Magnetic Field Aided Indoor Navigation, William F. Storms Feb 2019

Magnetic Field Aided Indoor Navigation, William F. Storms

Theses and Dissertations

This research effort examines inertial navigation system aiding using magnetic field intensity data and a Kalman filter in an indoor environment. Many current aiding methods do not work well in an indoor environment, like aiding using the Global Positioning System. The method presented in this research uses magnetic field intensity data from a three-axis magnetometer in order to estimate position using a maximum – likelihood approach. The position measurements are then combined with a motion model using a Kalman filter. The magnetic field navigation algorithm is tested using a combination of simulated and real measurements. These tests are conducted using …

Sound Based Positioning, David L. Weathers Mar 2017

Sound Based Positioning, David L. Weathers

Theses and Dissertations

With a growing interest in non-GPS positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT), sound based positioning provides a precise way to locate both sound sources and microphones through audible signals of opportunity (SoOPs). Exploiting SoOPs allows for passive location estimation. But, attributing each signal to a specific source location when signals are simultaneously emitting proves problematic. Using an array of microphones, unique SoOPs are identified and located through steered response beamforming. Sound source signals are then isolated through time-frequency masking to provide clear reference stations by which to estimate the location of a separate microphone through time difference of arrival measurements. Results …

Distributed Localization Of Active Transmitters In A Wireless Sensor Network, Oba L. Vincent Mar 2012

Distributed Localization Of Active Transmitters In A Wireless Sensor Network, Oba L. Vincent

Theses and Dissertations

In today's military environment, emphasis has been placed on bandwidth efficiency and total use of the available spectrum. Current communication standards divide the spectrum into several different frequency bands, all of which are assigned to one or multiple primary users. Cognitive Radio utilizes potential white spaces that exist between currently defined channels or in time. One under-explored dimension of white space exploration is spatial. If a frequency band is being used in one region, it may be underutilized, or not occupied in another. Using an active localization method can allow for the discovery of spatial white; trying to spatially map …

Routing Uavs To Co-Optimize Mission Effectiveness And Network Performance With Dynamic Programming, Spenser D. Lee Mar 2011

Routing Uavs To Co-Optimize Mission Effectiveness And Network Performance With Dynamic Programming, Spenser D. Lee

Theses and Dissertations

In support of the Air Force Research Laboratory's (AFRL) vision of the layered sensing operations center, command and control intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance (C2ISR) more focus must be placed on architectures that support information systems, rather than just the information systems themselves. By extending the role of UAVs beyond simply intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations and into a dual-role with networking operations we can better utilize our information assets. To achieve the goal of dual-role UAVs, a concrete approach to planning must be taken. This research defines a mathematical model and a non-trivial deterministic algorithmic approach to determining UAV …

A Linear Combination Of Heuristics Approach To Spatial Sampling Hyperspectral Data For Target Tracking, Barry R. Secrest

Theses and Dissertations

Persistent surveillance of the battlespace results in better battlespace awareness which aids in obtaining air superiority, winning battles, and saving friendly lives. Although hyperspectral imagery (HSI) data has proven useful for discriminating targets, it presents many challenges as a useful tool in persistent surveillance. A new sensor under development has the potential of overcoming these challenges and transforming our persistent surveillance capability by providing HSI data for a limited number of pixels and grayscale video for the remainder. The challenge of exploiting this new sensor is determining where the HSI data in the sensor's field of view will be the …

The Navigation Potential Of Ground Feature Tracking, Guner Mutlu Sep 2009

The Navigation Potential Of Ground Feature Tracking, Guner Mutlu

Theses and Dissertations

This research effort examines the reduction of error in inertial navigation aided by vision. This is part of an effort focused on navigation in a GPS denied environment. The navigation concept examined here consists of two main steps. First, extract the position of a tracked ground object using vision and geo-locate it in 3 dimensional navigation frame. In this first step multiple positions of the UAV are assumed known; think of a synthetic aperture. The only information about the tracked ground objects/features is the unit vector that points to the objects from the center of the camera. Two such vectors …

System Identification Of An On Orbit Spacecraft's Antenna Dynamics, Christopher M. Sylvester Jun 2009

System Identification Of An On Orbit Spacecraft's Antenna Dynamics, Christopher M. Sylvester

Theses and Dissertations

As a result of previous efforts [Pachter, Barba, 2007] a tight control loop was designed to meet performance specifications while minimizing the feedback control system’s gains of a spacecraft mounted flexible antenna. Emphasis is now shifted to on orbit system identification of the antenna dynamics in order to increase nominal plant knowledge, estimate plant uncertainty bounds, as well as determine the disturbance band. Non-parametric system identification is undertaken. Knowledge of the plant dynamics along with the corresponding uncertainty bounds will provide for the design of a control system which meets the specifications (tracking and disturbance rejection) while at the same …

Implementation Of Collaborative Rf Localization Using A Software-Defined Radio Network, Augustine A. Honore Mar 2009

Implementation Of Collaborative Rf Localization Using A Software-Defined Radio Network, Augustine A. Honore

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the use of collaboration between sensor nodes that were tasked with localizing a radio frequency emitter. Localization is a necessary component for dynamic spectrum access. Using a set of software-defined radios as our sensors and a received signal strength-based maximum likelihood localization algorithm, we successfully localized transmitting nodes based on their received signal strength. Our experiment was conducted outdoors using a flexible topology that could be shaped into 21 sub-topologies that varied in size, and orientation with respect to the transmitters. This was made possible through application of a time shift concept and a post-processing technique. We …

