In order to selectively reduce the release amount of aldehyde compounds in mainstream cigarette smoke, the acetylated acetylated cellulose was synthesized on the base of microcrystalline cellulose. According to the aldehyde reduction effect, the synthesis conditions were optimized, and then the synthesized material were added in the cigarette filter tip. Results (1) The optimum synthesis conditions of acetylated acetylated cellulose were: cellulose ion concentration 5%, derivatization reagent molar ratio of diketenecellulose=21, the reaction time 3 h, reaction temperature 110 ℃, DMAP as catalyst. (2) When the acetylated acetylated cellulose material were added a dual-filter of cigarette at the amount of 30 …

Study On Isolation And Application Of Lactic Acid Bacteria Without Biogenic Amine Formation From Chinese Rice Wine, Xu Jianfen, Mao Jieqi, Wei Xiaolu, Liu Shuangping
Food and Machinery
In order to screen the strains without producing biogenic amines, some microorganisms were isolated from the fermentation mash and rice soaking water of Chinese rice wine. It was found that three strains had no amino acid decarboxylase activity, and had a certain ability of biogenic amines degradation. Moreover, the metabolic characteristics of the three strains were analyzed. The results showed that OD600 of the three strains reached a considerable level in the culture medium of 2.50%Vol. In the 8.80%Vol culture medium, strains 5-4 and 8-3 were inhibited whose OD600 was significantly lower than that of strain 14-2-1. In …

Adapting To The Changing World Of Biotechnology: Syngenta Ag Mir162 Corn Litigation As Regulation By Litigation, Paul Goeringer
Texas A&M Law Review
Agriculture has relied on plant breeding to improve genetics since the first domestication of agricultural plants 10,000 years ago. More recently, Gregor Mendel and his hybridization experiments on peas led to what we know as modern genetics. The rise in recombinantDNA technology has opened up many possibilities in plant breeding, including Roundup Ready technology and crop varieties designed to resist a number of pests. At the same time, governments and the private sector have sought to institute regulations for handling the releases of new biotechnology to ensure the technologies will have limited environmental impacts and provide safe foods to the …

Texas A&M Law Review
We live longer and healthier lives because advances in science create easier and better ways to sustain and survive. Society has an intricate relationship with biotechnology. Vaccines save lives. Fluoridated water decreases dental issues. Antibiotics treat bacterial infections. Nuclear power is a form of clean energy. With any emerging technology, the benefits do not exist in a vacuum, thus, negative consequences result as well. Our widespread uses of antibiotics are creating antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. Our research into nuclear energy also facilitated the creation of nuclear bombs. Perhaps it is human nature to use scientific advances for good and for …

Recognizing Challenges And Opportunities In The Quest To End Hunger, Jennifer Williams Zwagerman
Texas A&M Law Review
As an attorney and professor that does not focus on intellectual property law, I was a bit apprehensive about providing a keynote address for a Symposium focusing on “Agriculture, Intellectual Property, and Feeding the World in the 21st Century.” As I thought about this topic, knowing that there were other speakers who would focus more on the IP issues and technical aspects of various topics, I kept coming back to the importance of technology as we worktowards the goal of feeding the world, and the many ways in which innovation plays a role in meeting that goal. It also brought …

Seeds From Fresh Conventional Tomatoes Germinate Faster Than Dried Or Organic Seeds, Christopher G. Brown, Kautz Evan, Cameron Kilpatrick, Mary Vu, Mallory Weaver
Georgia Journal of Science
Conventionally-grown and organically-grown tomato seeds sourced from both fresh tomatoes and store-bought packages were germinated for seven days to evaluate the effect of seed source on germination rates. Seeds from fresh Roma tomatoes were prepared by allowing them to ferment in their own pulp for 24 hours, while commercially packaged dry seeds did not require any preparation. Once prepared, the seeds were spaced evenly on wet paper towels and stored in resealable plastic bags in groups of 10 for a total sample size of 100 seeds in each of four treatments. The number of germinated seeds and the length of …

Pituitary Genomic Expression Profiles Of Steers Are Altered By Grazing Of High Vs. Low Endophyte-Infected Tall Fescue Forages, Qing Li, Raquel Hegge, Phillip J. Bridges, James C. Matthews
Animal and Food Sciences Faculty Publications
Consumption of ergot alkaloid-containing tall fescue grass impairs several metabolic, vascular, growth, and reproductive processes in cattle, collectively producing a clinical condition known as “fescue toxicosis.” Despite the apparent association between pituitary function and these physiological parameters, including depressed serum prolactin; no reports describe the effect of fescue toxicosis on pituitary genomic expression profiles. To identify candidate regulatory mechanisms, we compared the global and selected targeted mRNA expression patterns of pituitaries collected from beef steers that had been randomly assigned to undergo summer-long grazing (89 to 105 d) of a high-toxic endophyte-infected tall fescue pasture (HE; 0.746 μg/g ergot alkaloids; …

Effect Of Ferulic Acid And Caffeic Acid On Acrylamide Formation And Elimination, Wu Haojie, Yu Miao, Huang Caihuan, Ou Shiyi
Food and Machinery
In this study, caffeic and ferulic acids were used to test the effect on acrylamide formation and elimination in model reaction systems. In asparagine/glucose reaction system, addition of caffeic and ferulic acid at the concentration of 25 mmol/L and 250 mmol/L inhibited acrylamide formation. However, they increased acrylamide formation below 2.5 mmol/L. It was found that both of phenolic acids increased acrylamide elimination when ferulic acid or caffeic acid were heated with acrylamide, but the effect is not obvious, so effect of caffeic acid and ferulic acid influenced on acrylamide content in Maillard reaction system mainly influence on acrylamide formation …

The Influence Of Purple Potato Starch On Bread Flour Rheology Properities And Gelatinization Characteristics, He Zhaowei, Liu Xiong, Zhao Tiantian, Shu Yuanfeng
Food and Machinery
This study aimed at the effects of purple sweet potato powder (PSP) with different amounts (namely null, 5%, 10%,15% and 20%) on the rheological properties and pasting properties of dough tested by farinograph, extensograph, and rapid viscosity analyzer. The results showed that addition of PSP significantly influenced the properties of a dough. With the increase of PSP, the rheological properties and gelatinization properties of the dough were improved, which means PSP could lessen the gluten thews and inhibit the gelatinization and expansion process of wheat dough. However, the PSP could rise the bibulous rates, and reduce retrogradation value, which could …
