Zero-Broadening Measurement In Brillouin Based Slow-Light Delays, Andrzej Wiatrek, Ronny Henker, Stefan Preußler, Max Ammann, Andreas Schwarzbacher, Thomas Schneider
Articles
A novel method for the achievement of zero-broadening in a SBS based slow-light system is discussed in theory and demonstrated experimentally. The system is realized just with a single broadened Brillouin gain. It is shown, that if the gain bandwidth is much broader than the initial pulse width, the output pulse width decreases with increasing pump power. A compression of approximately 90 % of the initial pulse width was achieved in simulation and experiment.

Theses
Micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) applications in radio frequency (RF) and microwave electronics are revolutionizing the progress in wireless communications. In particular, MEMS switchable/tunable capacitors can facilitate the realization of multistandard software defined transceivers, offering better performance than existing solutions.
In this thesis, characterisation and RF modelling of MEMS switchable/tunable capacitors and the technical requirements for their application in multiband wireless transceiver circuits in a software defined radio (SDR) are described. The first device considered is a curled cantilever capacitive switch, configured in both shunt and series configuration where the capacitance is limited to two stable states. The second device, …

Analysis And Design Of Low Power Cmos Ultra Wideband Receiver, Abdul Bhuiyan
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This research concentrates on the design and analysis of low power ultra wideband receivers for Multiband Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing systems. Low power design entails different performance tradeoffs, which are analyzed. Relationship among power consumption, achievable noise figure and linearity performance including distortion products (cross-modulation, inter-modulation and harmonic distortion) are derived. From these relationships, circuit design proceeds with allocation of gain among different sub circuit blocks for power optimum system.
A power optimum RF receiver front-end for MB-OFDM based UWB systems is designed that covers all the MB-OFDM spectrum between 3.1 GHZ to 9.6 GHZ. The receiver consists of a …

Scheduling Architectures For Diffserv Networks With Input Queuing Switches, Mei Yang, Henry Selvaraj, Enyue Lu, Jianping Wang, S. Q. Zheng, Yingtao Jiang
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
ue to its simplicity and scalability, the differentiated services (DiffServ) model is expected to be widely deployed across wired and wireless networks. Though supporting DiffServ scheduling algorithms for output-queuing (OQ) switches have been widely studied, there are few DiffServ scheduling algorithms for input-queuing (IQ) switches in the literaure. In this paper, we propose two algorithms for scheduling DiffServ DiffServ networks with IQ switches: the dynamic DiffServ scheduling (DDS) algorithm and the hierarchical DiffServ scheduling (HDS) algorithm. The basic idea of DDS and HDS is to schedule EF and AF traffic According to Their minimum service rates with the reserved bandwidth …

Free Regions Of Sensor Nodes, Laxmi P. Gewali, Navin Rongatana, Henry Selvaraj, Jan B. Pedersen
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
We introduce the notion of free region of a node in a sensor network. Intuitively, a free region of a node is the connected set of points R in its neighborhood such that the connectivity of the network remains the same when the node is moved to any point in R. We characterize several properties of free regions and develop an efficient algorithm for computing them. We capture free region in terms of related notions called in-free region and out-free region. We present an O(n2) algorithm for constructing the free region of a node, where n is the number of …
The Systemic Nature Of Action Learning Programmes, G Mwaluko
The Systemic Nature Of Action Learning Programmes, G Mwaluko
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
A lot of attention has been paid on action learning in the last four decades or so and the success of such programmes has also been widely publicized. But why have these programmes been so effective in helping organizations cope with change? Many authors state that the success of such programmes is due to the fact that they link learning to actions. Yet others claim that action learning programmes succeed because they involve employee empowerment and provide a much greater learning curve. In this paper the authors hold that action learning programmes succeed because they are partly systemic and can …

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
The goal of both IP network operators and the end users is to get the highest performance from the system for a given cost. This makes Performance a key criterion in the design, procurement, and use of computer and communication systems. In order to address problems associated with performance degradation of operational communications systems, over the last decade, traffic engineering techniques have emerged in an attempt to optimize communication systems’ performance and ensure more efficient use of their resources. One of these techniques is analytical modeling. Analytic performance models are an excellent tool for quickly evaluating the performance of operational …

