Sharing Stress With A Robot: What Would A Robot Say?, Honson Y. Ling, Elin A. Björling
Human-Machine Communication
With the prevalence of mental health problems today, designing human-robot interaction for mental health intervention is not only possible, but critical. The current experiment examined how three types of robot disclosure (emotional, technical, and by-proxy) affect robot perception and human disclosure behavior during a stress-sharing activity. Emotional robot disclosure resulted in the lowest robot perceived safety. Post-hoc analysis revealed that increased perceived stress predicted reduced human disclosure, user satisfaction, robot likability, and future robot use. Negative attitudes toward robots also predicted reduced intention for future robot use. This work informs on the possible design of robot disclosure, as well as …
The Robot Privacy Paradox: Understanding How Privacy Concerns Shape Intentions To Use Social Robots, Christoph Lutz, Aurelia Tamò-Larrieux
The Robot Privacy Paradox: Understanding How Privacy Concerns Shape Intentions To Use Social Robots, Christoph Lutz, Aurelia Tamò-Larrieux
Human-Machine Communication
Conceptual research on robots and privacy has increased but we lack empirical evidence about the prevalence, antecedents, and outcomes of different privacy concerns about social robots. To fill this gap, we present a survey, testing a variety of antecedents from trust, technology adoption, and robotics scholarship. Respondents are most concerned about data protection on the manufacturer side, followed by social privacy concerns and physical concerns. Using structural equation modeling, we find a privacy paradox, where the perceived benefits of social robots override privacy concerns.
Building A Stronger Casa: Extending The Computers Are Social Actors Paradigm, Andrew Gambino, Jesse Fox, Rabindra A. Ratan
Building A Stronger Casa: Extending The Computers Are Social Actors Paradigm, Andrew Gambino, Jesse Fox, Rabindra A. Ratan
Human-Machine Communication
The computers are social actors framework (CASA), derived from the media equation, explains how people communicate with media and machines demonstrating social potential. Many studies have challenged CASA, yet it has not been revised. We argue that CASA needs to be expanded because people have changed, technologies have changed, and the way people interact with technologies has changed. We discuss the implications of these changes and propose an extension of CASA. Whereas CASA suggests humans mindlessly apply human-human social scripts to interactions with media agents, we argue that humans may develop and apply human-media social scripts to these interactions. Our …
Me And My Robot Smiled At One Another: The Process Of Socially Enacted Communicative Affordance In Human-Machine Communication, Carmina Rodríguez-Hidalgo
Me And My Robot Smiled At One Another: The Process Of Socially Enacted Communicative Affordance In Human-Machine Communication, Carmina Rodríguez-Hidalgo
Human-Machine Communication
The term affordance has been inconsistently applied both in robotics and communication. While the robotics perspective is mostly object-based, the communication science view is commonly user-based. In an attempt to bring the two perspectives together, this theoretical paper argues that social robots present new social communicative affordances emerging from a two-way relational process. I first explicate conceptual approaches of affordance in robotics and communication. Second, a model of enacted communicative affordance in the context of Human-Machine Communication (HMC) is presented. Third and last, I explain how a pivotal social robot characteristic—embodiment—plays a key role in the process of social communicative …
Ontological Boundaries Between Humans And Computers And The Implications For Human-Machine Communication, Andrea L. Guzman
Ontological Boundaries Between Humans And Computers And The Implications For Human-Machine Communication, Andrea L. Guzman
Human-Machine Communication
In human-machine communication, people interact with a communication partner that is of a different ontological nature from themselves. This study examines how people conceptualize ontological differences between humans and computers and the implications of these differences for human-machine communication. Findings based on data from qualitative interviews with 73 U.S. adults regarding disembodied artificial intelligence (AI) technologies (voice-based AI assistants, automated-writing software) show that people differentiate between humans and computers based on origin of being, degree of autonomy, status as tool/tool-user, level of intelligence, emotional capabilities, and inherent flaws. In addition, these ontological boundaries are becoming increasingly blurred as technologies emulate …

Toward An Agent-Agnostic Transmission Model: Synthesizing Anthropocentric And Technocentric Paradigms In Communication, Jaime Banks, Maartje M. A. De Graaf
Human-Machine Communication
Technological and social evolutions have prompted operational, phenomenological, and ontological shifts in communication processes. These shifts, we argue, trigger the need to regard human and machine roles in communication processes in a more egalitarian fashion. Integrating anthropocentric and technocentric perspectives on communication, we propose an agent-agnostic framework for human-machine communication. This framework rejects exclusive assignment of communicative roles (sender, message, channel, receiver) to traditionally held agents and instead focuses on evaluating agents according to their functions as a means for considering what roles are held in communication processes. As a first step in advancing this agent-agnostic perspective, this theoretical paper …
A Monte Carlo Approach To Closing The Reality Gap, Damian Lyons, James Finocchiaro, Michael Novitzky, Christopher Korpela
A Monte Carlo Approach To Closing The Reality Gap, Damian Lyons, James Finocchiaro, Michael Novitzky, Christopher Korpela
Faculty Publications
We propose a novel approach to the ’reality gap’ problem, i.e., modifying a robot simulation so that its performance becomes more similar to observed real world phenomena. This problem arises whether the simulation is being used by human designers or in an automated policy development mechanism. We expect that the program/policy is developed using simulation, and subsequently deployed on a real system. We further assume that the program includes a monitor procedure with scalar output to determine when it is achieving its performance objectives. The proposed approach collects simulation and real world observations and builds conditional probability functions. These are …
Channel Scanning And Access Point Selection Mechanisms For 802.11 Handoff: A Survey, Dhananjay Singh
Channel Scanning And Access Point Selection Mechanisms For 802.11 Handoff: A Survey, Dhananjay Singh
Computer Science and Engineering Master's Theses
While the cellular technology has been evolving continuously in recent years and client handoffs remain unnoticed, the 802.11 networks still impose an enormous latency issue once the client device decides to roam between the Access Point (AP). This latency is caused by many factors reckoning on scanning the channels and searching for APs with better signal strength. Once data from all the nearby APs has been collected, the client picks the most suitable AP and tries to connect with it. The AP verifies if it has enough capability to serve the client. It also ensures that the client has the …

