To License Or Not To License Revisited: An Examination Of State Statutes Regarding Private Investigators And Digital Examiners, Thomas Lonardo, Doug White, Alan Rea

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

In this update to the previous year's study, the authors examine statutes that regulate, license, and enforce investigative functions in each US state. After identification and review of Private Investigator licensing requirements, the authors find that very few state statutes explicitly differentiate between Private Investigators and Digital Examiners. After contacting all state agencies the authors present a distinct grouping organizing state approaches to professional Digital Examiner licensing. The authors conclude that states must differentiate between Private Investigator and Digital Examiner licensing requirements and oversight.

The Impact Of Hard Disk Firmware Steganography On Computer Forensics, Iain Sutherland, Gareth Davies, Nick Pringle, Andrew Blyth Jan 2009

The Impact Of Hard Disk Firmware Steganography On Computer Forensics, Iain Sutherland, Gareth Davies, Nick Pringle, Andrew Blyth

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The hard disk drive is probably the predominant form of storage media and is a primary data source in a forensic investigation. The majority of available software tools and literature relating to the investigation of the structure and content contained within a hard disk drive concerns the extraction and analysis of evidence from the various file systems which can reside in the user accessible area of the disk. It is known that there are other areas of the hard disk drive which could be used to conceal information, such as the Host Protected Area and the Device Configuration Overlay. There …

Electronic Forms-Based Computing For Evidentiary Analysis, Andy Luse, Brian Mennecke, Anthony M. Townsend

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The paperwork associated with evidentiary collection and analysis is a highly repetitive and time-consuming process which often involves duplication of work and can frequently result in documentary errors. Electronic entry of evidencerelated information can facilitate greater accuracy and less time spent on data entry. This manuscript describes a general framework for the implementation of an electronic tablet-based system for evidentiary processing. This framework is then utilized in the design and implementation of an electronic tablet-based evidentiary input prototype system developed for use by forensic laboratories which serves as a verification of the proposed framework. The manuscript concludes with a discussion …

Graduate Accounting Students' Perception Of It Forensics: A Multi-Dimensional Analysis, Grover S. Kearns Jan 2009

Graduate Accounting Students' Perception Of It Forensics: A Multi-Dimensional Analysis, Grover S. Kearns

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Forensics and information technology (IT) have become increasingly important to accountants and auditors. Undergraduate accounting students are introduced to general IT topics but discussion of forensic knowledge is limited. A few schools have introduced an undergraduate major in forensic accounting. Some graduate schools offer accounting students an emphasis in forensic or fraud accounting that includes instruction in forensics and information technology. When students do not view the IT topics as being equally important to their careers as traditional accounting topics, these attitudes may reduce the quality of the course. In an effort to assess student attitudes, a survey of 46 …

A Covert Encryption Method For Applications In Electronic Data Interchange, Jonathan Blackledge, Dmitry Dubovitskiy Jan 2009

A Covert Encryption Method For Applications In Electronic Data Interchange, Jonathan Blackledge, Dmitry Dubovitskiy

Articles

A principal weakness of all encryption systems is that the output data can be ‘seen’ to be encrypted. In other words, encrypted data provides a ‘flag’ on the potential value of the information that has been encrypted. In this paper, we provide a new approach to ‘hiding’ encrypted data in a digital image.

In conventional (symmetric) encryption, the plaintext is usually represented as a binary stream and encrypted using an XOR type operation with a binary cipher. The algorithm used is ideally designed to: (i) generate a maximum entropy cipher so that there is no bias with regard to any …

Modelling Situation Awareness For Context‐Aware Decision Support, Yu-Hong Feng, Teck-Hou Teng, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Situation awareness modelling is popularly used in the command and control domain for situation assessment and decision support. However, situation models in real-world applications are typically complex and not easy to use. This paper presents a Context-aware Decision Support (CaDS) system, which consists of a situation model for shared situation awareness modelling and a group of entity agents, one for each individual user, for focused and customized decision support. By incorporating a rule-based inference engine, the entity agents provide functions including event classification, action recommendation, and proactive decision making. The implementation and the performance of the proposed system are demonstrated …

Many of the techniques used in this paper currently are implemented in a software GasDayTM, which is currently used by 24 LDCs …

Dynamic Task Prediction For An Spmt Architecture Based On Control Independence, Komal Jothi Jan 2009

Dynamic Task Prediction For An Spmt Architecture Based On Control Independence, Komal Jothi

Dissertations and Theses

Exploiting better performance from computer programs translates to finding more instructions to execute in parallel. Since most general purpose programs are written in an imperatively sequential manner, closely lying instructions are always data dependent, making the designer look far ahead into the program for parallelism. This necessitates wider superscalar processors with larger instruction windows. But superscalars suffer from three key limitations, their inability to scale, sequential fetch bottleneck and high branch misprediction penalty. Recent studies indicate that current superscalars have reached the end of the road and designers will have to look for newer ideas to build computer processors.

