Microsoft Silverlight Photography Framework: Comparing Component Based Designs In Adobe Flex And Microsoft Silverlight, David Roossien
Microsoft Silverlight Photography Framework: Comparing Component Based Designs In Adobe Flex And Microsoft Silverlight, David Roossien
Masters Projects
Flex and Silverlight provide large Application Programming Interfaces (API’s). Applications can be designed using a variety of architectures. The purpose of this paper is not to perform a complete comparison between Flex and Silverlight. To do such a comparison would require massive amounts of time and research. The purpose of this paper is to describe the design and implementation of the Silverlight photography framework project. Along the way this paper compares the Silverlight project to the Adobe Flex project and discusses the goals of each product. During the comparison many important similarities and differences between Silverlight and Flex technologies are …
Symmetry Between True, False, And Uncertain: An Explanation, Eulalia Szmidt, Vladik Kreinovich
Symmetry Between True, False, And Uncertain: An Explanation, Eulalia Szmidt, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In intuitionistic fuzzy sets, there is a natural symmetry between degrees of truth and falsity. As a result, for such sets, natural similarity measures are symmetric relative to an exchange of true and false values. It has been recently shown that among such measures, the most intuitively reasonable are the ones which are also symmetric relative to an arbitrary permutation of degrees of truth, falsity, and uncertainty. This intuitive reasonableness leads to a conjecture that such permutations are not simply mathematical constructions, that these permutations also have some intuitive sense. In this paper, we show that each such permutation can …

In this paper, we present a scene-based nouniformity correction (NUC) method using a modified adaptive least mean square (LMS) algorithm with a novel gating operation on the updates. The gating is designed to significantly reduce ghosting artifacts produced by many scene-based NUC algorithms by halting updates when temporal variation is lacking. We define the algorithm and present a number of experimental results to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method in comparison to several previously published methods including other LMS and constant statistics based methods. The experimental results include simulated imagery and a real infrared image sequence. We show that …

On The Use Of Abstract Workflows To Capture Scientific Process Provenance, Paulo Pinheiro Da Silva, Leonardo Salayandia, Nicholas Del Rio, Ann Q. Gates
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Capturing provenance about artifacts produced by distributed scientific processes is a challenging task. For example, one approach to facilitate the execution of a scientific process in distributed environments is to break down the process into components and to create workflow specifications to orchestrate the execution of these components. However, capturing provenance in such an environment, even with the guidance of orchestration logic, is difficult because of important details that may be hidden by the component abstractions. In this paper, we show how to use abstract workflows to systematically enhance scientific processes to capture provenance at appropriate levels of detail. Abstract …

"Weird" Fuzzy Notations: An Algebraic Interpretation, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Traditionally, fuzzy logic used non-standard notations like m1/x1 + ... + mn/xn for a function that attains the value m1 at x1, ..., and the value mn at xn. In this paper, we provide an algebraic explanation for these notations.

Design Of Acousto-Optic Chaos Based Secure Free-Space Optical Communication Links, Anjan K. Ghosh, Pramode K. Verma, Samuel Cheng, Robert C. Huck, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Mohammed A. Al-Saedi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
We discuss the design of an acousto-optic cell based free space optical communication link where the data beam is made secure through chaos encryption. Using external signal modulation of the diffracted light from a hybrid acousto-optic cell chaos (or directly via incorporation in the sound-cell driver's bias voltage) encryption of data is possible. We have shown numerically that decryption of the encoded data is possible by using an identical acousto-optic system in the receiver.
Inferring Gene Regulatory Networks From Time Series Microarray Data, Peng Li
Inferring Gene Regulatory Networks From Time Series Microarray Data, Peng Li
Dissertations
The innovations and improvements in high-throughput genomic technologies, such as DNA microarray, make it possible for biologists to simultaneously measure dependencies and regulations among genes on a genome-wide scale and provide us genetic information. An important objective of the functional genomics is to understand the controlling mechanism of the expression of these genes and encode the knowledge into gene regulatory network (GRN). To achieve this, computational and statistical algorithms are especially needed.
Inference of GRN is a very challenging task for computational biologists because the degree of freedom of the parameters is redundant. Various computational approaches have been proposed for …

