The Relationship Between Physical Activity And Flexibility, Tanya Marie Schramm
The Relationship Between Physical Activity And Flexibility, Tanya Marie Schramm
Student Work
The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between flexibility and physical activity levels. Subjects included 128 male (n=64) and female (n=64) volunteers, 19 to 55 years of age. All subjects completed a physical activity questionnaire (which differentiated between work, sport, leisure and total physical activity) and a series of five flexibility tests. Four of the five flexibility tests were completed with the use of a goniometer which measured shoulder flexion, hip flexion, knee flexion and ankle dorsiflexion. The sit and reach test was used to assess hamstring lumbar flexibility. After analyzing the data by using …
Association Of Exercise Identity With Measures Of Exercise Commitment, Dean F. Anderson, Charles M. Cychosz, Warren D. Franke
Association Of Exercise Identity With Measures Of Exercise Commitment, Dean F. Anderson, Charles M. Cychosz, Warren D. Franke
Warren D Franke
Role-identities are integral parts of the concept of self. Sociological traditions suggest that they serve to give meaning and importance to past behavior as well as providing direction for future behavior. This investigation examined the relationship of Exercise Identity with: age of subject, three measures of exercise commitment, and three physiological indicators of fitness. Data were collected from 448 of the 531 (84%) law enforcement personnel of a state department of public safety during annual physical exams at the university fitness clinic. Ninety-eight percent of the subjects self-identified as Caucasian and 96% were male (mean age = 39, range 21-63). …
Comparison Of The Emg Activity Of The Supraspinatus And Infraspinatus Muscles During Various Closed Chain Exercises, I-Chen Lin
Rehabilitation Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Advantages of closed chain exercises used in the lower extremity have been well documented. However, the effects of closed chain exercises on the upper extremities have not been studied very much. Thus, the purpose of this research is to analyze the EMG activity of the supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles and compare the relative amounts of activities by performing different isotonic closed chain exercises and an open chain exercise in normal subjects. The supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles in 1 o healthy subjects were studied with fine wire, intramuscular, electromyographic electrodes while performing 5 closed chain exercises and a D2. open chain …
Genetic Admixture And Gallbladder Disease In Mexican Americans, Marilyn Tseng, Robert C. Williams, Kurt R. Maurer, Moses S. Schanfield, William C. Knowler, James E. Everhart
Genetic Admixture And Gallbladder Disease In Mexican Americans, Marilyn Tseng, Robert C. Williams, Kurt R. Maurer, Moses S. Schanfield, William C. Knowler, James E. Everhart
Kinesiology and Public Health
Gallbladder disease is a common source of morbidity in the Mexican American population. Genetic heritage has been proposed as a possible contributor, but evidence for this is limited. Because gallbladder disease has been associated with Native American heritage, genetic admixture may serve as a useful proxy for genetic susceptibility to the disease in epidemiologic studies. The objective of our study was to examine thepossibility that gallbladder disease is associated with greater Native American admixture in Mexican Americans. This study used data from the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and was based on 1,145 Mexican Americans who underwent gallbladder ultrasonography …

Analysis Of Serotonin And Postural Instability In Parkinson’S Disease, Sandra Kuniyoshi
Analysis Of Serotonin And Postural Instability In Parkinson’S Disease, Sandra Kuniyoshi
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Postural instability is one of the most debilitating symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and the best clinical prognostic indicator of progressive disease. Significant differences in neuropathology, neurochemistry, response to L-dopa therapy and stereotactic surgery as well as prognosis have been identified in subtypes when patients with predominant postural instability and gait difficulty (PIGD)/Type B were differentiated from those with predominant symptoms of tremor and rigidity/Type A. Postural instability is resistant to the therapeutic effects of L-dopa, despite its continued efficacy on other Parkinson’s symptomatology, implicating the nondopaminergic mechanism of postural instability in Parkinson’s disease. Patients with significant postural instability and gait …

BACKGROUND: In Canada, primary care physicians manage most musculoskeletal problems. However, their training in this area is limited, and some aspects of management may be suboptimal. This study was conducted to examine primary care physicians' management of 3 common musculoskeletal problems, ascertain the determinants of management and compare management with that recommended by a current practice panel. METHODS: A stratified computer-generated random sample of 798 Ontario members of the College of Family Physicians of Canada received a self-administered questionnaire by mail. Respondents selected various items in the management of 3 hypothetical patients: a 77-year-old woman with a shoulder problem, a …

