Static And Dynamic Component Obfuscation On Reconfigurable Devices, Camdon R. Cady Mar 2010

Static And Dynamic Component Obfuscation On Reconfigurable Devices, Camdon R. Cady

Theses and Dissertations

Computing systems are used in virtually every aspect of our lives. Technology such as smart phones and electronically controlled subsystems in cars is becoming so commonly used that it is virtually ubiquitous. Sometimes, this technology can be exploited to perform functions that it was never intended to perform, or fail to provide information that it is supposed to protect. X-HIA was shown to be effective at identifying several circuit components in a significantly shorter time than previous identification methods. Instead of requiring a number of input/output pairings that grows factorially or exponentially as the circuit size grows, it requires only …

Improved Multispectral Skin Detection And Its Application To Search Space Reduction For Dismount Detection Based On Histograms Of Oriented Gradients, Adam L. Brooks

Theses and Dissertations

Due to the general shift from conventional warfare to terrorism and urban warfare by enemies of the United States in the late 20th Century, locating and tracking individuals of interest have become critically important. Dismount detection and tracking are vital to provide security and intelligence in both combat and homeland defense scenarios including base defense, combat search and rescue (CSAR), and border patrol. This thesis focuses on exploiting recent advances in skin detection research to reliably detect dismounts in a scene. To this end, a signal-plus-noise model is developed to map modeled skin spectra to the imaging response of an …

Application Of The Three Short Calibration Technique In A Low Frequency Focus Beam System, William E. Gunn Jr. Mar 2010

Application Of The Three Short Calibration Technique In A Low Frequency Focus Beam System, William E. Gunn Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Electromagnetic material characterization is the process of determining the constitutive parameters of matter. In simple media, these parameters are permittivity and permeability. Characterization of these values is often accomplished through the use of waveguides, transmission lines, coaxial cables, and resonant cavities. Free space measurements systems are employed since they are non destructive (i.e., no sample machining is required) and broadband. Traditionally, time domain gating is utilized to mitigate systematic errors. However, an artifact of this calibration technique is band edge corruption due to data windowing. The goal of this research is to develop and apply a Three Short Calibration Technique …

An Approach To Large Scale Radar-Based Modeling And Simulation, Lester C. Long Iv Mar 2010

An Approach To Large Scale Radar-Based Modeling And Simulation, Lester C. Long Iv

Theses and Dissertations

This research presents a method of aggregating, or reducing the resolution, of a commonly available Department of Defense (DoD) simulation. It addresses the differences between varying levels of resolution and scope used in the DoD’s hierarchy of models pyramid. A data representation that aggregates engagement-level simulation data to use at a lower resolution level, the mission-level, is presented and analyzed. Two formats of implementing this data representation are developed and compared: the rigid cylinder format and the expanding tables format. The rigid cylinder format provides an intuitive way to visualize the data and is used to develop the theory. The …

Spectral Domain Rf Fingerprinting For 802.11 Wireless Devices, Sheldon A. Munns Mar 2010

Spectral Domain Rf Fingerprinting For 802.11 Wireless Devices, Sheldon A. Munns

Theses and Dissertations

The increase in availability and reduction in cost of commercial communication devices (e.g. IEEE compliant such as 802.11, WiFi, 802.16, Bluetooth etc.) has increased wireless user exposure and the need for techniques to properly identify/classify signals for increased security measures. Communication device emissions include intentional modulation that enables correct device operation. Hardware and environmental factors alter the ideal response and induce unintentional modulation effects. If these effects (features) are sufficiently unique, it becomes possible to identify a device using its fingerprint, with potential discrimination of not only the manufacturer but possibly the serial number for a given manufacturer. Many techniques …

Modeling Computer Communication Networks In A Realistic 3d Environment, Charles R. Rowell Jr. Mar 2010

