Machine Learning-Based Design Of Doppler Tolerant Radar, Kyle Peter Wensell May 2024

Machine Learning-Based Design Of Doppler Tolerant Radar, Kyle Peter Wensell

Dissertations

In this work, machine learning theory is applied to the design of a radar detector in order to train a machine learning-based detector that is robust against Doppler shifts. The radar system is designed to work with data that would be otherwise intractable to conventional optimal detector design, such as transmitted noise waveforms and the effects of one-bit quantization at the receiver. The detection performance of the one-bit receiver is shown to match the performance of the derived square-law sign correlator detector. The resulting learning-based detector also introduces Doppler tolerance to the system, which allows for the successful detection of …

Detection Of Unauthorized Transmissions In A Frequency Spectrum Using A Wireless Sensor Network, Benjamin Roehrig, Joel Brinkman, Dylan Zupec, Jannette Gonzalez

Honors Capstones

A prototype for a wireless sensor network has been designed to detect and identify unauthorized wireless transmissions in a frequency spectrum. This prototype design is intended to detect unauthorized transmissions within the FM band of frequencies independently at individual nodes with Software Defined Radio receivers and transmit that information to a fusion center for aggregation using a Bluetooth Low Energy mesh network. Aggregated results will be displayed to the user through a Graphical User Interface at the fusion center.

A Primer On Software Defined Radios, Dimitrie C. Popescu, Rolland Vida Jan 2022

A Primer On Software Defined Radios, Dimitrie C. Popescu, Rolland Vida

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The commercial success of cellular phone systems during the late 1980s and early 1990 years heralded the wireless revolution that became apparent at the turn of the 21st century and has led the modern society to a highly interconnected world where ubiquitous connectivity and mobility are enabled by powerful wireless terminals. Software defined radio (SDR) technology has played a major role in accelerating the pace at which wireless capabilities have advanced, in particular over the past 15 years, and SDRs are now at the core of modern wireless communication systems. In this paper we give an overview of SDRs that …

Ofdm Simulation, Joseph W. Bednar Nov 2020

Ofdm Simulation, Joseph W. Bednar

Electrical Engineering

The project objective is to provide a tool that will allow the user to simulate an adaptive OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing) communication system in the presence of various types of interference and noise. The open-source code allows students and engineers to adjust the modulation, threshold settings, and distortion effects in the channel while observing the output bit error rate. The results the simulation provides will aid researchers in attempting to characterize the interference of OFDM based systems and their effectiveness in the presence of noise.

Low-Resolution Adc Receiver Design, Mimo Interference Cancellation Prototyping, And Phy Secrecy Analysis., Chen Cao May 2017

Low-Resolution Adc Receiver Design, Mimo Interference Cancellation Prototyping, And Phy Secrecy Analysis., Chen Cao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation studies three independent research topics in the general field of wireless communications. The first topic focuses on new receiver design with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADC). In future massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems, multiple high-speed high-resolution ADCs will become a bottleneck for practical applications because of the hardware complexity and power consumption. One solution to this problem is to adopt low-cost low-precision ADCs instead. In Chapter II, MU-MIMO-OFDM systems only equipped with low-precision ADCs are considered. A new turbo receiver structure is proposed to improve the overall system performance. Meanwhile, ultra-low-cost communication devices can enable massive deployment of disposable wireless …

Simple Secrecy: Analog Stream Cipher For Secure Voice Communication, John M. Campbell Apr 2015

Simple Secrecy: Analog Stream Cipher For Secure Voice Communication, John M. Campbell

Senior Honors Theses

Voice signals are inherently analog, and some voice communication systems still utilize analog signals. Existing analog cryptographic methods do not satisfactorily provide cryptosecurity for communication systems due to several limitations. This paper proposes a novel means of provided cryptosecurity for analog signals without digitization; thereby avoiding the latency which results from ADC/DAC conversions. This method utilizes the principles of the digital stream cipher, generating instead a continuous pseudorandom analog key stream signal which is transformed with the original analog signal to create an encrypted ciphertext signal which is statistically independent of the original signal and the key stream signal. The …

A General Framework For Analyzing, Characterizing, And Implementing Spectrally Modulated, Spectrally Encoded Signals, Marcus L. Roberts Sep 2006

A General Framework For Analyzing, Characterizing, And Implementing Spectrally Modulated, Spectrally Encoded Signals, Marcus L. Roberts

Theses and Dissertations

Fourth generation (4G) communications will support many capabilities while providing universal, high speed access. One potential enabler for these capabilities is software defined radio (SDR). When controlled by cognitive radio (CR) principles, the required waveform diversity is achieved via a synergistic union called CR-based SDR. Research is rapidly progressing in SDR hardware and software venues, but current CR-based SDR research lacks the theoretical foundation and analytic framework to permit efficient implementation. This limitation is addressed here by introducing a general framework for analyzing, characterizing, and implementing spectrally modulated, spectrally encoded (SMSE) signals within CR-based SDR architectures. Given orthogonal frequency division …

Development Of A Wireless Model Incorporating Large-Scale Fading In A Rural, Urban And Suburban Environment, Roger A. Illari Mar 2006

Development Of A Wireless Model Incorporating Large-Scale Fading In A Rural, Urban And Suburban Environment, Roger A. Illari

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this research is to develop a more realistic estimate of received signal strength level as calculated by OPNET. The goal is accomplished by replacing the existing free-space pathloss model used by OPNET with the Hata and COST-231 pathloss models. The calculated received signal strength using the new models behaves similarly to the measured values, with a 0.245 dB difference for 880 MHz and a 1.365 dB difference for 1922 MHz between the pathloss slopes. There is an 11.3 dBm difference between the initial starting signal strength from the calculated values and the measured values. An important aspect …

A Multiplier-Less Architecture For High Speed Computation Of Multi-Dimensional Convolution, Ming Zhu Zhang Jul 2005

A Multiplier-Less Architecture For High Speed Computation Of Multi-Dimensional Convolution, Ming Zhu Zhang

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

One of the most computationally intensive operations in digital image/video processing systems is multi-dimensional convolution. Every image/video processor needs the convolution module in its pre-processing stage. Fast and efficient design of the convolution module in an application specific system is a great challenge in VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) design. Convolution operator requires a large set of multipliers and accumulators. A high precision multiplier takes enormous amount of VLSI area and it consumes more power. Hence reduction of the number of multipliers is another important challenge in VLSI design. A multiplier-less architecture for the design of a multi-dimensional convolution module …

Applications Of Lattice Filters To Quadrature Mirror Filter Banks, Gregory R. Jaspers Jan 1988

Applications Of Lattice Filters To Quadrature Mirror Filter Banks, Gregory R. Jaspers

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Presented is a method for designing and implementing lattice filters to be used in Quadrature Mirror Filter (QMF) Banks. Quadrature Mirror Filter Banks find use in applications where a signal must be spilt into subbands operated on then reconstructed in the output. Because of their structure, lattice filters do this very well and allow perfect reconstruction, even when the lattice coefficients must be quantized. In this paper QMF's and Lattice Filters are derived and analyzed. Application of the lattice filter is presented along with a design program and example of its use to implement a QMF. The computer aided design …