Speculative …

Hierarchical Routing In Manets Using Simple Clustering, Adam Carnine Jan 2009

Hierarchical Routing In Manets Using Simple Clustering, Adam Carnine

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This thesis presents both a review of current MANET routing protocols and a new MANET routing algorithm. The routing protocols reviewed include representative samples from the three primary forms of routing found in MANETS: proactive routing, reactive routing and hybrid routing. Secure algorithms are given special treatment in the review. In addition several protocol enhancements are discussed.

The proposed routing protocol is designed to support networks of a medium size, containing over 200 nodes but less than 3,000 nodes. The design is intentionally simple to allow ease of implementation in comparison with other MANET protocols that provide similar functionality.

We model an electronic differential that will offer the best vehicle stability on a curved road. The proposed traction system consists of two permanent magnet synchronous (PMS) machines that ensure the drive of two back-driving wheels. The contribution of each wheel to the advance of the vehicle is represented by an element conveying the accumulation of mechanical coupling. The proposed control structure is based on the direct torque fuzzy control for each wheel-motor. Different simulations have been carried out: vehicle driven ons straight road, vehicle driven on straight road with slope, and vehicle driven over a road curved left and …

Accurate Prediction Of Crosstalk For Rc Interconnects, Selahatti̇n Sayil, Merlyn Rudrapati

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This work proposes an accurate crosstalk noise estimation method in the presence of multiple RC lines for use in design automation tools. The method correctly models the loading effects of non switching aggressors and aggressor tree branches using resistive shielding effect and realistic exponential input waveform. Noise peak and width expressions derived show very good results in comparison to HSPICE results. Results show that average error for noise peak is 4.1% and for the width is 6.8% while allowing for very fast analysis.

Voltage Control Of Self-Excited Induction Generator Using Genetic Algorithm, Dheeraj Joshi, Kanwarjit Singh Sandhu, Mahender Kumar Soni Jan 2009

Voltage Control Of Self-Excited Induction Generator Using Genetic Algorithm, Dheeraj Joshi, Kanwarjit Singh Sandhu, Mahender Kumar Soni

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Self-excited induction generators (SEIG) are found to be most suitable candidate for wind energy conversion application required at remote windy locations. Such generators are not able to maintain the terminal voltage with load as, a literature survey reveals, the voltage profile falls sharply with load. In this paper an attempt has been made to improve the voltage profile of a self-excited induction generator. A new methodology based upon Genetic Algorithm (GA) is proposed to compute the steady state performance of the model including core loss branch. Further efforts are made to control the terminal voltage under loaded conditions. Simulated results …

Parameter Identification Of A Separately Excited Dc Motor Via Inverse Problem Methodology, Mounir Hadef, Mohamed Rachid Mekideche Jan 2009

Parameter Identification Of A Separately Excited Dc Motor Via Inverse Problem Methodology, Mounir Hadef, Mohamed Rachid Mekideche

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Identification is considered to be among the main applications of inverse theory and its objective for a given physical system is to use data which is easily observable, to infer some of the geometric parameters which are not directly observable. In this paper, a parameter identification method using inverse problem methodology is proposed. The minimisation of the objective function with respect to the desired vector of design parameters is the most important procedure in solving the inverse problem. The conjugate gradient method is used to determine the unknown parameters, and Tikhonov's regularization method is then used to replace the original …

Cdm Based Controller Design For Nonlinear Heat Exchanger Process, Erkan İmal Jan 2009

