The Performance Analysis Of A Unicast Network When Two Protocols, Sctp (Stream Control Transmission Protocol) And Tcp (Transmission Control Protocol) Coexist In The Network, Bagio Budiardjo, Michael Thiotrisno Aug 2003

The Performance Analysis Of A Unicast Network When Two Protocols, Sctp (Stream Control Transmission Protocol) And Tcp (Transmission Control Protocol) Coexist In The Network, Bagio Budiardjo, Michael Thiotrisno

Makara Journal of Technology

This paper elaborates the performance analysis of a unicast network when two protocols, SCTP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol) and TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) coexist in the network. These two protocols are tested using File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and Constant Bit Rate (CBR) based traffic. From the simulations, it could be concluded that SCTP could achieve better throughput compared to TCP in both FTP and CBR based traffic, with sufficiently high fairness index of both intrafairness and interfairness. The increase of simulation time yields to the increase and relatively stable network performance. The increase of the number of sessions of small …

Revisiting The Fresnel Coefficients For Uniform Plane Wave Propagation Across A Nonchiral, Reciprocal And Chiral, Nonreciprocal Interface, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Sumit Nema

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The problem of EM wave propagation in non-reciprocal chiral media has been studied by several investigators. In a recent approach, a dual-transform technique has been developed to study the problem of such propagation under paraxial and slow-envelope variation conditions.

In this paper, we first outline some of the results obtained using the dual transform technique for arbitrary boundary conditions within the left boundary of a semi-infinite, non-reciprocal chiral medium for a uniform plane wave, and a fundamental Gaussian-profiled beam. Next, we explore the problem of a uniform EM wave incident at an oblique angle at an interface between a reciprocal, …

Adaptive Live Video Streaming By Priority Drop, Jie Huang, Charles Krasic, Jonathan Walpole Jul 2003

Adaptive Live Video Streaming By Priority Drop, Jie Huang, Charles Krasic, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper we explore the use of Priority-progress streaming (PPS) for video surveillance applications. PPS is an adaptive streaming technique for the delivery of continuous media over variable bit-rate channels. It is based on the simple idea of reordering media components within a time window into priority order before transmission. The main concern when using PPS for live video streaming is the time delay introduced by reordering. In this paper we describe how PPS can be extended to support live streaming and show that the delay inherent in the approach can be tuned to satisfy a wide range of …

Computational Complexity And Feasibility Of Data Processing And Interval Computations, With Extension To Cases When We Have Partial Information About Probabilities, Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre Jul 2003

Computational Complexity And Feasibility Of Data Processing And Interval Computations, With Extension To Cases When We Have Partial Information About Probabilities, Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many real-life situations, we are interested in the value of a physical quantity y that is difficult or impossible to measure directly. To estimate y, we find some easier-to-measure quantities x1,...,xn which are related to y by a known relation y=f(x1,...,xn). Measurements are never 100% accurate; hence, the measured values Xi are different from xi, and the resulting estimate Y=f(X1,...,Xn) is different from the desired value y=f(x1,...,xn). How different?

Traditional engineering to error estimation in data processing assumes that we know the probabilities of different measurement error dxi=Xi-xi. …

Eliminating Duplicates Under Interval And Fuzzy Uncertainty: An Asymptotically Optimal Algorithm And Its Geospatial Applications, Roberto Torres, George R. Keller, Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Geospatial databases generally consist of measurements related to points (or pixels in the case of raster data), lines, and polygons. In recent years, the size and complexity of these databases have increased significantly and they often contain duplicate records, i.e., two or more close records representing the same measurement result. In this paper, we address the problem of detecting duplicates in a database consisting of point measurements. As a test case, we use a database of measurements of anomalies in the Earth's gravity field that we have compiled. In this paper, we show that a natural duplicate deletion algorithm requires …

Diagnostics Of Eccentricities And Bar/End-Ring Connector Breakages In Polyphase Induction Motors Through A Combination Of Time-Series Data Mining And Time-Stepping Coupled Fe-State Space Techniques, John F. Bangura, Richard J. Povinelli, Nabeel Demerdash, Ronald H. Brown

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This paper develops the foundations of a technique for detection and categorization of dynamic/static eccentricities and bar/end-ring connector breakages in squirrel-cage induction motors that is not based on the traditional Fourier transform frequency-domain spectral analysis concepts. Hence, this approach can distinguish between the "fault signatures" of each of the following faults: eccentricities, broken bars, and broken end-ring connectors in such induction motors. Furthermore, the techniques presented here can extensively and economically predict and characterize faults from the induction machine adjustable-speed drive design data without the need to have had actual fault data from field experience. This is done through the …