The Evaluation Of Rekeying Protocols Within The Hubenko Architecture As Applied To Wireless Sensor Networks, Cory J. Antosh Mar 2009

The Evaluation Of Rekeying Protocols Within The Hubenko Architecture As Applied To Wireless Sensor Networks, Cory J. Antosh

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the impact of using three different rekeying protocols–pair-wise, hierarchical, and Secure Lock within a wireless sensor network (WSN) under the Hubenko architecture. Using a Matlab computer simulation, the impact of the three rekeying protocols on the number of bits transmitted across the network and the amount of battery power consumed in WSN nodes during rekey operations is investigated. Baseline pair-wise rekeying performance can be improved by using either Secure Lock or hierarchical rekeying. The best choice depends on the size of the WSN and the size of the key used. Hierarchical rekeying is the best choice for …

Communication Free Robot Swarming, Zachary C. Gray Feb 2009

Communication Free Robot Swarming, Zachary C. Gray

Theses and Dissertations

As the military use of unmanned aerial vehicles increases, a growing need for novel strategies to control these systems exists. One such method for controlling many unmanned aerial vehicles simultaneously is the through the use of swarm algorithms. This research explores a swarm robotic algorithm developed by Kadrovach implemented on Pioneer Robots in a real-world environment. An adaptation of his visual sensor is implemented using stereo vision as the primary method of sensing the environment. The swarm members are prohibited from explicitly communicating other than passively through the environment. The resulting implementation produces a communication free swarming algorithm. The algorithm …

Automated Knowledge Generation With Persistent Surveillance Video, Daniel T. Schmitt Feb 2009

Automated Knowledge Generation With Persistent Surveillance Video, Daniel T. Schmitt

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Force has increasingly invested in persistent surveillance platforms gathering a large amount of surveillance video. Ordinarily, intelligence analysts watch the video to determine if suspicious activities are occurring. This approach to video analysis can be a very time and manpower intensive process. Instead, this thesis proposes that by using tracks generated from persistent video, we can build a model to detect events for an intelligence analyst. The event that we chose to detect was a suspicious surveillance activity known as a casing event. To test our model we used Global Positioning System (GPS) tracks generated from vehicles driving …

Effects Of Multipath And Oversampling On Navigation Using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed Signals Of Opportunity, Christopher M. Schexnayder Mar 2008

Effects Of Multipath And Oversampling On Navigation Using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed Signals Of Opportunity, Christopher M. Schexnayder

Theses and Dissertations

The Global Positioning System (GPS) has become the primary system for navigation and precise positioning. GPS has limitations, though, and is not suitable in environments where a line-of-site (LOS) path to multiple satellites is not available. Reliable alternatives need to be developed to provide GPS-like positioning when GPS is unavailable. One such alternative is to use signals of opportunity (SoOP). This concept refers to navigation using signals which inherently exist in the environment and were developed for non-navigation applications. This research focuses on exploiting the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed (OFDM) signal for the purpose of navigation. An algorithm was developed …

Characterizing The Impact Of Precision Time And Range Measurements From Two-Way Time Transfer Systems On Network Differential Gps Position Solutions, Kendra L. B. Cook Mar 2006

Characterizing The Impact Of Precision Time And Range Measurements From Two-Way Time Transfer Systems On Network Differential Gps Position Solutions, Kendra L. B. Cook

Theses and Dissertations

Precise positioning plays an important role for both military and civilian users, from cell phones and OnStar to precision munitions and swarms of UAVs. Many applications require precise relative positioning of a network of vehicles (such as aircraft, tanks, troops, etc). Currently, the primary means for performing precise positioning is by using the Global Positioning System (GPS), and although GPS has become commonplace in today’s society, there are still limitations affecting the system. Recent advances in dynamic Two-Way Time Transfer (TWTT) have potentially provided a means to improve precise relative positioning accuracy over differential GPS (DGPS)-only approaches. TWTT is a …

Performance Analysis Of A Cooperative Search Algorithm For Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Under Limited Communication Conditions, Kevin M. Morris Mar 2006

Performance Analysis Of A Cooperative Search Algorithm For Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Under Limited Communication Conditions, Kevin M. Morris

Theses and Dissertations

This research investigates the impacts of realistic wireless communications upon a group of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) utilizing a distributed search algorithm. The UAVs are used to survey an area for mobile targets and they require communication to cooperatively locate the targets. The mobile targets do not continually radiate energy, which exacerbates the search effort; a UAV could fly directly over a target and not detect it. A simulation of cooperative UAVs is implemented using the OPNET Modeler network simulation tool. The search performance of a group of UAVs is observed when communication range, data rate, and the number of …

Evaluation And Analysis Of Node Localization Power Cost In Ad-Hoc Wireless Sensor Networks With Mobility, Brian A. Sessler Mar 2006

Evaluation And Analysis Of Node Localization Power Cost In Ad-Hoc Wireless Sensor Networks With Mobility, Brian A. Sessler

Theses and Dissertations

One of the key concerns with location-aware Ad-hoc Wireless Sensor Networks (AWSNs) is how sensor nodes determine their position. The inherent power limitations of an AWSN along with the requirement for long network lifetimes makes achieving fast and power-efficient localization vital. This research examines the cost (in terms of power) of network irregularities on communications and localization in an AWSN. The number of data bits transmitted and received are significantly affected by varying levels of mobility, node degree, and network shape. The concurrent localization approach, used by the APS-Euclidean algorithm, has significantly more accurate position estimates with a higher percentage …