This paper presents the design and validation of a lightweight Magneto-Rheological (MR) clutch, called Hybrid Magneto-Rheological (HMR) clutch. The clutch utilizes a hybrid magnetization using an electromagnetic coil and a permanent magnet. The electromagnetic coil can adjust the magnetic field
generated by the permanent magnet to a desired value, and fully control the transmitted torque. To achieve the maximum torque to mass ratio, the design of HMR clutch is formulated as a multiobjective optimization problem with three design objectives, namely the transmitted torque, the mass of the clutch, and the
magnetic field strength within the clutch …

The proliferation of mobile devices that support the acceleration of data services (especially smartphones) has resulted in a dramatic increase in mobile traffic. Mobile data also increased exponentially, already exceeding the throughput of the backhaul. To improve spectrum utilization and increase mobile network traffic, in combination with content caching, we study the cooperation between primary and secondary networks via content caching. We consider that the secondary base station assists the primary user by pre-caching some popular primary contents. Thus, the secondary base station can obtain more licensed bandwidth to serve its own user. We mainly focus on the time delay …

A Hybrid Agent-Based And Equation Based Epidemiological Model For The Spread Of Infectious Diseases, Elizabeth Hunter
Doctoral
Infectious disease models are essential in understanding how an outbreak might occur and how best to mitigate an outbreak. One of the most important factors in modelling a disease is choosing an appropriate model and determining the assump tions needed to create the model. The main research questions this thesis addresses are how do we create a model for the spread of infectious diseases that captures heterogeneous agents without using an inordinate amount of computing power and how can we use that model to plan for future infectious disease outbreaks. We start our work by analysing and comparing equation based …

Short-Term Electricity Price Forecasting In Deregulated Electricity Market Based On Enhanced Artificial Intelligence Techniques, Pourdaryaei Alireza
Short-Term Electricity Price Forecasting In Deregulated Electricity Market Based On Enhanced Artificial Intelligence Techniques, Pourdaryaei Alireza
Student Works (2020-2029)
Electricity price forecasting is considered as one of prime factors for operation, planning and scheduling of price-setter market participants. However, possessing time variant, non-linear and non-stationary behaviors make the electricity price a complex signal. The main challenge in this area is providing highly accurate and efficient day-ahead price forecasting. A suitable feature selection technique, which is able to model the interacting features and nonlinearities of the forecast processes, is still required although researches have been performed for day-ahead forecasting. In this research, a hybrid electricity price forecasting methodology is proposed using two-stage feature selection method and optimization using adaptive neuro-fuzzy …

Abstract: Because the traditional methods can hardly analyze the complex combustion characteristics of cement kiln mixed with domestic refuse, a data mining technology is introduced. A domestic cement plant is selected as the object, and its operating data and relevant parameters are collected. The influence coefficient of each parameter on coal consumption and NOx emission is analyzed by using Stability Selection algorithm. The mathematical model of coal consumption and NOx emission is established with Random Forest algorithm, and the key optimization parameters and their optimal values are obtained by K-means clustering algorithm. The result shows that this method …

An Enhanced Multi-Modal Function Optimization Fireworks Algorithm Base On Loser-Out Tournament, Xiaoning Shen, Wang Qian, Huang Yao, You Xuan
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: An enhanced multi-modal fireworks algorithm based on the loser-out tournament is proposed. A new position-based mapping rule is used to map the explosion sparks beyond the upper boundary of the explosion space to the area near the upper boundary, and to map the one below the lower boundary to the area near the lower boundary. A strategy which adaptively adjusts the number of explosion sparks is introduced to better balance the global and local search abilities of the algorithm. The 28 functions in the CEC2013 standard test function set are selected to the test. Experimental results show that the …

A Xor-Based Visual Cryptography Scheme For (2, N) Access Structure With Ideal Structure Division, Yuqiao Cheng, Zhengxin Fu, Bin Yu
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: We propose a XOR-based visual cryptography scheme for (2, n) access structures. According to the definition of ideal access structure, the relationship of shares among the minimal qualified subsets is analyzed. And based on it, a division algorithm of access structures is presented with the theory of graph. By this approach, we can obtain the least number of ideal access structures. Additionally the processes of secret sharing and recovering are given. Experimental results show that this scheme can achieve a perfect secret recovery. Compared with existing schemes, the pixel expansion of our paper is the best.

Study On Hardware-In-Loop Simulation Of Space-Feed Low-Frequency Guidance With Turntable External, Linpeng Wang, Chaolei Wang, Yuting Dai
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Low-frequency detection, tracking and guidance of stealthy targets need new requirements for hardware-in-loop simulation verification technology. Turntable built-in usually produces electromagnetic interference to seeker. A turntable external method for space- feed low-frequency guidance of hardware in- loop simulation system is proposed. The space-feed low-frequency guidance simulation model is established, and the influence of turntable electromagnetic interference on the seeker is completely eliminated by the turntable external. The simulation environment of non-inertial space motion is constructed to solve the information fusion problem of multiple spaces for hardware-in-loop simulation. The feasibility of the simulation method is verified. The results show that …