A Generative Programming Framework For Adaptive Middleware, Venkita Subramonian, Christopher Gill Jun 2003

A Generative Programming Framework For Adaptive Middleware, Venkita Subramonian, Christopher Gill

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Historically, many distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems were developed manually from scratch, leading to stove-piped solutions that while correct in both functional and QoS properties were very expensive to develop and difficult to maintain and extend. First-generation middleware technologies such as CORBA 2.x [1], XML [2], and SOAP [3], served to shield application developers from low-level platform details, thus raising the level of abstraction at which distributed systems are developed and supporting reuse of infrastructure to amortize development costs over the lifetime of a system. However, interdependencies between services and object interfaces resulting from these programming models significantly limited …

An Investigation Into Non-Verbal Sound-Based Modes Of Human-To-Computer Communication With Rehabilitation Applications, Ted Burke

Conference Papers

During the course of our work in the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Ireland we have encountered patients who, while unable to speak, are capable of making reproducible utterances. We present techniques used to harness such utterances, in addition to whistling, as a means of communication and control. A simple technique for identifying the phonemes /o/ and /s/ (in single-symbol ARPAbet notation) is presented with applications. The use of pitch variation as a means of controlling a continuously variable parameter is described with two applications - a microcontroller based light dimmer switch and a computer program which facilitates mouse pointer control. …

Determination Of Properties Of Composite Materials From The Lamb Wave Propagation: Probabilistic, Interval, And Fuzzy Approaches, Fariba Ansari, William Durrer, Soheil Nazarian, Vladik Kreinovich Jun 2003

Determination Of Properties Of Composite Materials From The Lamb Wave Propagation: Probabilistic, Interval, And Fuzzy Approaches, Fariba Ansari, William Durrer, Soheil Nazarian, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the most efficient non-destructive techniques for finding hidden faults in a plate is the use of ultrasonic Lamb waves. These waves are reflected by faults, and from this reflection, we can locate the faults. For that, we need to know how the Lamb waves propagate. Their propagation is determined by the dynamic elastic constants C_pq, so we must find these constants. These constants cannot be measured directly; instead, we measure the dependence of the speed of frequency c(f), and we must reconstruct C_pq from the measured values of c(f). In this paper, we show how this can be …

On-Line Signature Verification Using Global Features, Akrum Mamdouh Shawky Jun 2003

On-Line Signature Verification Using Global Features, Akrum Mamdouh Shawky

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The work presented in this thesis deals with the development of an on-line Handwritten Signature Verification methodology based on certain Global features that represent the entire signature as a whole. The aim of the research is to come up with an efficient "acceptance/rejection" mechanism that can be used to verify the authenticity of a certain signature. Global features are less expensive to compute than local features, they provide fast verification, and should provide accurate verification results. After identifying the entire global set of attributes that are to be investigated, Cramer's v-statistics and information-theoretic entropy measures of association were used in …

Optimization Of Receptive Fields For Mlp Networks With Ensemble Encoding, Deena Osama Hassan Jun 2003

Optimization Of Receptive Fields For Mlp Networks With Ensemble Encoding, Deena Osama Hassan

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Ensemble encoding is a biologically-motivated, distributed data representation scheme for MLP networks. Multiple overlapping receptive fields are used to enhance locality of representation. The number, form, and placement of receptive fields have a great impact on performance. This thesis presents four heuristics, two based on descriptive statistics, and two based on clustering, for optimizing receptive field configuration, and compares their performance on four benchmark data sets. The two statistical approaches are based on the mean and median properties of the data set. The two clustering methods are the c-means and fuzzy c-means clustering. The four data sets used are well-known …

Texture Classification Using Transform Analysis, Mary Habib Jun 2003

Texture Classification Using Transform Analysis, Mary Habib

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The work presented in this thesis deals with the application of spectral methods for texture classification. The aim of the present work is to introduce a hybrid methodology for texture classification based on a spatial domain global pre-classifier together with a spectral classifier that utilizes multiresolution transform analysis. The reason for developing a spatial pre-classifier is that many discriminating features of textures are present in the spatial domain of the texture. Of these, global features such as intensity histograms and entropies can still add significant information to the texture classification process. The pre-classifier uses texture intensity histograms to derive histogram …

Image Segmentation With Ratio Cut, Song Wang, Jeffrey Mark Siskind Jun 2003

Image Segmentation With Ratio Cut, Song Wang, Jeffrey Mark Siskind

Faculty Publications

This paper proposes a new cost function, cut ratio, for segmenting images using graph-based methods. The cut ratio is defined as the ratio of the corresponding sums of two different weights of edges along the cut boundary and models the mean affinity between the segments separated by the boundary per unit boundary length. This new cost function allows the image perimeter to be segmented, guarantees that the segments produced by bipartitioning are connected, and does not introduce a size, shape, smoothness, or boundary-length bias. The latter allows it to produce segmentations where boundaries are aligned with image edges. Furthermore, the …

