The Effect Of Time Delays On The Stability Of Load Balancing Algorithms For Parallel Computations, John Chiasson, Zhong Tang, Jean Ghanem, Chaouki T. Abdallah, J. Douglas Birdwell, Majeed M. Hayat, Henry Jérez

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

A deterministic dynamic nonlinear time-delay system is developed to model load balancing in a cluster of computer nodes used for parallel computations. The model is shown to be self consistent in that the queue lengths cannot go negative and the total number of tasks in all the queues and the network are conserved (i.e., load balancing can neither create nor lose tasks). Further, it is shown that using the proposed load balancing algorithms, the system is stable in the sense of Lyapunov. Experimental results are presented and compared with the predicted results from the analytical model. In particular, simulations of …

Exponential Time Response In Analogue And Geiger Mode Avalanche Photodiodes, C. Groves, C. H. Tan, J. P.R. David, G. J. Rees, Majeed M. Hayat

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The mean avalanche current impulse response in an avalanche photodiode exhibits an initial transient and then grows or decays, above or below breakdown, at exponential rates which depend only on the probability distributions of the electron and hole ionization events. The process continues while the electric field profile remains unchanged by the applied bias or the evolving space charge. Below breakdown the distribution in the avalanche duration also exhibits an initial transient and then decays exponentially at the same rate as the mean current. Below breakdown the standard deviation in current decays exponentially at one half of the rate of …

Theoretical Investigation Of Quantum-Dot Avalanche Photodiodes For Mid-Infrared Applications, Sanjay Krishna, Oh-Hyun Kwon, Majeed M. Hayat

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

A novel midinfrared sensor, called the quantum-dot avalanche photodiode (QDAP), is proposed which is expected to have improved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the presence of Johnson noise over its quantum-dot (QD) counterpart. In the QDAP, an intersubband QD detector is coupled with a thin, low-noise GaAs avalanche layer through a tunnel barrier. The avalanche layer provides the necessary photocurrent gain required to overcome Johnson noise and nearly achieve the dark-current-limited SNR of the QD detector. In the proposed three-terminal device, the applied biases of the QD-detector and the avalanche-photodiode sections of the QDAP are controlled separately. This feature permits the …

Lessons Learned With Arc, An Oai-Pmh Service Provider, Xiaoming Liu, Kurt Maly, Michael L. Nelson

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Web-based digital libraries have historically been built in isolation utilizing different technologies, protocols, and metadata. These differences hindered the development of digital library services that enable users to discover information from multiple libraries through a single unified interface. The Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) is a major, international effort to address technical interoperability among distributed repositories. Arc debuted in 2000 as the first end-user OAI-PMH service provider. Since that time, Arc has grown to include nearly 7,000,000 metadata records. Arc has been deployed in a number of environments and has served as the basis for many other …

Information-Theoretic Criterion For The Performance Of Single-Photon Avalanche Photodiodes, David A. Ramirez, Majeed M. Hayat, Sergio N. Torres, Bahaa E.A. Saleh, Malvin Carl Teich Jan 2005

Information-Theoretic Criterion For The Performance Of Single-Photon Avalanche Photodiodes, David A. Ramirez, Majeed M. Hayat, Sergio N. Torres, Bahaa E.A. Saleh, Malvin Carl Teich

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

A channel-capacity metric is introduced for assessing the performance of single-photon avalanche photodiodes (SPADs) when used as detectors in laser communication systems. This metric is employed to theoretically optimize, with respect to the device structure and operating voltage, the performance of SPADs with simple InP or In/sub 0.52/Al/sub 0.48/As-InP heterojunction multiplication regions. As the multiplication-region width increases, an increase is predicted in both the peak and the full-width at half-maximum of the channel capacity curve versus the normalized excess voltage. Calculations also show the existence of an optimal In/sub 0.52/Al/sub 0.48/As-InP heterojunction multiplication region that maximizes the peak channel capacity …

Gain-Bandwidth Product Optimization Of Heterostructure Avalanche Photodiodes, Oh-Hyun Kwon, Majeed M. Hayat, Joe C. Campbell, Bahaa E.A. Saleh, Malvin Carl Teich