A questionnaire was designed and manned in seven secondary schools in Dar-es-Salaam to estimate the Internet usage. Interviews were conducted to countercheck the questionnaire responses. The interview and the questionnaire helped to come up with a set of user requirements for the web-based interface of an online information search. From the specifications of the user requirements the author was …
Integrated Approach To Airborne Laser Communication, James A. Louthain
Integrated Approach To Airborne Laser Communication, James A. Louthain
Theses and Dissertations
Lasers offer tremendous advantages over RF communication systems in bandwidth and security, due to their ultra-high frequency and narrow spatial beamwidth. Atmospheric turbulence causes severe received power variations and high bit error rates (BERs) in airborne laser communication. Airborne optical communication systems require special considerations in size, complexity, power, and weight. Conventional adaptive optics systems correct for the phase only and cannot correct for strong scintillation, but here the two transmission paths are separated sufficiently so that the strong scintillation is \averaged out" by incoherently summing up the two beams in the receiver. This requisite separation distance is derived for …
A Three-Dimensional Pattern-Space Representation For Volumetric Arrays, William C. Barott, Paul G. Steffes
A Three-Dimensional Pattern-Space Representation For Volumetric Arrays, William C. Barott, Paul G. Steffes
Publications
A three-dimensional pattern-space representation is presented for volumetric arrays. In this representation, the radiation pattern of an array is formed by the evaluation of the three-dimensional pattern-space on a spherical surface. The scan angle of the array determines the position of this surface within the pattern-space. This pattern-space representation is used in conjunction with a genetic algorithm to minimize the sidelobe levels exhibited by a thinned volumetric array during scanning.
Effects Of Lline Rate On Vvideo Qos Over Wireless Networks: An Experimental Approach, Stuart Wallace, Mark Davis
Effects Of Lline Rate On Vvideo Qos Over Wireless Networks: An Experimental Approach, Stuart Wallace, Mark Davis
Conference papers
Video streaming over Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANS) is becoming an increasingly popular service. However, end user OoS is highly influenced by many factors. These include the video codec used, the packetization scheme, error concealment and correction techniques, the complexity of the video, propagation losses, and the line rate. In this paper the effect of the line rate on the capacity of the network when streaming multimedia content is analyzed experimentally. It is shown that as the line rate decreases the bandwidth load of the video stream dramatically increases leading to poor QoS at the client side. As automatic line …

Novel Variable Step Size Nlms Algorithms For Echo Cancellation, Mohammad Asif Iqbal, Steven L. Grant
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper we present two new variable step size (VSS) methods for adaptive filters. These vs.S methods are so effective; they eliminate the need for a separate double-talk detection algorithm in echo cancellation applications. the key feature of both approaches is the introduction of a new near-end signal energy estimator (NE-SEE) that provides accurate and computationally efficient estimates even during double-talk and echo path change events. the first vs.S algorithm applies the NESEE to the recently proposed Nonparametric vs.S NLMS (NPVSS-NLMS) algorithm. the resulting algorithm has excellent convergence characteristics with an intrinsic immunity to double-talk. the second approach is …

We theoretically predict and experimentally demonstrate inhibition of linear absorption for phase and group velocity mismatched second- and third-harmonic generation in strongly absorbing materials, GaAs, in particular, at frequencies above the absorption edge.
A 100-fs pump pulse tuned to 1300 nm generates 650 and 435 nm second- and third-harmonic pulses that propagate across a 450−μm-thick GaAs substrate without being absorbed.
We attribute this to a phase-locking mechanism that causes the pump to trap the harmonics and to impress on them its dispersive properties.

Clarifying The Use Of Formative Measurement In The Is Discipline: The Case Of Computer Self-Efficacy, Andrew M. Hardin, Jerry Cha-Jan Chang, Mark A. Fuller
Management, Entrepreneurship and Technology Faculty Research
The article offers insights on the use of formative measurement in the information system (IS) discipline. It focuses on the comment which warns researchers on the pitfalls of misapplying formative measures in information system domain as well as on the issues related to computer self-efficacy (CSE) and formative measurement. It then asserts that formative indicator weights are sued in determining the conceptual meaning of constructs and notes that the conceptual definition of CSE will likely differ as they are used in different research models and contexts.