Efficient Resource Allocation And Call Admission Control In High Capacity Wireless Networks, Jiongkuan Hou May 2003

Efficient Resource Allocation And Call Admission Control In High Capacity Wireless Networks, Jiongkuan Hou

Dissertations

Resource Allocation (RA) and Call Admission Control (CAC) in wireless networks are processes that control the allocation of the limited radio resources to mobile stations (MS) in order to maximize the utilization efficiency of radio resources and guarantee the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of mobile users. In this dissertation, several distributed, adaptive and efficient RA/CAC schemes are proposed and analyzed, in order to improve the system utilization while maintaining the required QoS.

Since the most salient feature of the mobile wireless network is that users are moving, a Mobility Based Channel Reservation (MBCR) scheme is proposed which takes the …

Hop-Limited Routing For Multihop Cellular Networks, Cem Dincer May 2003

Hop-Limited Routing For Multihop Cellular Networks, Cem Dincer

Theses

In recent years, conventional cellular systems have experienced evolution in fields of data oriented services. During this period, the requirement for high data-rate stimulated new research proposals, which resulted in a new architecture: Multihop Cellular Networks (MCN), where multihop structure enables mobile stations to forward packets from other mobile stations to the base station on the uplink, and in turn, forward packets to other mobile stations from the base station on the downlink. In this thesis, a new routing algorithm is introduced for MCNs in order to limit the number of hops between the base station and the mobile stations …

Fpga Implementation Of A Cholesky Algorithm For A Shared-Memory Multiprocessor Architecture, Satchidanand G. Haridas

Theses

Solving a system of linear equations is a key problem in the field of engineering and science. Matrix factorization is a key component of many methods used to solve such equations. However, the factorization process is very time consuming, so these problems have traditionally been targeted for parallel machines rather than sequential ones. Nevertheless, commercially available supercomputers are expensive and only large institutions have the resources to purchase them or use them. Hence, efforts are on to develop more affordable alternatives. This thesis presents one such approach.

The work presented here is an implementation of a parallel version of the …

Design Of An Fpga-Based Parallel Simd Machine For Power Flow Analysis, Tirupathi Rao Kunta May 2003

Design Of An Fpga-Based Parallel Simd Machine For Power Flow Analysis, Tirupathi Rao Kunta

Theses

Power flow analysis consists of computationally intensive calculations on large matrices, consumes several hours of computational time, and has shown the need for the implementation of application-specific parallel machines. The potential of Single-Instruction stream Multiple-Data stream (SIMD) parallel architectures for efficient operations on large matrices has been demonstrated as seen in the case of many existing supercomputers. The unsuitability of existing parallel machines for low-cost power system applications, their long design cycles, and the difficulty in using them show the need for application-specific SIMI) machines. Advances in VLSI technology and Field-Programmable Gate-Arrays (FPGAs) enable the implementation of Custom Computing Machines …

The basic components of the new system are described and demonstrated, including image matching between …

Detecting Malfunction In Wireless Sensor Networks, Pablito C. Lake May 2003

Detecting Malfunction In Wireless Sensor Networks, Pablito C. Lake

Theses

The objective of this thesis is to detect malfunctioning sensors in wireless sensor networks. The ability to detect abnormality is critical to the security of any sensor network. However, the ability to detect a faulty wireless sensor is not trivial. Controlled repeatable experiments are difficult in wireless channels. A Redhat Linux. 7.0 Wireless Emulation Dynamic Switch software was used to solve this problem.

Six nodes were configured with a node acting as a base station. The nodes were all part of a cell. This means that every node could communicate with all other nodes. A client-server program simulated the background …

Intrusion Detection System For Ad Hoc Mobile Networks Using Neighborhood Watch Theory, Ramani Rajagopalan May 2003

Intrusion Detection System For Ad Hoc Mobile Networks Using Neighborhood Watch Theory, Ramani Rajagopalan

Theses

This study describes several experiments to simulate and study temperature sensor networks. The ultimate goal of this study is to accurately predict a temperature sensor failure in a sensor network, using Network Neighborhood Watch theory. Simulated temperature measurements are used to compare the results of accuracy, and quickness in detecting a failure in a malfunctioning sensor node. This is done by changing the intervals between temperature sampling, by considering different rates of temperature raise, as well as varying the number of nodes in the network neighborhood (deployment density). The thesis studies the threshold for temperature sensor failure by computing a …
