Enhancing The Bandwidth And Radiation Characteristics Of Size-Reduced Antennas, Jack P. Nemec
Enhancing The Bandwidth And Radiation Characteristics Of Size-Reduced Antennas, Jack P. Nemec
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Electrically small antennas are researched heavily throughout electromagnetic literature due to their practicality. Antennas need to be able to fit into small places such as cell phones. However, the reduction of antenna size comes at a cost in decreasing the impedance bandwidth and radiation efficiency of the antenna. This research aims to find solutions to having sized-reduced antennas while enhancing both the impedance bandwidth and radiation characteristics of the antenna. First, the size reduction of a dual-element dipole is analyzed. Dual-element dipoles are known to have impedance bandwidth enhancing properties along with the ability to have different radiation modes. Next, …

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This study compares the electrical performance and economics of DC-coupled and AC-coupled community microgrid configurations through simulation and financial modeling of the Redwood Coast Airport Microgrid (RCAM), which integrates 2.2 MW of solar PV and 2.2 MW of battery storage. Unified load flow, short circuit, transient stability (including load impact), and efficiency studies using ETAP & SAM software tools demonstrate that the DC-coupled configuration is preferred based on efficiency, while both configurations exhibit equivalent performance with respect to selected power quality metrics. The DC setup exhibits 11% higher overall efficiency than AC coupling in converting solar energy to grid exports. …
Parameter Identifiability Analysis And Calibration For Power System Dynamic Models, Lei Wang
Parameter Identifiability Analysis And Calibration For Power System Dynamic Models, Lei Wang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Accurate dynamic models are crucial for stable and reliable power system operation, making their validation essential. The accuracy of parameter estimation is influenced by several factors, including available observables, model structure, and estimation methods. However, in dynamic models, estimating parameters can be difficult when some of them are unidentifiable, meaning their values cannot be uniquely determined from the available data. This challenge may stem from limited impact of parameters on the measured outputs, parameter interactions, or poor data quality. Therefore, an identifiability analysis should be conducted prior to parameter estimation or model calibration. This preliminary step helps to determine which …

Open-Ended Hollow Coaxial Cable Resonance Sensing Via Permittivity Fluctuations For Applications To Exhaled Breath Health Monitoring, Peter Henry Holtmann
Masters Theses
"We report a pre-diagnostics breath analyzer based on the open-ended hollow coaxial cable resonator (OE-HCCR) to achieve real-time differentiation of healthy and compromised lung function through electromagnetic analysis of exhaled breath matter. A two-phase amplification scheme of electromagnetic signatures metered via the S11 phase curve offers high sensitivity to permittivity fluctuations in exposed airflow. The mathematical model of the breath analyzer is explained, followed by experimental validation of numerical findings from previous work. The collection of breath transient signals is performed through monitoring the reflected power magnitude and phase of the scattering parameter (S11) at the resonance frequency. Material fluctuations …

Control And Optimization Of Energy Storage System In Power Distribution System, Waqas Ur Rehman
Doctoral Dissertations
"The widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and transportation electrification is encumbered by two chief barriers: i) the limited driving range of EVs in the market today and ii) inadequate fast-charging infrastructure for long-distance trips. Extreme fast charging (XFC) technology can recharge EVs in less than 10 minutes for 200 miles range. Firstly, a novel robust optimization-based mixed integer linear programming model is proposed to size a battery energy storage system (BESS) and PV system in an XFCS. In this part, it is assumed that the sizing and location of the XFCS are known. Secondly, the aforesaid assumption is relaxed, …

Application Of The Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming Technique For The Economic Planning Of Transmission Networks In New Manner, Nader Shawky Abdelhakeem, Maged Gamal Lotfy, Mohamed Shibl Albags, Ahmed Saied Elzawawy
Mansoura Engineering Journal
In the recent years, the mathematical planning model of transmission networks based on full AC load flow has been developed. But, due to the model non-convexity and the existing of large number of local solutions, this model can only be used for small size networks as it consumes large unreasonable computation time in addition to its incapability to yield global solution in most cases. To overcome these problems, two new iterative solution procedures have been presented in this paper. In the first one, the objective function is changed to the minimization of the number of new lines required to satisfy …