Cdm Based Controller Design For Nonlinear Heat Exchanger Process, Erkan İmal

Most processes are nonlinear, and their control is a difficult yet important problem. The heat exchanger is an example onesuch nonlinear process. In the present paper, the effect of process nonlinearity on the performance of set point tracking and disturbance rejection in two controller methods is investigated. Initially, afirst order plus dead time (FOPDT) model of the process is obtainedvia a software known as Loop-Pro Trainer. Then, the PI-controller tuning values are computed using the internal model control (IMC) correlations based on truncated (first-order) Taylor series approximation. Next, another controller is designed using the coefficient diagram method (CDM). Finally, the …

Polymorphic Worm Detection Using Strong Token-Pair Signatures, Burak Bayoğlu, İbrahi̇m Soğukpinar Jan 2009

Polymorphic Worm Detection Using Strong Token-Pair Signatures, Burak Bayoğlu, İbrahi̇m Soğukpinar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Malicious software has become a big threat to information systems, which are widely used to store, transfer and process information for many critical assets. Worms are one of the most harmful network-enabled malicious software that can threaten networks and applications. Two main characteristics of worms distinguish them from the well-known virus programs and as a result are much more dangerous than the virus programs. First, they do not need to attach themselves to an existing program. Second, worms do not require end-user interaction to realize the intended attack. Therefore, a large number of victims can be infected in a short …

Construction And Applications Of The Dirichlet-To-Neumann Operator In Transmission Line Modeling, Thomas Demeester, Daniel De Zutter Jan 2009

Construction And Applications Of The Dirichlet-To-Neumann Operator In Transmission Line Modeling, Thomas Demeester, Daniel De Zutter

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) operator is a useful tool in the characterization of interconnect structures. In combination with the Method of Moments, it can be used for the calculation of the per-unit length transmission line parameters of multi-conductor interconnections, or to directly determine the internal impedance of conductors. This paper presents a new and fast calculation method for the DtN boundary operator in the important case of rectangular structures, based on the superposition of parallel-plate waveguide modes. Especially for its non-differential form, some numerical issues need to be addressed. It is further explained how the DtN operator can be determined for …

Variance And Kurtosis-Based Characterization Of Resonances In Stochastic Transmission Lines: Local Versus Global Random Geometries, Ousmane Sy, Martijn Van Beurden, Bastiaan Michielsen, Antonius Tijhuis Jan 2009

Variance And Kurtosis-Based Characterization Of Resonances In Stochastic Transmission Lines: Local Versus Global Random Geometries, Ousmane Sy, Martijn Van Beurden, Bastiaan Michielsen, Antonius Tijhuis

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A stochastic method is proposed to characterize electromagnetic couplings involving geometrically perturbed transmission lines. A combined exploitation of suitably defined statistical tools is presented to appreciate the intensity of the dispersion of response variables both physically via the variance, and statistically through the kurtosis or fourth-order moment. The usefulness of this method to analyze resonances is illustrated by the study of a transmission line affected by two different types of random geometrical perturbations, viz. a local deformation modeled by a wavelet and global sinusoidal undulations.

Two Dimensional Ebg Structures For Multiband Noise Mitigation, Antonio Orlandi, Antonio Ciccomancini

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper a two dimensional (2D) electromagnetic Bandgap (EBG) structure is proposed for multi band noise mitigation in PWR/GND plane pairs. Excellent noise suppression (-60 dB) is achieved in multiple bands within the range 0--8 GHz with a low start frequency. Because of the 2D EBG, no additional metal layer is required. Signal Integrity analysis is also studied by modelling a microstrip to stripline transition (both single ended and differential) and by evaluating insertion loss, TDR as well as eye diagram.

Measurement Of Phonemic Degradation In Sensorineural Hearing Loss Using A Computational Model Of The Auditory Periphery, Andrew Hines, Naomi Harte Jan 2009

Measurement Of Phonemic Degradation In Sensorineural Hearing Loss Using A Computational Model Of The Auditory Periphery, Andrew Hines, Naomi Harte

Conference papers

A computational model of the auditory periphery enables faster investigation of new signal processing algorithms for hearing aids. This paper presents a study of the degradation of auditory nerve (AN) responses at a phonetic level for a range of sensorineural hearing losses. The AN model of Zilany & Bruce was used to compute responses to a diverse set of phoneme rich sentences from the TIMIT database. The characteristics of both the average discharge rate and spike timing of the responses are discussed. The experiments demonstrate that the model responses are consistent with respect to impairment and inaudible thresholds.