Computing For Knowledge Management: From Nonaka To Visualisation And Knowledge Maps, Helmut Huber
Dissertations
Management itself is not always clearly understood, however, the confusion can be sorted if the underlying theory is clearly distinguished from its implementations. There also may be a specific role for computing in Knowledge Management. It is suggested that Knowledge Management technologists seek a unique strategic position for Computing in Knowledge Management, for reasons of clarity and differentiation from Information Systems. The effective transfer of knowledge is one of the main themes or core competency in Knowledge Management. This is also one of the areas where Knowledge Management technologists may find the niche for a distinct and unique contribution the …
Lyapunov-Based Coordinated Control Of An Underactuated Unmanned Aerial Vehicle And Robot Manipulator, Dongbin Lee
Lyapunov-Based Coordinated Control Of An Underactuated Unmanned Aerial Vehicle And Robot Manipulator, Dongbin Lee
All Dissertations
This Ph.D. dissertation describes nonlinear tracking control results for a quadrotor helicopter unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) towards the ultimate goal of controlling a combined UAV plus robot manipulator system (UAVRM). The quadrotor UAV is a helicopter that has four independent rotors that provide vertical lift: these four independent forces are managed in order to directly provide lift, pitch, roll, and yaw of the vehicle. Horizontal translations result from pitch and roll actions, the system is underactuated in the sense that there are only four control inputs to move the six degree-of-freedom aircraft. There are exising dynamic models of the quadrotor …
Efficient Embedded Speech Recognition For Very Large Vocabulary Mandarin Car-Navigation Systems, Yanmin Qian, Jia Liu, Michael T. Johnson
Efficient Embedded Speech Recognition For Very Large Vocabulary Mandarin Car-Navigation Systems, Yanmin Qian, Jia Liu, Michael T. Johnson
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Automatic speech recognition (ASR) for a very large vocabulary of isolated words is a difficult task on a resource-limited embedded device. This paper presents a novel fast decoding algorithm for a Mandarin speech recognition system which can simultaneously process hundreds of thousands of items and maintain high recognition accuracy. The proposed algorithm constructs a semi-tree search network based on Mandarin pronunciation rules, to avoid duplicate syllable matching and save redundant memory. Based on a two-stage fixed-width beam-search baseline system, the algorithm employs a variable beam-width pruning strategy and a frame-synchronous word-level pruning strategy to significantly reduce recognition time. This algorithm …

Calculations based on a rigorous analytical model are carried out to optimize the width of the indium phosphide avalanche region in high-speed direct-detection avalanche photodiode-based optical receivers. The model includes the effects of intersymbol interference (ISI), tunneling current, avalanche noise, and its correlation with the stochastic avalanche duration, as well as dead space. A minimum receiver sensitivity of -28 dBm is predicted at an optimal width of 0.18 mum and an optimal gain of approximately 13, for a 10 Gb/s communication system, assuming a Johnson noise level of 629 noise electrons per bit. The interplay among the factors controlling the …

Quantum Computations Techniques For Gauging Reliability Of Interval And Fuzzy Data, Luc Longpre, Christian Servin, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In traditional interval computations, we assume that the interval data corresponds to guaranteed interval bounds, and that fuzzy estimates provided by experts are correct. In practice, measuring instruments are not 100% reliable, and experts are not 100% reliable, we may have estimates which are "way off", intervals which do not contain the actual values at all. Usually, we know the percentage of such outlier un-reliable measurements. However, it is desirable to check that the reliability of the actual data is indeed within the given percentage. The problem of checking (gauging) this reliability is, in general, NP-hard; in reasonable cases, there …

Square Root Of "Not": A Major Difference Between Fuzzy And Quantum Logics, Vladik Kreinovich, Ladislav J. Kohout, Eunjin Kim
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Many authors have mentioned the similarity between quantum logic and fuzzy logic. In this paper, we show that, in spite of this similarity, these logics are not identical. Specifically, we emphasize that while quantum logic has a special ``square root of not'' operation which is very useful in quantum computing, fuzzy logic lacks such an operation.