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

A generalized history-dependent recurrence theory for the time-response analysis is derived for avalanche photodiodes with multilayer, heterojunction multiplication regions. The heterojunction multiplication region considered consists of two layers: a high-bandgap Al/sub 0.6/Ga/sub 0.4/As energy-buildup layer, which serves to heat up the primary electrons, and a GaAs layer, which serves as the primary avalanching layer. The model is used to optimize the gain-bandwidth product (GBP) by appropriate selection of the width of the energy-buildup layer for a given width of the avalanching layer. The enhanced GBP is a direct consequence of the heating of primary electrons in the energy-buildup layer, which …

Open Source Software For Commercial Off-The-Shelf Gps Receivers, Andrew Greenberg

Dissertations and Theses

Inexpensive and commercially available Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers can be used in novel applications, such as nanosatellites and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), by modifying the receiver's software. Unfortunately, typical GPS software development systems cost tens of thousands of dollars and have restrictive license agreements, such as non-disclosure agreements, for both their hardware and software. This thesis describes the design and construction of an open source GPS receiver development system that addresses these unnecessary restrictions. For the first time, any developer with a PC, a commercially available GPS receiver, and this development system can quickly and easily develop software for …

Sigma-Delta Voltage To Frequency Converter With Phase Modulation Possibility, Milan Stork Jan 2005

Sigma-Delta Voltage To Frequency Converter With Phase Modulation Possibility, Milan Stork

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Voltage to frequency converter (VFC) is an oscillator whose frequency is linearly proportional to control voltage. There are two common VFC architectures: the current steering multivibrator and the charge-balance VFC. For higher linearity, the charge-balancing method is preferred. The charge balanced VFC may be made in asynchronous or synchronous (clocked) forms. The synchronous charge balanced VFC or "sigma delta" (\Sigma-\Delta) VFC is used when output pulses are synchronized to a clock. The charge balance VFC is more complex, more demanding in its supply voltage and current requirements, and more accurate. It is capable of 16 to18 bit linearity. In this …

Design, Simulation And Tests Of A Low-Cost Microstrip Patch Antenna Arrays For The Wireless Communication, Gonca Çakir, Levent Sevgi̇ Jan 2005

Design, Simulation And Tests Of A Low-Cost Microstrip Patch Antenna Arrays For The Wireless Communication, Gonca Çakir, Levent Sevgi̇

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Typical low-cost, low-weight microstrip base station antenna arrays with beam-scanning capabilities are taken into account. In downtowns of large cities like New York, Chicago, and in historical cities like Istanbul, where high buildings are separated by narrow but densely occupied streets, antenna arrays with approximately 20°-35° beam-widths are required to complete the cellular communication coverage. To meet this requirement, new antenna arrays are designed with 35° beam-widths and 60° electronic scanning capabilities. Their characteristics are investigated both numerically and experimentally. An FDTD-based antenna simulation package (M-PATCH) is prepared, tested on canonical structures and against the literature first, for verification and …

Computation Of Association Probabilities For Single Target Tracking With The Use Of Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System, İlke Türkmen, Keri̇m Güney Jan 2005

Computation Of Association Probabilities For Single Target Tracking With The Use Of Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System, İlke Türkmen, Keri̇m Güney

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, a simple method based on the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) is presented for computing the association probabilities. The computed association probabilities are used to track the single manoeuvring target in the cluttered environment. A hybrid learning algorithm, which combines the least square method and the backpropagation algorithm, is used to identify the parameters of ANFIS. The tracks estimated by using the method proposed in this study are in very good agreement with the true tracks. Better accuracy with respect to the well known nearest neighbour Kalman filter and probabilistic data association algorithms is obtained.

Soft Computing Methods In Microwave Active Device Modeling, Yavuz Cengi̇z, Fi̇li̇z Güneş, Mehmet Fati̇h Çağlar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this work, the signal and noise behaviors of a microwave transistor within its operation domain (CT,V_{DS}, I_{DS}, f) are modeled by the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Fuzzy Logic System (FLS) without using any information on the microwave circuit theory . A worked example is presented where the same data is employed for both models selected from the manufacturer's data sheets. Performances of the FLS and ANN models are compared and conclusions are drawn.

