Memristor Based Lookup Table - Novel Testing And Reconfiguration Techniques, Veeresh Anilkumar Hongal Jan 2011

Memristor Based Lookup Table - Novel Testing And Reconfiguration Techniques, Veeresh Anilkumar Hongal

Masters Theses

"Nanotechnology is soon predicted to replace the CMOS technology, as current CMOS lithographic techniques will become void for complex IC designs with smaller feature size, and are hence incapable of keeping up with Moore's law. The devices in nanotechnology are fabricated using bottom up self-assembly. Memristor is one promising nanotech device which can replace the transistor used as a switch or memory device as it is just half the size and uses only fraction of the energy. This work considers Memristor Look Up Table (MLUT) design, which is a building block for asynchronous FPGAs built with memristors. In spite of …

Optimized Testing And Logic Mapping Methodology For Caen-Based Nano-Circuits, Sambhav Kundaikar Jan 2011

Optimized Testing And Logic Mapping Methodology For Caen-Based Nano-Circuits, Sambhav Kundaikar

Masters Theses

"Nanotechnology has been shown to have the potential to replace the existing CMOS technology in the race to maintain the Moore's Law increases in IC complexity. This work considers the Chemically Assembled Electronic Nanotechnology (CAEN), which fabricates nanofabric using a low cost self-assembly and self-alignment chemical process and provides very high density. However, the main disadvantage of this technology is the inherently high defect rate that hinders the efforts to commercialize such systems. Existing testing and design techniques, for example for FPGAs, are ill suited since they typically assume vary low defect rates.

Accessible Rich Internet Applications: The Search Engine Challenge, Angela Kielthy Jan 2011

Accessible Rich Internet Applications: The Search Engine Challenge, Angela Kielthy

Conference papers

The perception that Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) and Accessible Rich Internet Applications (ARIAs) are inaccessible to search engines is perhaps one of the main factors that hinder their wider adoption by the web development community. Recent announcements that RIAs and ARIAs are becoming more search engine friendly is provoking web developers to look for further information and evidence that will support or refute these announcements.

This paper outlines research undertaken and tests performed to establish if RIAs and ARIAs developed using Adobe Flex are crawlable and indexable by the Google search engine by default.

The conclusion drawn from testing is …

Computer Simulation Of A Hollow-Fiber Bioreactor: Heparan Regulated Growth Factors-Receptors Binding And Dissociation Analysis, Changjiang Zhang Jan 2011

Computer Simulation Of A Hollow-Fiber Bioreactor: Heparan Regulated Growth Factors-Receptors Binding And Dissociation Analysis, Changjiang Zhang

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis demonstrates the use of numerical simulation in predicting the behavior of proteins in a flow environment.

A novel convection-diffusion-reaction computational model is first introduced to simulate fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) binding to its receptor (FGFR) on cell surfaces and regulated by heparan sulfate proteoglycan (HSPG) under flow in a bioreactor. The model includes three parts: (1) the flow of medium using incompressible Navier-Stokes equations; (2) the mass transport of FGF-2 using convection-diffusion equations; and (3) the cell surface binding using chemical kinetics. The model consists of a set of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) for flow and …

Collaborative And Distributed Algorithms For Localization In Wireless Sensor Networks Based On The Solution Of Spatially Constrained Local And Sub-Local Problems, Juan De Dios Cota

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In this research we present algorithms for the distributed and collaborative localization of nodes for applications in wireless sensor networks. The algorithms are distributed in the sense that each node can estimate its own position using only range information and position estimates from neighboring nodes. The algorithms aim at achieving good accuracy with low computational complexity and low energy consumption. We consider the full localization process consisting of an initialization stage followed by a refinement stage.

For initialization, we propose a \emph{bilateration} algorithm where each node uses a set of anchors and their respective ranges to solve a set of …

Algorithms For Training Large-Scale Linear Programming Support Vector Regression And Classification, Pablo Rivas Perea Jan 2011

Algorithms For Training Large-Scale Linear Programming Support Vector Regression And Classification, Pablo Rivas Perea

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The main contribution of this dissertation is the development of a method to train a Support Vector Regression (SVR) model for the large-scale case where the number of training samples supersedes the computational resources. The proposed scheme consists of posing the SVR problem entirely as a Linear Programming (LP) problem and on the development of a sequential optimization method based on variables decomposition, constraints decomposition, and the use of primal-dual interior point methods. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach has comparable performance with other SV-based classifiers. Particularly, experiments demonstrate that as the problem size increases, the sparser the solution …

Effects Of The Usage Of Parallel Hardware Architectures In The Simulation Of Artificial Neural Networks Training Process, Carlos Beas Jan 2011

Effects Of The Usage Of Parallel Hardware Architectures In The Simulation Of Artificial Neural Networks Training Process, Carlos Beas

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Long training times and non-ideal performance have been a big impediment in further continuing the use of Artificial Neural Networks for real world applications. Current research is currently focused on two areas of study that aim to address this problem. The first approach seeks to overcome large training times by devising faster learning algorithms where a set of interconnection weights for which the network produces negligible error takes a less amount of computation to find [Sun98]. The second approach aims to address the impediment by implementing existing training algorithms but on parallel hardware architectures.

