideal environment to provide meaningful physical activity, while promoting lifetime physical activity. This research sought to understand motivational behaviors in high school adolescents, attempting to draw links between physical education, student satisfaction, and leisure-time physical activity. Three research questions were present: (1) What relationships do high school student perceive …
