Constructions of square, maximum rate complex orthogonal space-time block codes (CO STBCs) are well known, however codes constructed via the known methods include numerous zeros, which impede their practical implementation. By modifying the Williamson and Wallis-Whiteman arrays to apply to complex matrices, we propose two methods of construction of square, order-4n CO STBCs from square, order-n codes which satisfy certain properties. Applying the proposed methods, we construct square, maximum rate, order-8 CO STBCs with no zeros, such that the transmitted symbols are equally dispersed through transmit antennas. Recent advancements in the field of indoor positioning and mobile computing promise development of smart phone based indoor navigation systems. Currently, the preliminary implementations of such systems only use visual interfaces—meaning that they are inaccessible to blind and low vision users. According to the World Health Organization, about 39 million people in the world are blind. Cal Poly's satellites design team, PolySat, has three satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and four more planned to launch within the next two years. Radio communication of past and current orbiting satellites has been an exercise in frustration, prompting significant research into the satellite-side of the radio link by several other Senior Projects and Thesis papers. However, minimal effort has been spent on evaluating why these problems were discovered only once the satellites reached orbit. This research investigates the development and evaluation innovative methods for the use of conductive concrete as an electromagnetic shield. New testing methods are developed to determine the best conductive components to use in the design of a concrete mixture for shielding that shows the best promise. The conductive concrete mixture has the potential to provide electromagnetic shielding that is cost-effective in terms of construction, operation, and maintenance compared to conventional approaches. With performance still garnering much concern, a central idea has emerged: minimizing power consumption while maintaining performance. The use of dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) with parallelism has shown to be an effective way of saving power while maintaining performance. However, the potency of DVS and parallelism in traditional, clocked synchronous systems is limited because of the strict timing requirements such systems must comply with. The presence of acoustic noise in audio recordings is an ongoing issue that plagues many applications. This ambient background noise is difficult to reduce due to its unpredictable nature. Many single channel noise reduction techniques exist but are limited in that they may distort the desired speech signal due to overlapping spectral content of the speech and noise. A low-cost radio direction finding (RDF) VHF receiver has been investigated for development into a radio direction finding network (RDFN) with a particular focus towards public service and commercial asset tracking applications. The primary design criteria were reproducibility, low-cost, and simplicity such that public service and volunteer organizations can benefit from the technology. Two receiver designs were built and tested to allow for comparison of practicality, cost, and accuracy. The current generation of IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) provide multiple data rates from which the different physical (PHY) layers may choose. The rate adaptation algorithm (RAA) is an essential component of 802.11 WLANs which completely determines the data rate a device may use. Some of the key challenges facing data rate selection are the constantly varying wireless channel, selecting the data rate that will result in the maximum throughput, assessing the conditions based on limited feedback and estimating the link conditions at the receiver.

Several types of omni-directional Circularly Polarized (CP) antennas are presented, which are employed by three different types of feedlines: Coplanar Waveguide (CPW) fed, Microstrip fed, and Differential-fed, to achieve omni-directional CP performances. The Dual-frequency Omni-directional CP antenna is proposed by using slot and inductor embedded into radiated patches. A study into the effect of a solar cell lattice on the performance of an Inverted-F antenna is presented. An FR-4 substrate with a lattice of copper electrodes printed on one side and a solid copper ground plane on the other is used to represent a polycrystalline solar cell. In modern wireless communication systems, a base station typically serves a few hundred users within its cell coverage. To combat the near-far problem – the situation where a nearby user’s strong cellular signal masks the cellular signal of a faraway user – base stations continually enforce power control. That is, nearby users must lower their transmit power. In CDMA technology, power control can be as large as 70-80dB. The Schottky-PIN limiter has a ~8dB lower limiting threshold than the self-biased PIN limiter. Following the cessation of overdrive, the limiter requires some time to return to a low-loss state. This transitory state, which is known as the recovery time or blind/dead time, disrupts communication and causes information loss. Unlike the self-biased PIN limiter, there is a dearth of information pertaining to the recovery time of the PIN-Schottky limiter. This work characterizes the most popular form of the PIN-Schottky limiter and also proposes a simple modification to speed up its recovery time. We measured recovery times of >2000uS and 130uS …

Limiters can protect wireless receivers from physical damage and information loss. The Schottky-PIN limiter is especially protective because its limiting threshold is ~10dB lower than that of the self-biased PIN limiter. Unfortunately, the limiter diodes have parasitic capacitances that create insertion loss. Moreover, the extra diode in the Schottky-PIN limiter increases its loss over that of the PIN diode-only limiter. Techniques to minimize the parasitic capacitances include using bare chip, air cavity packaging, diode stacking, mesa construction, isolating the Schottky diode from the signal path and connecting the diodes to a low impedance node. We present our recent results in the area of distributed control over wireless networks. In our previous work, we introduced the concept of a Wireless Control Network (WCN), where the network acts as a decentralized structured controller. In this case, the network is not used only as a communication medium (as in traditional control paradigms), but instead as a fully distributed computational substrate. We show that the dynamics of the plant dictate the types of network topologies that can be used to stabilize the system. We present a distributed scheme used for control over wireless networks. In our previous work, we introduced the concept of a Wireless Control Network (WCN), where the network itself, with no centralized node, acts as the controller. In this work, we show how the WCN can be modified to include observer style updates which substantially improves robustness of the closed-loop system to link failures. In addition, we analyze how the WCN simplifies extraction of the communication and computation schedules and enables system compositionality and scalability.

Software issues related to automotive controls such as cruise control, anti-lock braking system, traction control and stability control, account for an increasingly large percentage of the overall vehicles recalled. Wireless networks-on-chips (WINoCs) hold substantial promise for enhancing multicore integrated circuit performance, by augmenting conventional wired interconnects. As the number of cores per IC grows, intercore communication requirements will also grow, and WINoCs can be used to both save power and reduce latency. In this article, we briefly describe some of the key challenges with WINoC implementation, and also describe our example design, iWISE, which is a scalable wireless interconnect design. We show that the integration of wireless interconnects with wired interconnects in NoCs can reduce overall network power by 34 percent while achieving a speedup of 2.54 on real …

This research addresses the use of mobile devices with both embedded and external sensors to provide contextualized help, advice, and remediation to learners engaged in real-world learn-by-doing tasks. This work is situated within the context of learning a complex procedure, in particular emergency responders learning to conduct urban search and rescue operations. Research issues include the design and delivery of contextualized performance support and the inferring of learner actions and intentions from sensor data to ensure that the right support is delivered just in time, as it is relevant to what the learner is doing.

With the rapid evolution of wireless networking, it becomes vital to ensure transmission reliability, enhanced connectivity, and efficient resource utilization. One possible pathway for gaining insight into these critical requirements would be to explore the spatial geometry of the network. This thesis proposes a new Channel-Aware MAC (CA-MAC) protocol that allows more than two simultaneous transmissions to take place within a single wireless collision domain. In this proposed work, Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system is used to achieve higher spectral efficiency. The MIMO-based PHY layer has been adopted to help in controlling the transmission and to avoid any collisions by using weights gains technique on the antenna transmission, and by recovering any possible collisions using ZigZag decoding. As feature sizes for VLSI technology is shrinking, associated with higher operating frequency, signal integrity analysis of on-chip interconnects has become a real challenge for circuit designers. For this purpose, computer-aided-design (CAD) tools are necessary to simulate signal propagation of on-chip interconnects which has been an active area for research. Although SPICE models exist which can accurately predict signal degradation of interconnects, they are computationally expensive. As a result, more effective and analytic models for interconnects are required to capture the response at the output of high speed VLSI circuits.
