Pecan shells are a rich source of various bioactive compounds with potential antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. This study investigated the effect of pecan variety and method extraction on the antioxidant property of shell extracts. Twenty different varieties of pecan shells were subjected to either aqueous or ethanolic extraction and were examined for total phenolics and antiradical activity. The phenolic content and antiradical activity of shell extracts were significantly (p < 0.05) varied with different pecan cultivars. The total phenolic content of ethanol extracts ranged from 304.2 (Caddo) to 153.54 (Cherokee) mg GAE/g of dry extract and was significantly greater (p < 0.05) than those obtained by aqueous extraction. The antiradical activity of ethanol extracts ranged from 840.6 (Maramec) to 526.74 (Caper Fear) mg TEg−1, while aqueous extracts ranged from 934.9 (Curtis) to 468.3 (Elliot) mg TEg−1. Chemical profiling of the crude and acid hydrolyzed extracts was performed by reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography and flow injection electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Lignin degradation products such as lignols, dilignols, trilignols, and oligolignols were found to be the major components of tested extracts. Phenolic content and antiradical activity of pecan shell extracts are significantly varied with cultivars and methods of extraction.

Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
Glycidyl esters (GEs) and 3-chloroprapane-1,2-diol esters (3-MCPDEs) are processing contaminants in refined edible oils that have raised concerns globally owing to their potentially carcinogenic properties. Official analytical methods for GEs and 3-MCPDEs, such as AOCS Cd 29a-13 and AOCS Cd 29b-13, require up to 16 h for chemical hydrolysis. Also, parallel experiments should be conducted to correct for the conversion of analytes during hydrolysis in AOCS Cd 29b-13. For AOCS Cd 29c-13 with the shortest operating time, the reaction time (3.5-5.5 min) and temperature of alkaline hydrolysis should be carefully controlled, implying the accuracy may be influenced by human errors. …

A Convenient And Sensitive Colorimetric Iodide Assay Based On Directly Inducing Morphological Transformation Of Gold Nanostars, Rongju Zhou, Xiaohui Huang, Qingxiao An, Weizhen Xu, Yi Liu, Dong Xu, Suyan Wang, Qinlu Lin, Jianglin Zhang
Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
We propose a convenient and easy colorimetric assay for highly sensitive detection of iodide by using gold nanostars (GNSs) as probes. The assay relies on that iodide directly changes the morphology of GNSs and alters their longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) without surface modifications and the use of other reagents. Upon increasing iodide concentration, GNSs gradually transformed to sphere gold nanoparticles, the absorbance at longitudinal LSPR decreased, and solution color varied from greenish blue to red, as confirmed by the UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. With this strategy, as low as 0.005 μM of iodide can be …

Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
Triple-negative breast cancers (TNBCs) lack specific targeted therapy options and have evolved into highly chemo-resistant tumors that metastasize to multiple organs. The present study demonstrated that the proline dehydrogenase (PRODH) mRNA level in paired (tumor vs. normal) human breast tissue samples (n=234) was 6.6-fold greater than normal cells (*p=0.021). We established stable PRODH-overexpressing TNBC (HS578T) cells, and the malignant phenotypes were evaluated using soft agar colony formation and Transwell migration assays. The results demonstrated that PRODH induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition in cancer cells and increased cell proliferation. The present study found that the tea polyphenol epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) significantly inhibited …

Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
The cancer-preventive activities of quercetin have been extensively studied in invasive breast cancer; however, the role of quercetin on triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) with overexpression of insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF1R) has not been resolved. In this article, we demonstrated that quercetin inhibited the activation of IGF1R and its downstream kinases Akt and Erk1/2 in a dose-dependent manner in human MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells (TNBC cell line). Related to this, quercetin markedly suppressed the metastatic phenotype and epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) of MDA-MB-231 cells by inhibiting the expression of EMT transcription factors Snail and Slug. Quercetin also increased the secretion of …

Three-Way Analysis-Based Ph-Uv-Vis Spectroscopy For Quantifying Allura Red In An Energy Drink And Determining Colorant's Pka, Erdal Dinç Prof., Nazangül Ünal, Zehra Ceren Ertekin
Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
Three-way analysis-based pH-UV-Vis spectroscopy was proposed for quantifying allura red in an energy drink product without the need for chromatographic analysis, and determining the colorant’s pKa without using any titration technique. In this study, UV-Vis spectroscopic data matrices were obtained from absorbance measurements at five different pH levels from pH 8 to pH 12 and arranged as a three-way array (wavelength x sample x pH). In the three-way analysis procedure, parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) was implemented to decompose the three-way array into a set of trilinear components. Each set of three components relates to spectral, pH and relative concentration profiles …

Plasmalogens are important phospholipids essential for maintaining cardiovascular and brain health. Ruminant meats are excellent dietary sources of plasmalogens. Globally, grilling remains a popular technique for preparing meats. However, little is known concerning how marination affects retention and quality of plasmalogens in grilled ruminant meats. Here we present information on effect of two unfiltered beer-based marinades infused with herbs and spices on plasmalogens in grilled beef and moose meats. Although total plasmalogen contents of marinated grilled meats were lower compared to unmarinated controls, compositionally, wheat ale- and India session ale-based marinades retained higher levels of PUFA plasmalogen PC (phosphatidylcholine) and …

We have demonstrated that red algae Gelidium amansii (GA) hot-water extract (GHE) is a polysaccharide-rich fraction, containing 68.54% water-soluble indigestible carbohydrate polymers; the molecular weight of major polysaccharide is 892. Here, we investigated the mechanisms of GHE on plasma and hepatic lipid metabolisms in high-fat (HF) diet-fed rats. Rats were divided into: normal diet group, HF-diet group, HF-diet+5% GHE group, and HF-diet+1% cholestyramine (positive control) group. GHE supplementation for 8 weeks significantly decreased plasma cholesterol, LDL-C, and VLDL-C levels and increased the fecal triglyceride and bile acid excretion in HF diet-fed rats. GHE group has lower lipid contents in the …