Modeling Computer Communication Networks In A Realistic 3d Environment, Charles R. Rowell Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Communication network simulations have typically been visualized in the past through 2D representations, but this is insufficient for battlefield network scenarios. Visual representations of battlefield networks greatly benefit from 3D visualization due to its ability to retain asset location. This research investigates the feasibility of modeling a typical battlefield communication network in a realistic 3D manner and discusses the effects of doing so. The result is an open source, 3D network visualization tool that can create highly intuitive connected battlefield scenes, enabling the user to quickly comprehend network state. It highlights mobile assets, packet movement, and node connectivity while allowing …

Development Of A Methodology For Customizing Insider Threat Auditing On A Linux Operating System, William T. Bai Mar 2010

Development Of A Methodology For Customizing Insider Threat Auditing On A Linux Operating System, William T. Bai

Theses and Dissertations

Insider threats can pose a great risk to organizations and by their very nature are difficult to protect against. Auditing and system logging are capabilities present in most operating systems and can be used for detecting insider activity. However, current auditing methods are typically applied in a haphazard way, if at all, and are not conducive to contributing to an effective insider threat security policy. This research develops a methodology for designing a customized auditing and logging template for a Linux operating system. An intent-based insider threat risk assessment methodology is presented to create use case scenarios tailored to address …

Toward A Mobile Agent Relay Network, Hyon H. Kwak Mar 2010

Toward A Mobile Agent Relay Network, Hyon H. Kwak

Theses and Dissertations

Although wireless communication provides connectivity where hardwired links are difficult or impractical, it is still hindered by the environmental conditions where the communicators reside. Signal loss over large distances or because of intervening obstacles can be mitigated by increasing the user's transmission power or adding repeater nodes between the users. Unfortunately, increasing the signal strength strains limited power resources and increases the likelihood of eavesdropping. Stationary repeaters are impractical for highly mobile users in dangerous environments. While mobile relay nodes might be a preferred solution, a centralized control scheme saps bandwidth from important traffic and introduces a single point of …

Reverberation-Chamber Test Environment For Outdoor Urban Wireless Propagation Studies, Helge Fielitz, Kate A. Remley, Christopher L. Holloway, Qian Zhang, Qiong Wu, David W. Matolak Mar 2010

Reverberation-Chamber Test Environment For Outdoor Urban Wireless Propagation Studies, Helge Fielitz, Kate A. Remley, Christopher L. Holloway, Qian Zhang, Qiong Wu, David W. Matolak

Faculty Publications

We introduce a test environment to replicate the well-known clustering of reflections in power delay profiles arising from late-time delays and reflections. Urban wireless propagation environments are known to exhibit such clustering. The test setup combines discrete reflections generated by a fading simulator with the continuous distribution of reflections created in a reverberation chamber. We describe measurements made in an urban environment in Denver, CO, that illustrate these multiple distributions of reflections. Our comparison of measurements made in the urban environment to those made in the new test environment shows good agreement.

Miniature Ceramic Pifa For Uwb Band Group 3 And 6, David Kearney, Matthias John, Max Ammann Jan 2010

Miniature Ceramic Pifa For Uwb Band Group 3 And 6, David Kearney, Matthias John, Max Ammann

Articles

A ceramic chip planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) is proposed for integration into a mobile handset providing UWB functionality across band groups 3 and 6. The antenna design exhibits a total efficiency of greater than 50% across the entire 6.39 GHz bandwidth while maintaining a very small volume of 57.6 mm^3 . The antenna uses a combination of the normal PIFA resonance and a second resonance due to the ceramic block to achieve a broad ultrawideband (UWB) bandwidth.