Energy Absorption During Running By Leg Muscles In A Cockroach, Robert J. Full, Darrell R. Stokes, Anna N. Ahn, Robert K. Josephson
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
Biologists have traditionally focused on a muscle's ability to generate power. By determining muscle length, strain and activation pattern in the cockroach Blaberus discoidalis, we discovered leg extensor muscles that operate as active dampers that only absorb energy during running. Data from running animals were compared with measurements of force and power production of isolated muscles studied over a range of stimulus conditions and muscle length changes. We studied the trochanter-femoral extensor muscles 137 and 179, homologous leg muscles of the mesothoracic and metathoracic legs, respectively. Because each of these muscles is innervated by a single excitatory motor axon, …

If I might speak for those who have had the privilege of giving this lecture before me, I can say that this is truly a humbling experience. To illustrate exactly how I feel this evening, I would like to relate a true story about one of my all-time favorite historical figures—Winston Churchill:
An Analysis Of Sponsorship Recall During Gay Games Iv, Brenda Pitts
An Analysis Of Sponsorship Recall During Gay Games Iv, Brenda Pitts
Kinesiology Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to determine if people attending the Gay Games could accurately identify the official sponsors. Sponsorship recall methodology was used, and a survey specific to the Gay Games was developed. Respondents included 182 people who identified them selves as a Gay Games athlete, spectator, or worker. Results were varied but showed an unusually high recall rate of the sponsors. Additionally, in relation to participant attitude toward the sponsors, the results showed a comparatively strong attitude toward new loyalty to a company or product as a result of the company's involvement in the Games: Ninety-two and …
Alcohol, Hormones, And Postmenopausal Women, Matthew P. Longnecker, Marilyn Tseng
Alcohol, Hormones, And Postmenopausal Women, Matthew P. Longnecker, Marilyn Tseng
Kinesiology and Public Health
Many women take supplemental estrogens after menopause, a practice called hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Moderate alcohol consumption may increase estrogen levels in women receiving HRT, potentially affecting their risk for various adverse health effects. Two recent studies, however, provide no strong evidence for an effect of alcohol on hormones in postmenopausal women. The possible association between alcohol consumption and risk of cancer of the breast does not appear to be mediated by estrogens. Both estrogens and moderate alcohol consumption have been associated with a decreased risk for cardiovascular disease; however, alcohol’s beneficial effect on heart disease does not appear to …

The purpose of this investigation was to compare frequency of colds and symptoms of upper respiratory infection in college students who have different levels of habitual physical activity. Subjects were Eastern Illinois University students (N=535, aged 18-25). A survey was conducted which included questions inquiring about demographic information, physical activity habits, the number of colds contracted the month before the survey, and symptom number and severity. Data collection occurred between February 12th and March 1st, 1998. This particular time period was chosen for several reasons, including that student stress level should have been lower than at the beginning or end …
Sense Of Effort Associated With Exercise In The Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Karen E. Wallman
Sense Of Effort Associated With Exercise In The Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Karen E. Wallman
Theses : Honours
Investigations into the mediators of effort sensation have indicated that central mechanisms related to corollary discharges may be responsible for an increased sense of effort during fatiguing isometric exercise. The role for central mediators for sense of effort have been objectively demonstrated through use of contralateral limb matching tasks. Subjects diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) often report prevalent fatigue associated with a greater sense of effort when involved in exercise. This study employed a fatiguing contralateral limb-matching task in order to determine if CFS subjects (n == 6) experienced an altered sense of effort associated with the task when …
A Comparison Of Measures In Physical Fitness And Biological Maturity Between Female Gymnasts And Females Not Involved In Organized Sport, Cara Kokenes
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in physical fitness and biological development between two groups of twelve year old females. One group consisted of idividuals who had been involved in competitive sport for at least two years while the other group was not involved in organized sport. Two groups of 20 subjects were examined in terms of height, weight, flexibility, strength, body composition, maturation, eating attitudes, and cardiorespiratory endurance. The results indicated that the gymnasts were significantly (p<.05) shorter, lighter, stronger in regard to left hand grip strength, lower in percent body fat, less biologically mature, and had greater cardiorespiratory fitness than the non-gymnasts. No significant differences were observed in right hand grip strength or eating attitudes. It was concluded that maturation level as well as gymnastic training played a major role in influencing values obtained through measurements of physical fitness.
