Paper Session Iii: Research Brief: A Curriculum For Teaching Information Technology Investigative Techniques For Auditors, Grover S. Kearns, Elizabeth V. Mulig

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Recent prosecutions of highly publicized white-collar crimes combined with public outrage have resulted in heightened regulation and greater emphasis on systems of internal control. Because both white-collar and cybercrimes are usually perpetrated through computers, auditors’ knowledge of information technology (IT) is now more vital than ever. However, preserving digital evidence and investigative techniques, which can be essential to fraud examinations, are not skills frequently taught in accounting programs. Furthermore, many students are not instructed in the use of computer assisted auditing tools and techniques – applications that might uncover fraudulent activity. Only a limited number of university-level accounting classes provide …

Paper Session Ii: Forensic Scene Documentation Using Mobile Technology, Ibrahim Baggili Apr 2006

Paper Session Ii: Forensic Scene Documentation Using Mobile Technology, Ibrahim Baggili

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

This paper outlines a framework for integrating forensic scene documentation with mobile technology. Currently there are no set standards for documenting a forensic scene. Nonetheless, there is a conceptual framework that forensic scientists and engineers use that includes note taking, scene sketches, photographs, video, and voice interview recordings. This conceptual framework will be the basis that a mobile forensic scene documentation software system is built on. A mobile software system for documenting a forensic scene may help in standardizing forensic scene documentation by regulating the data collection and documentation processes for various forensic disciplines.

An Lmi Approach To Discrete-Time Observer Design With Stochastic Resilience, Edwin E. Yaz, Chung Seop Jeong, Yvonne I. Yaz Apr 2006

An Lmi Approach To Discrete-Time Observer Design With Stochastic Resilience, Edwin E. Yaz, Chung Seop Jeong, Yvonne I. Yaz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Much of the recent work on robust control or observer design has focused on preservation of stability of the controlled system or the convergence of the observer in the presence of parameter perturbations in the plant or the measurement model. The present work addresses the important problem of stochastic resilience or non-fragility of a discrete-time Luenberger observer which is the maintenance of convergence and/or performance when the observer is erroneously implemented possibly due to computational errors i.e. round off errors in digital implementation or sensor errors, etc. A common linear matrix inequality framework is presented to address the stochastic resilient …

Combinatorial Fusion Criteria For Real-Time Tracking, D. Frank Hsu, Damian M. Lyons, Jizhou Ai Apr 2006

Combinatorial Fusion Criteria For Real-Time Tracking, D. Frank Hsu, Damian M. Lyons, Jizhou Ai

Faculty Publications

We address the problem of automated video tracking of targets when targets undergo multiple mutual occlusions. Our approach is based on the idea that as targets are occluded, selection of feature subsets and combinations of those features are effective in identifying the target and improving tracking performance. We use Combinatorial Fusion Analysis to develop a metric to select which subset of features will produce the most accurate tracking. In particular we show that the combination of a pair of features A and B will improve the accuracy only if (a) A and B have relative high performance, and (b) A …

Feature Selection For Real-Time Tracking, D. Frank Hsu, Damian M. Lyons, Jizhou Ai

Faculty Publications

We address the problem of selecting features to improve automated video tracking of targets that undergo multiple mutual occlusions. As targets are occluded, different feature subsets and combinations of those features are effective in identifying the target and improving tracking performance. We use Combinatorial Fusion Analysis to develop a metric to dynamically select which subset of features will produce the most accurate tracking. In particular we show that the combination of a pair of features A and B will improve the accuracy only if (a) A and B have relative high performance, and (b) A and B are diverse. We …

Testing Hypotheses On Simulated Data: Why Traditional Hypotheses-Testing Statistics Are Not Always Adequate For Simulated Data, And How To Modify Them, Richard Aló, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott A. Starks Apr 2006