Spatiotemporal Variance Image Reconstruction For Thermographic Inspections, Logan M. Wilcox, Emily M. Johnson, Emma T. Bohannon, Catherine E. Johnson, Kristen M. Donnell
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Active microwave thermography (AMT) is a nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E) technique that utilizes a radiating antenna to induce a thermal increase on or within a specimen under test (SUT). The radiated power density is spatially nonuniform and therefore results in a spatially nonuniform thermal excitation, which may result in missed or false indications of defects. To this end, this work proposes a novel image reconstruction technique for nonuniform excitation/heating and is referred to as Spatiotemporal Variance Reconstruction (STVR). STVR utilizes the spatial and temporal variance of the surface thermal profile. STVR is advantageous in that it does not require …

H-Nobs: Achieving Certified Fairness And Robustness In Distributed Learning On Heterogeneous Datasets, Guanqiang Zhou, Ping Xu, Yue Wang, Zhi Tian
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Fairness and robustness are two important goals in the design of modern distributed learning systems. Despite a few prior works attempting to achieve both fairness and robustness, some key aspects of this direction remain underexplored. In this paper, we try to answer three largely unnoticed and unaddressed questions that are of paramount significance to this topic: (i) What makes jointly satisfying fairness and robustness difficult? (ii) Is it possible to establish theoretical guarantee for the dual property of fairness and robustness? (iii) How much does fairness have to sacrifice at the expense of robustness being incorporated into the system? To …

Approximating Discrimination Within Models When Faced With Several Non-Binary Sensitive Attributes, Yijun Bian, Yujie Luo, Ping Xu
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Discrimination mitigation with machine learning (ML) models could be complicated because multiple factors may interweave with each other including hierarchically and historically. Yet few existing fairness measures are able to capture the discrimination level within ML models in the face of multiple sensitive attributes. To bridge this gap, we propose a fairness measure based on distances between sets from a manifold perspective, named as ‘harmonic fairness measure via manifolds (HFM)’ with two optional versions, which can deal with a fine-grained discrimination evaluation for several sensitive attributes of multiple values. To accelerate the computation of distances of sets, we further propose …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper the impact of aging on the level of passive intermodulation (PIM) and DC resistance of fabric-over-foam metallic contacts is presented. These contacts are widely used to maintain metallic connections between modules and chassis in electronic devices. The PIM caused by the loose metallic contact of these materials mainly affects a receiver's RF sensitivity in mobile devices. This aging test under elevated temperature and relative humidity conditions offers an experiment-based approach with respect to various metallic contact cases. Energy dispersive spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy are used to characterize the change in material composition and the contact surface …
Real-Time Occupancy-Based Control Of Hvac Systems In Office Buildings Considering Energy Saving And Thermal Comfort, Emmanuel Agabi
Real-Time Occupancy-Based Control Of Hvac Systems In Office Buildings Considering Energy Saving And Thermal Comfort, Emmanuel Agabi
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Traditional heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) control systems often waste energy and fail to maintain thermal comfort due to their reliance on static setpoints, manual on/off control, and limited responsiveness to occupancy and weather conditions. With advancements in the Internet of Things (IoT), integrating occupancy data into building energy management systems, including HVAC systems, has progressed beyond conventional sensor-based approaches. This thesis addresses the inefficiency of traditional control of HVAC systems by proposing two strategies for a single-zone office building. The first one is occupancy-based control (OBC), and the second is data-driven supervisory model predictive control (SMPC). By leveraging …