Impacts Of Distributed Generators On The Oscillatory Stability Of Interconnected Power Systems, İstemi̇han Genç, Ömer Usta Jan 2005

Impacts Of Distributed Generators On The Oscillatory Stability Of Interconnected Power Systems, İstemi̇han Genç, Ömer Usta

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Integration of distributed generation is continually and gradually affecting the stability of interconnected power systems. In this paper, the impacts of distributed synchronous generators on oscillatory stability are studied. In various parameter sub-spaces of interest, feasibility regions can be calculated to determine the conditions to sustain the stable operation of an interconnected power system. Through computations of the feasibility boundaries corresponding to Hopf bifurcations of electromechanical oscillatory modes, we determine the operating limits for a stable operation of the system under small and continual disturbances such as predictable changes in loading conditions of generators. Thus, with the case studies given …

Fault Tolerant Control With Re-Configuring Sliding-Mode Schemes, Ufuk Demi̇rci̇, Feza Kerestecioğlu Jan 2005

Fault Tolerant Control With Re-Configuring Sliding-Mode Schemes, Ufuk Demi̇rci̇, Feza Kerestecioğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a controller design method for linear MIMO systems is presented which a sliding mode controller is reconfigured in case of system faults. Faults are detected with the residual vector generated from a standard linear observer. Once a fault has been detected the fault distribution matrix can be obtained and used to update the corrective or equivalent control parts of the sliding mode controller. As a result, fault tolerant adaptive controllers keep the system performance within acceptable limits or at least avoids the system to wind-up.

Turbo Codes: The Issue Of Average Union Upper Bound Under Imperfect Channel State Information In Rayleigh Fading Channels, Erhan A. İnce, Syed Amjad Ali

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The potential of turbo codes to demonstrate excellent performance in the region of low signal to noise ratio is now a familiar fact. The idea of turbo codes was first introduced by Berrou and was based on the clever utilization of the existing decoding mechanism of BCJR with a change in the encoder by introducing feedback and an interleaver in the overall scheme. Since then, these powerful forward error correcting codes have attained a significant attention and have either replaced or have become a sturdy candidate for many applications in this era of modern communication systems. So far, a lot …

Two-Variable Scattering Formulas To Describe Some Classes Of Lossles Two-Ports With Mixed, Lumped Elements And Commensurate Stubs, Ahmet Sertbaş

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Using the semi-analytic method based on the construction of two-variable scattering functions, which describe lossless two-ports with two kinds of elements, for some classes of ladder networks formed with lumped elements and commensurate stubs, the explicit descriptive formulas are produced up to six mixed-elements. To exhibit the efficiency of the explicit descriptive equations in the design of the broadband microwave circuits, a single matching design problem (UHF antenna matching) is solved by using the obtained two-variable scattering formulas.

A Content-Based Fuzzy Image Database Based On The Fuzzy Artmap Architecture, M. Uysal, Fatoş Tünay Yarman Vural

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A major design issue in content-based image retrieval system is the selection of the feature set. This study attacks the problem of finding a discriminative feature for each class, which is optimal in some sense. Fuzzy ARTMAP architecture is used to find this discriminative feature set. For this purpose, initially, a large variety of features are extracted from the regions of the pre-segmented images. Then, the feature set of each object class is learned using the Fuzzy Art Map Architecture, by identifying the weights of each feature for each object class. In the querying phase, trained set of feature weights …

Most organizations have formal and informal elements. Formal structures are usually documented in organizational charts showing chain of command, levels of authority, and personnel resources. The actual effectiveness of the organization or specific individuals may actually depend on informal structures and internal communication networks. These are by definition personality-dependent and may provide significant insight into how work actually gets done within the organization. Effective leaders will want insight into these informal structures for various reasons. Inefficient decision-making or staffing processes may result in unnecessary or redundant communications, chokepoints, or single points of failure, each of which can either delay decisions …

Minimum Power Configuration In Wireless Sensor Networks, Guoliang Xing, Chenyang Lu, Ying Zhang, Qingfeng Huang, Robert Pless Dec 2004

Minimum Power Configuration In Wireless Sensor Networks, Guoliang Xing, Chenyang Lu, Ying Zhang, Qingfeng Huang, Robert Pless

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper proposes the minimum power configuration (MPC) approach to energy conservation in wireless sensor networks. In sharp contrast to earlier research that treats topology control, power-aware routing, and sleep management in isolation, MPC integrates them as a joint optimization prob-lem in which the power configurationof a network consists of a set of active nodes and the transmission powers of the nodes. We show through analysis that the minimum power configu-ration of a network is inherently dependent on the data rates of sources. We propose several approximation algorithms with provable performance bounds compared to the optimal solu-tion, and a practical …