Testing Hypotheses On Simulated Data: Why Traditional Hypotheses-Testing Statistics Are Not Always Adequate For Simulated Data, And How To Modify Them, Richard Aló, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott A. Starks

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To check whether a new algorithm is better, researchers use traditional statistical techniques for hypotheses testing. In particular, when the results are inconclusive, they run more and more simulations (n2>n1, n3>n2, ..., nm) until the results become conclusive. In this paper, we point out that these results may be misleading. Indeed, in the traditional approach, we select a statistic and then choose a threshold for which the probability of this statistic "accidentally" exceeding this threshold is smaller than, say, 1%. It is very easy to run additional simulations with ever-larger n. The probability of error is still 1% …

Expert System-Type Approach To Voice Disorders: Scheduling Botulinum Toxin Treatment For Adductor Spasmodic Dysphonia, Anthony P. Salvatore, Amitava Biswas, Vladik Kreinovich, Bertha Manriquez, Michael P. Cannito, Robert J. Sinard Apr 2006

Expert System-Type Approach To Voice Disorders: Scheduling Botulinum Toxin Treatment For Adductor Spasmodic Dysphonia, Anthony P. Salvatore, Amitava Biswas, Vladik Kreinovich, Bertha Manriquez, Michael P. Cannito, Robert J. Sinard

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the most debilitating disorders is adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD), a voice disorder caused by involuntary movements of the muscles of the larynx (voice box). For treating ADSD, botulinum toxin (BT) injections turned out to be very useful. However, the effects of BT are highly variable, so at present, there is no objective criterion of when such a BT treatment is necessary. It is therefore desirable to develop such a criterion.

In this paper, we show that traditional statistical techniques are unable to generate such a criterion, while a natural expert system approach seems to be capable of generating …

Estimating Information Amount Under Interval Uncertainty: Algorithmic Solvability And Computational Complexity, Gang Xiang, Olga Kosheleva, George J. Klir Apr 2006

Estimating Information Amount Under Interval Uncertainty: Algorithmic Solvability And Computational Complexity, Gang Xiang, Olga Kosheleva, George J. Klir

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In most real-life situations, we have uncertainty: we do not know the exact state of the world, there are several (n) different states which are consistent with our knowledge. In such situations, it is desirable to gauge how much information we need to gain to determine the actual state of the world. A natural measure of this amount of information is the average number of "yes"-"no" questions that we need to ask to find the exact state. When we know the probabilities p1,...,pn of different states, then, as Shannon has shown, this number of questions can be determined as S=-p1 …

A Formal Specification In Jml Of The Java Security Package, Poonam Agarwal, Carlos E. Rubio-Medrano, Yoonsik Cheon, Patricia J. Teller Apr 2006

A Formal Specification In Jml Of The Java Security Package, Poonam Agarwal, Carlos E. Rubio-Medrano, Yoonsik Cheon, Patricia J. Teller

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The Java security package allows a programmer to add security features to Java applications. Although the package provides a complex application programming interface (API), its informal description, e.g., Javadoc comments, is often ambiguous or imprecise. Nonetheless, the security of an application can be compromised if the package is used without a concrete understanding of the precise behavior of the API classes and interfaces, which can be attained via formal specification. In this paper, we present our experiences in formally specifying the Java security package in JML, a formal behavior interface specification language for Java. We illustrate portions of our JML …

Fast Computation Of Centroids For Constant-Width Interval-Valued Fuzzy Sets, Jerry M. Mendel, Hongwei Wu, Vladik Kreinovich, Gang Xiang Apr 2006

Fast Computation Of Centroids For Constant-Width Interval-Valued Fuzzy Sets, Jerry M. Mendel, Hongwei Wu, Vladik Kreinovich, Gang Xiang