Architecture For Intelligent Power Systems Management, Optimization, And Storage., J. Chris Foreman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The management of power and the optimization of systems generating and using power are critical technologies. A new architecture is developed to advance the current state of the art by providing an intelligent and autonomous solution for power systems management. The architecture is two-layered and implements a decentralized approach by defining software objects, similar to software agents, which provide for local optimization of power devices such as power generating, storage, and load devices. These software device objects also provide an interface to a higher level of optimization. This higher level of optimization implements the second layer in a centralized approach …

A Finite Queue Model Analysis Of Pmrc-Based Wireless Sensor Networks, Qiaoqin Li, Mei Yang, Hongyan Wang, Yingtao Jiang, Jiazhi Zeng
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
In our previous work, a highly scalable and fault- tolerant network architecture, the Progressive Multi-hop Rotational Clustered (PMRC) structure, is proposed for constructing large-scale wireless sensor networks. Further, the overlapped scheme is proposed to solve the bottleneck problem in PMRC-based sensor networks. As buffer space is often scarce in sensor nodes, in this paper, we focus on studying the queuing performance of cluster heads in PMRC-based sensor networks. We develop a finite queuing model to analyze the queuing performance of cluster heads for both non-overlapped and overlapped PMRC-based sensor network. The average queue length and average queue delay of cluster …

The 5 Ghz Airport Surface Area Channel: Part Ii, Measurement And Modeling Results For Small Airports, Indranil Sen, David W. Matolak
Faculty Publications
This paper describes results from a channel measurement campaign performed at several small airports in the U.S. in the 5-GHz band. This paper is a companion to another paper, which describes channel models for large airports. We classify the small airport surface channel into three propagation regions based upon different delay dispersion conditions. The channel characteristics of these regions in the delay and frequency domains are discussed with examples. We provide empirical stochastic channel models (of different bandwidths) to accurately represent the channel on the airport surface area for all propagation regions. The models are provided in the form of …
Improving The Availability Of Manufacturability Information Through Decentralization Of Process Planning, Eliab Opiyo
Improving The Availability Of Manufacturability Information Through Decentralization Of Process Planning, Eliab Opiyo
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Process planning is part of the general product development and production process that usually follows design and precedes manufacturing. Manufacturability and process planning information in general play central role in many product development and production activities, including paradoxically, conceptual and detail design - the activities that take place before process planning. The need of conducting some of the process planning activities formally before or during design is thus rather obvious. One of the main research issues is therefore the identification of the process planning activities that can be performed before the traditional process planning phase and handling of the process …

This chapter, taking FIR filters as an example, presents the discussion on efficiency of different implementation methodologies of DSP algorithms targeting modern FPGA architectures. Nowadays, programmable technology provides the possibility to implement digital systems with the use of specialized embedded DSP blocks. However, this technology gives the designer the possibility to increase efficiency of designed systems by exploitation of parallelisms of implemented algorithms. Moreover, it is possible to apply special techniques, such as distributed arithmetic (DA). Since in this approach, general-purpose multipliers are replaced by combinational LUT blocks, it is possible to construct digital filters of very high performance. Additionally, …

Vehicle-Vehicle Channel Models For The 5 Ghz Band, Indranil Sen, David W. Matolak
Faculty Publications
In this paper, we describe the results of a channel measurement and modeling campaign for the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) channel in the 5-GHz band. We describe measurements and results for delay spread, amplitude statistics, and correlations for multiple V2V environments. We also discuss considerations used in developing statistical channel models for these environments and provide some sample results. Several statistical channel models are presented, and using simulation results, we elucidate tradeoffs between model implementation complexity and fidelity. The channel models presented should be useful for system designers in future V2V communication systems.