Enhancing Energy Efficiency In Kubernetes Cluster Through Energy-Aware Resource Scheduling By Node Labeling Assignment, Soundharya Moorthi
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
As the demand for cloud-native infrastructure grows, managing energy becomes increasingly essential for small-scale and large-scale Kubernetes clusters. This research introduces two scheduling strategies to enhance energy usage in Kubernetes clusters: the energy-aware resource scheduler and the adaptive energy-aware resource scheduler. Both approaches aim to reduce energy consumption by dynamically managing node states and workload assignments based on resource utilization. Both schedulers are implemented as extenders on top of the default Kubernetes scheduler. A comparative evaluation against the default Kubernetes scheduler and the bin packing scheduler, using power and energy utilization metrics, demonstrates that while the energy-aware scheduler achieves notable …
Contextual Matching And Aggregation Network For Mri Image Super-Resolution, Abdulhamid Muhammad
Contextual Matching And Aggregation Network For Mri Image Super-Resolution, Abdulhamid Muhammad
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
High-resolution (HR) Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) provides detailed visualization of healthy and pathological tissues, making it a vital tool for accurate diagnosis, and enhancing physicians’ ability to detect lesions with better precision. However, obtaining HR MRI images in practice is often challenging due to hardware limitations, extended scan durations, and patient discomfort. Super-resolution (SR) techniques have been developed to recover HR image from LR image. However, capturing and integrating local and global features remains a significant challenge, as many approaches inadequately model the complex contextual correlations across multiple scales thereby degrading reconstruction quality. To address these limitations, we propose an …

A High-Gain Wideband Antenna Employing Novel Partial Reflective Surfaces, Mia Maria Ulfah
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In this dissertation, different partially reflective surfaces (PRS) are investigated to improve the gain and bandwidth of a Fabry–Perot cavity (FPC) antenna for wireless local-area network (WLAN) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication applications. Each of the proposed PRSs has the phase of a reflection coefficient that increases with frequency. This property of the PRS is required for a broadband characteristic of the FPC antenna, which is desirable for the intended applications. A U-shaped microstrip patch antenna (MPA) with a parasitic rectangular patch is used as a feed antenna. It is designed for operation in the WLAN and V2V frequency bands. The …

An Attention-Guided Image Super-Resolution For Scene Text, Tithnorakneath Em
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Scene Text Image Super-Resolution (STISR) is crucial in enhancing text recognition for low-resolution images, often degraded due to environmental and device limitations. While many existing STISR approaches leverage super-resolution techniques to refine image quality, they frequently need specialized mechanisms to extract text-specific features. Most existing methods were based on feature extraction methods that missed critical details, such as edges and text-background contrasts, that are usually important for recognition. In this work, we propose a new feature extraction method that uses Channel Attention and Spatial Attention mechanisms to emphasize features related to text, namely edges, contours, and spatial alignment. We add …

Optimal Centralized Operations Of Local Energy Market Considering Electric Vehicle Charging Activity For Local Grid Services, Arnon Teawnarong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This dissertation investigates the optimal operation of local energy markets (LEM) within Thailand’s low-voltage distribution system (LVDS) to integrate renewable energy sources and electric vehicles (EVs). Despite extensive research, uncertainties persist in selecting optimal transaction partners and negotiating prices to maximize social welfare. Additionally, LEM operations should consider self-managing energy consumption and utilizing EVs to mitigate distribution network constraint (DNC) violations and leverage local resources to alleviate power imbalances during real-time electricity delivery. Local grid service programs, which offer incentives, face challenges in ensuring equitable participation and allocating fair incentives. SAC305 (96.5 wt% Sn, 3 wt% Ag, 0.5 wt%Cu) solder is increasingly becoming popular due to its reliability good characteristics and performance in addition to the environmental concerns and regulations that restrict the use of lead in nano/microelectronic products. In nano/microelectronics, manufacturing smooth solder coatings free of defects such as voids and cracks, which can compromise joint reliability is crucial. Magnetron sputtering offers a high degree of control over film thickness and composition, resulting in films with excellent uniformity and adhesion. Despite these advantages, fabricating continuous and robust SAC305 films using magnetron sputtering remains a difficult task with limited research …

Piezoelectric ultrasonic motors (USMs) are actuators that use ultrasonic frequency piezoelectric vibration-generated waves to transform electrical energy into rotary or translating motion. USMs receive more attention because they offer distinct qualities over traditional magnet-coil-based motors, such as miniaturization, great accuracy, speed, non-magnetic nature, silent operation, straightforward construction, broad temperature operations, and adaptability. This review study focuses on the principle of USMs and their classifications, characterization, fabrication methods, applications, and future challenges. Firstly, the classifications of USMs, especially, standing-wave, traveling-wave, hybrid-mode, and multi-degree-of-freedom USMs, are summarized, and their respective functioning principles are explained. Secondly, finite element modeling analysis for design and …