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Interval-valued fuzzy sets provide a more adequate description of uncertainty than traditional fuzzy sets; it is therefore important to use interval-valued fuzzy sets in applications. One of the main applications of fuzzy sets is fuzzy control, and one of the most computationally intensive part of fuzzy control is defuzzification. Since a transition to interval-valued fuzzy sets usually increases the amount of computations, it is vitally important to design faster algorithms for the corresponding defuzzification. In this paper, we provide such an algorithm for a practically important case of constant-width interval-valued fuzzy sets

Topaz: A Firefox Protocol Extension For Gridftp Based On Data Flow Diagrams, Richard Zamudio, Daniel Catarino, Michela Taufer, Brent Stearn, Karan Bhatia

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

As grid infrastructures mature, an increasing challenge is to provide end-user scientists with intuitive interfaces to computational services, data management capabilities, and visualization tools. The current approach used in a number of cyber-infrastructure projects is to leverage the capabilities of the Mozilla framework to provide rich end-user tools that seamlessly integrate with remote resources such as web/grid services and data repositories.

In this paper we apply rigorous software engineering tools, Data Flow Diagrams or DFDs, to guide the design, implementation, and performance analysis of Topaz, a GridFTP protocol extension to the Firefox browser. GridFTP servers, similar to FTP servers used …

A Multilane Pipelined Architecture For Real Time Enhancement Of Color Video Streams, Adam Redd Livingston Apr 2006

A Multilane Pipelined Architecture For Real Time Enhancement Of Color Video Streams, Adam Redd Livingston

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Video stream enhancement is a key fixture in a wide variety of applications from video surveillance, automatic navigation, medical imagery, to facial/object recognition systems. When a video stream contains non-uniform lighting it can be difficult to obtain what is in the darker regions without over enhancing brighter regions. The Adaptive and Integrated Neighborhood Dependant Approach for Nonlinear Enhancement (AINDANE) algorithm combines a tunable nonlinear transfer function, convolution by a multi-scale Gaussian kernel, and tunable contrast enhancement to address this problem for a single image. Luminance values are tuned based on the global cumulative distribution function (CDF) of an image. Contrast …

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The following thesis presents the results of a project to develop and test an omnidirectional robotic system (hardware and software) at NASA Langley Research Center's Robotics and Intelligent Machines Lab. The impetus for the project was the unique capabilities of omnidirectional systems. Some of the many potential benefits these systems have include improved material-handling capabilities in constrained environments (such as might be found in extraterrestrial manned habitats), efficient camera-based vehicle teleoperation, and simplified route planning for autonomous robot operations.

The project's focus was to design, build, and test a system that used Mecanum wheels to achieve omnidirectional motion. In addition …

Information Visualization Methods And Techniques Using Web Services, Kevin Dupigny Apr 2006

Information Visualization Methods And Techniques Using Web Services, Kevin Dupigny

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Data, even in small amounts, can be difficult to interpret quickly and efficiently. Data domains are continually expanding and making this data available and usable in collaborative data environment is a challenge that was not addressed by legacy systems. Such a framework would make the existence of a global information sharing system feasible. Visualizing this complex dataset presents a complex task for current static interface solutions. A flexible layered service oriented model is presented in this work to approach this challenge. The visual scope of human perception is largely untapped by today's data visualization applications. Human mental processes are adept …

A Component Based Formal Ontology Model, A Method For Evaluating Such A Model, And The Results Of An Application Of That Method, Charles Tumitsa Apr 2006

A Component Based Formal Ontology Model, A Method For Evaluating Such A Model, And The Results Of An Application Of That Method, Charles Tumitsa

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

For systems to truly communicate effectively, more than just data interchange is necessary. The systems must achieve conceptual interoperability, which implies communicating with understanding.

The LCIM (Levels of Conceptual Interoperability Model) describes a number of levels of interoperability, each of which shows systems with an increased amount of conceptual understanding of the other systems they are communicating with. The lowest levels of this model, technical and syntactic interoperability, are achieved (and there are many existing examples) via data exchange in a number of different ways. Research has shown, however, that to attain higher levels of conceptual understanding, that there must …