Channel Modeling For Vehicle-To-Vehicle Communications, David W. Matolak
Faculty Publications
Physical layer channel modeling is critical for design and performance evaluation at multiple layers of the communications protocol stack. In this article we describe and provide results for modeling vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) wireless channels. V2V settings produce some unique conditions, and due to these conditions, V2V channels often exhibit greater dynamics than many conventional channels and, in addition, can also exhibit more severe fading. Thus, new channel models are needed to characterize this setting in order to evaluate contending transmission schemes and aid in V2V communication system design. A brief review of key statistical channel parameters is provided. Then both analytical …

A new multicarrier spread spectrum modulation scheme is proposed in this paper. This scheme uses sinusoidal chip waveforms to shape the spectrum of each subcarrier of a multicarrier direct sequence spread spectrum (DS-SS) signal. As a result, each subcarrier has two distinct spectral lobes, one a lower sideband (LSB) and the other an upper sideband (USB). By properly selecting the parameters of the sinusoidal chip waveforms, the two sideband signals can be made to undergo independent fading in a dispersive fading channel. These two independently-faded sideband signals, when combined at the receiver, provide diversity gain to the system. Our analysis …

Modeling And Characterization Of Adaptive Lanthanum-Modified Lead Zirconate Titanate (Plzt) Microlenses, Yasser A. Abdelaziez, Partha P. Banerjee
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
We report the modeling and characterization of adaptive voltage controlled electro-optic microlenses. First, we utilize finite element analysis (FEA) to simulate the induced electro-optic effect in lanthanum-modified lead zirconate titanate (PLZT). FEA simulation provides microlens parameters such as phase and focal length. A simple z-scan method is developed to fully characterize the adaptive voltage controlled linear lens. Experimental z-scan results are shown to match the theoretical predictions from FEA.

We discuss propagation effects in realistic, transparent, metallodielectric photonic band gap structures in the context of negative refraction and super-resolution in the visible and near infrared ranges. In the resonance tunneling regime, we find that for transverse-magnetic incident polarization, field localization effects contribute to a waveguiding phenomenon that makes it possible for the light to remain confined within a small fraction of a wavelength, without any transverse boundaries, due to the suppression of diffraction. This effect is related to negative refraction of the Poynting vector inside each metal layer, balanced by normal refraction inside the adjacent dielectric layer: The degree …
Effects Of Multipath And Oversampling On Navigation Using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed Signals Of Opportunity, Christopher M. Schexnayder
Effects Of Multipath And Oversampling On Navigation Using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed Signals Of Opportunity, Christopher M. Schexnayder
Theses and Dissertations
The Global Positioning System (GPS) has become the primary system for navigation and precise positioning. GPS has limitations, though, and is not suitable in environments where a line-of-site (LOS) path to multiple satellites is not available. Reliable alternatives need to be developed to provide GPS-like positioning when GPS is unavailable. One such alternative is to use signals of opportunity (SoOP). This concept refers to navigation using signals which inherently exist in the environment and were developed for non-navigation applications. This research focuses on exploiting the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed (OFDM) signal for the purpose of navigation. An algorithm was developed …

Throughput Enhancement Through Combined Fragmentation And Rate Method In Ieee 802.11b Wlans, Marek Bykowski, Karol Kowalik, Brian Keegan, Mark Davis
Conference papers
IEEE 802.11 allows for fragmentation tuning and rate selection. Their combined usage is referred sometimes to link adaptation. However, the algorithms of link adaptation are beyond the 802.11 standards. In this paper we investigate the benefits arising from proper use of link adaptation. Particularly, we develop a mathematical model describing the fragmented transmission in 802.11b. We examine potential benefits of it over AWGN and fading channels. More significantly we combine fragmentation tuning with bit-rate selection to yield the highest achievable throughput performance for any given channel conditions. Finally, we propose an algorithm that performs the optimal link adaptation.

Lightweight Objective Quality Of Voice Estimation Through Machine Learning, Daniel Riordan
Theses
Communication systems are undergoing constant and rapid innovation, both at the design stage and in the field. This in turn has led to an inereasing need for fast, efficient, portable and economic methods for the testing of these systems. For voice carrying communication systems the quality of the transmitted voice that the system produces is a large factor in the overall performance rating of the system. This measure is known as the ‘Quality of Voice’ (QoV) and can be evaluated either subjectively or objectively.
Speech quality is a complex subjective phenomenon that can be best quantified by subjective testing. A …