Finite Tree-Based Decoding Of Low-Density Parity-Check Codes, Eric T. Psota Jan 2010

Finite Tree-Based Decoding Of Low-Density Parity-Check Codes, Eric T. Psota

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Low-density parity-check codes are commonly decoded using iterative message-passing decoders, such as the min-sum and sum-product decoders. Computer simulations demonstrate that these suboptimal decoders are capable of achieving low probability of bit error at signal-to-noise ratios close to capacity. However, current methods for analyzing the behavior of the min-sum and sum-product decoders fails to produce usable bounds on the probability of bit error. Thus, the resulting probability of bit error when using these decoders remains largely unknown for signal-to-noise ratios beyond the reach of simulation. For this reason, it is worth considering alternative methods for decoding low-density parity-check codes. New …

E-Fraud Prevention Based On The Self-Authentication Of E-Documents, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle Jan 2010

E-Fraud Prevention Based On The Self-Authentication Of E-Documents, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

We consider a method for preventing e-Fraud in which a binary image is encrypted with a floating point cipher using a convolution operation and the output quantized into a 1-bit array generating a binary image ciphertext. The output is then ‘embedded’ in a host image to hide the encrypted information. Embedding is undertaken either in the lowest 1-bit layer or multiple 1-bit layers. Decryption is accomplished by: (i) extracting the binary image from the host image; (ii) correlating the result with the original cipher. In principle, any cipher generator can be used for this purpose and the method has been …

Nonlinear Fiber Lasers Using Bismuth Based Erbium Doper Fiber Amplifier., Sharifeh Shahi

Student Works (2010-2019)

A thorough study on Bismuth-based Erbium-doped fiber (Bi-EDF) is presented for wide-band amplifiers and multi-wavelength fiber laser applications. This fiber allows high Erbium ions concentration to be doped without a significant concentration quenching effect. The high refractive index characteristic in the Bi-EDF has broadened the emission spectrum of Erbium ions to achieve a broader gain spectrum up to extended L-band region compared to normal silica-based Erbium-doped fiber (EDF). The Bi-EDFA performances have been investigated in terms of power conversion efficiency (PCE), quantum conversion efficiency (QCE), gain and noise figure. The highest QCE and PCE for a 215 cm long of …

Harvesting Single Ferroelectric Domain Stressed Nanoparticles For Optical And Ferroic Applications, Gary Cook, J. L. Barnes, S. A. Basun, Dean R. Evans, Ron F. Ziolo, Arturo Ponce, Victor Yu. Reshetnyak, Anatoliy Glushchenko, Partha P. Banerjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We describe techniques to selectively harvest single ferroelectric domain nanoparticles of BaTiO3 as small as 9 nm from a plethora of nanoparticles produced by mechanical grinding. High resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging shows the unidomain atomic structure of the nanoparticles and reveals compressive and tensile surface strains which are attributed to the preservation of ferroelectric behavior in these particles.

We demonstrate the positive benefits of using harvested nanoparticles in disparate liquid crystal systems.

The Influence Of Branches In The Performance Of Power-Line Communication Systems That Use Mc-Coma With Reed Solomon Coding, Emmanuel Felix

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Power-line network is proposed as an infrastructure for Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs)
services provision. However, there are a number of factors that contribute greatly to power-line communication performance degradation. These include number of branches that can be added or removed from the power- line network, lengths of the branch lines, loading etc. It has been pointed out that the number of branches is one of the factors that affects power-line performance to a certain extent. In this paper the influence of number of branches on the performance of Broadband Power-line communication (BPLC) that uses MC- CDMA modulation scheme with …

A Frequency Domain Doubletalk Detector Based On Cross-Correlation And Extension To Multi-Channel Case, Mohammad Asif Iqbal, Steven L. Grant, Jack W. Stokes Dec 2009

A Frequency Domain Doubletalk Detector Based On Cross-Correlation And Extension To Multi-Channel Case, Mohammad Asif Iqbal, Steven L. Grant, Jack W. Stokes

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Most teleconferencing conversations are conducted in the presence of Acoustic echoes. Typically, an adaptive filter is used to cancel the echo, with a control device called the doubletalk detector which controls the adaptation. We derive a novel test statistic for the doubletalk detection based on the cross-correlation between the microphone signal and the cancellation error for the frequency domain adaptive algorithm. the main advantage of the proposed algorithm is its simplicity and computational efficiency. We compare our results with the normalized cross-correlation based doubletalk detector proposed in [2]. We also generalize the idea of the proposed doubletalk detector (single channel) …

