Computer Graphics: Conversion Of Contour Line Definitions Into Polygonal Element Mosaics, Thomas W. Sederberg Dec 1977

Computer Graphics: Conversion Of Contour Line Definitions Into Polygonal Element Mosaics, Thomas W. Sederberg

Theses and Dissertations

There has been a disparity between the conventional method of describing topographic surfaces (i.e. contour line definition) and a format of surface description often used in continuous-line computer graphics (i.e. panel definition). The two differ enough that conversion from contours to panels is not a trivial problem. A computer program that performs such a conversion would greatly facilitate continuous tone display of topographical surfaces, or any other surface which is defined by contour lines.

This problem has been addressed by Keppel and alluded to by Fuchs. Keppel's is a highly systematic approach in which he uses graph theory to find …

Programming Language Requirements For Human Communication Structures Or Computer Conferencing, Computerized Conferencing & Communications Center, Peter Gordon Anderson

Computerized Conferencing and Communications Center Reports

Our overall goal is to be able, simply and quickly, to construct computer conferencing systems for new requirements, applications, and even experimental ideas or fantasies. One way to view this requirement is as the creation of a highly parameterized conferencing system itself. Our view, however, is that of a programming language; i.e., an integrated notational system for the specification of communication structures and the associated actions or computation to be taken by the computer system hosting the structure.

A communication structure consists of a group of people (and storage devices) each endowed with some characteristics, and some means of person-to-person …

Electronic Color Scanners, Kenneth Francis Hird Jun 1974

Electronic Color Scanners, Kenneth Francis Hird

Graduate Research Papers

Process color photography has been continually developing for many years. In fact, color printing techniques are still benefiting, through additional sophisticated requirements, and from a discovery made about 300 years ago. At that time Sir Isaac Newton, British scientist, mathematician • and philosopher, placed a glass prism in the path of a narrow beam of sunlight entering his room through a pinhole in an opaque window shade. He determined that ordinary white light is a mixture of colored lights.

Unfortunately, in practice, ideal pigments for three-color inks do not exist and this impasse greatly complicates the job for the photo-processor. …

The Theoretical Distribution Of Forces In The Rigid Component Of The Buccal Arch Positioner, Dennis H. Teruya

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The distribution of an applied force to the rigid component of the Buccal Arch Positioner was determined with a theoretically formulated model. The rigid component was assumed to be a free body without the semi-rigid attachments and was evaluated at four points for the force distribution. The summation of the forces and the moments were equated to zero and were utilized to derive equations to solve for the unknown forces. The unknown forces at each point of the rigid component were solved for in terms of the given force applications.

A laterally directed force application at one of the posterior …

Thus it provides not merely for reporting up the chain of command, but also for dissemination of policy guidance and reference material down the chain, and for lateral communication among all users. It places a premium upon flexibility, to permit rapid system modifications in response to changes in user functions and needs and it offers a greatly simplified operation, to avoid any necessity for …

Development Of A Sixteen Line Multiplexer, James H. Stangel Jan 1973

Development Of A Sixteen Line Multiplexer, James H. Stangel

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report explains the development of a telephone line multiplexer to be used with a computer based personal paging system. The large geographical area coverage made possible by computer processing results in many calls having to cross telephone tariff boundaries. Since system users cannot be expected to pay long distance charges, dedicated lines which cross tariff boundaries must be leased. Multiplexing applied to those leased lines reduces the cost of data transmission, and is, therefore, justified. The design of the multiplexer proceeds from a specification set which is derived from user response requirements. Fundamentally, the response consists in advising the …

In two of the methods, the discussants need not even be participating simultaneously. …

Entropy Reduction Of English Text Using Variable Length Grouping, Vincent Norman Ast Jr. Jul 1972

Entropy Reduction Of English Text Using Variable Length Grouping, Vincent Norman Ast Jr.

Dissertations and Theses

It is known that the entropy of English text can be reduced by arranging the text into groups of two or more letters each. The higher the order of the grouping the greater is the entropy reduction. Using this principle in a computer text compressing system brings about difficulties, however, because the number of entries required in the translation table increases exponentially with group size. This experiment examined the possibility of using a translation table containing only selected entries of all group sizes with the expectation of obtaining a substantial entropy reduction with a relatively small table.

An expression was …

Moment-Curvature-Thrust Relationships In Hybrid Members, Douglas Wrenn Fiala Jul 1972

Moment-Curvature-Thrust Relationships In Hybrid Members, Douglas Wrenn Fiala

Dissertations and Theses

In order to overcome the difficulties encountered in closed form solutions, moment-curvature-thrust relationships are developed for hybrid and nonhybrid cross sections utilizing an open form method. The use of horizontal sectors permits the inclusion of residual stresses and/or nonbilinear stress-strain relationships, if desired. Theoretical and experimental data are compared. Applications to circular tubes and other cross sections are discussed. Results indicate that open form solutions are feasible for calculating moment-curvature-thrust data. Hybrid cross sections are easily treated by open form solutions.