Rfid Modeling, Characterization, And Optimization, Joseph A. Cudrnak Dec 2009

Rfid Modeling, Characterization, And Optimization, Joseph A. Cudrnak

Electrical Engineering

Passive RFID tags may be used to transmit a message to a reader. This technology is useful for many applications, including inventory systems. However, due to electromagnetic cancellation on conductive surfaces, the reader cannot detect RFID tags placed directly on conductive objects. Using tag characterization in an RF anechoic chamber and modeling in HFSS, three types of Omni ID tags were characterized and a design was proposed to maximize signal power delivered to the reader.

Meshscan: Performance Of Passive Handoff And Active Handoff, Yin Chen, Karol Kowalik, Mark Davis

Conference papers

A core problem of fast handoff is when handoff should perform and which Mesh Node (MN) should associated with. We have developed a fast handoff management scheme called MeshScan to provide a novel use of channel scanning latency, by employing open system authentication in both Passive Handoff and Active Handoff. This scheme comprises three steps: firstly a client device takes advantage of the Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) architecture to maintain a list of active MNs. Secondly MeshScan Handoff Sensor performs handoff when it receives a disassociation management frame from the serving MN or when the measured signal strength from the …

This scheme comprises two steps: firstly a client device takes advantage of the WMN architecture to maintain a list of active mesh nodes. Secondly when handoff is required, a client transmits Authentication Request frames to all mesh nodes (MNs) from the list instead of broadcasting Probe Request …

A Study On The Effect Of Random Placement And Orientation On The Resonance Of Multiple Split Ring Resonators, Michael Buscher Sep 2009

A Study On The Effect Of Random Placement And Orientation On The Resonance Of Multiple Split Ring Resonators, Michael Buscher

Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis project experimentally studies the effect of placing split-ring oscillators (SRR) in a non-periodic arrangment with random orientation. This is contrary to typical structures which are simulated as a single unit cell with a periodic boundry condition to emulate an infinite array of SSR's. Samples are measured using a near-field free-space measurement system with full Thru, Reflect, Line (TRL) calibration and the application of time domain gating. Results, in the form of scattering (S) parameters, are compared with previous measurments of periodic SRR structures in order to study the influence, if any, of periodicity in the frequency response of …

Influence Of Solar Heating On The Performance Of Integrated Solar Cell Microstrip Patch Antennas, Maria Roo Ons, S. Shynu, M Seredynski, Max Ammann, Sarah Mccormack, Brian Norton

Articles

The integration of microstrip patch antennas with photovoltaics has been proposed for applications in autonomous wireless communication systems located on building façades. Full integration was achieved using polycrystalline silicon solar cells as both antenna ground plane and direct current power generation in the same device. An overview of the proposed photovoltaic antenna designs is provided and the variation characterised of the electromagnetic properties of the device with temperature and solar radiation. Measurements for both copper and solar antennas are reported on three different commercial laminates with contrasting values for thermal coefficient of the dielectric constant.

Directional Dual-Band Slot Antenna With Dual-Bandgap High-Impedance-Surface Reflector, Xiulong Bao, Giuseppe Ruvio, Max Ammann Sep 2009

Directional Dual-Band Slot Antenna With Dual-Bandgap High-Impedance-Surface Reflector, Xiulong Bao, Giuseppe Ruvio, Max Ammann

Articles

A compact dual-band high-impedance-surface EBG structure is employed as a reflector for a dual-band annular-slot antenna. The reflector comprises an array of miniaturized EBG cells which utilizes square patches augmented by four S-shaped corrugated arms to reduce the resonant frequency of the proposed EBG structure. In order to broaden the bandwidth and adjust the frequency ratio for the dual-band EBG structure, a log-periodic spacing between the S-shaped strips is introduced. The combination of microstrip-fed annular slot and EBG reflector provides directional properties for both frequency bands with reduced size and low-profile.