While both approaches provide promising advances …

Autonomic Management Of Virtualized Resources In Cloud Computing, Jia Rao

Wayne State University Dissertations

The last five years have witnessed a rapid growth of cloud computing in business, governmental and educational IT deployment. The success of cloud services depends critically on the effective management of virtualized resources. A key requirement of cloud management is the ability to dynamically match resource allocations to actual demands, To this end, we aim to design and implement a cloud resource management mechanism that manages underlying complexity, automates resource provisioning and controls client-perceived quality of service (QoS) while still achieving resource efficiency.

The design of an automatic resource management centers on two questions: when to adjust resource allocations and …

Efficient Channel Allocation And Medium Access Organization Algorithms For Vehicular Networking, Zaydoun Yahya Rawashdeh

Wayne State University Dissertations

Due to the limited bandwidth available for Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), organizing the wireless channel access to efficiently use the bandwidth is one of the main challenges in VANET. In this dissertation, we focus on channel allocation and media access organization for Vehicle-to-Roadside Units (V2R) and Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communications. An efficient channel allocation algorithm for Roadside Unit (RSU) access is proposed. The goal of the algorithm is to increase system throughput by admitting more tasks (vehicles) and at the same time reduce the risk of the admitted tasks. The algorithm admits the new requests only when their requirements can be …

Measuring Uncertainty Of Protein Secondary Structure, Alan Eugene Herner

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation develops and demonstrates a method to measure the uncertainty of secondary structure of protein sequences using Shannon's information theory. This method is applied to a newly developed large dataset of chameleon sequences and to several protein hinges culled from the Hinge Atlas. The uncertainty of the central residue in each tripeptide is computed for each amino acid in a sequence using Cuff and Barton's CB513 as the reference set. It is shown that while secondary structure uncertainty is relatively high in chameleon regions [avg = 1.27 bits] it is relatively low in the regions 1-7 residues nearest a …

A Triangulation-Based Approach To Nonrigid Image Registration, Timothy R. Linden

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

A triangulation-based approach to nonrigid image registration is presented. This method builds upon control point projective registration methods. Control points for this method are located using the Harris point detector. An analysis is presented for this detector to show its properties. Projective registration is used as the basis for this non-rigid registration method. Details of the projective registration method used are presented. Nonrigid registration is used to spatially align images of a 3-D scene taken from different views. Projective registration approximates the scene geometry as a plane. This nonrigid approach subdivides the images into small corresponding triangles, to improve the …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the use of an artificial neural network (ANN), in particular a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), to perform function approximation on truth data representing a weapon engagement zone's (WEZ) maximum launch range. The WEZ of an air-to-air missile represents the boundaries and zones of effectiveness for a one-vs-one air-to-air combat engagement [13]. The intent is for the network to fuse table lookup and interpolation functionality into a physically compact and computationally efficient package, while improving approximation accuracy over conventional methods. Data was collected from simulated firings of a notional air-to-air missile model and used to train a two layer …

Large Scale Distributed Semantic N-Gram Language Model, Yuandong Jiang Jan 2011

Large Scale Distributed Semantic N-Gram Language Model, Yuandong Jiang

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Language model is a crucial component in statistical machine translation system. The basic language model is N-gram which predicts the next word based on previous N-1 words. It has been used in the state-of-the-art commercial machine translation systems over years. However, the N-gram model ignores the rich syntactic and semantic structure in natural languages. We propose a composite semantic N-gram language model which combines probabilistic latent semantic analysis model with N-gram as a generative model. We have implemented the proposed composite language model in a super-computer with thousand processors that is trained by 1.3 billion tokens corpus. Comparing with simple …

3-D Model Characterization And Identification From Intrinsic Landmarks, John L. Camp

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

A method to automatically characterize and identify 3-D range scans based on intrinsic landmarks is presented. Intrinsic landmarks represent locally unique, intrinsic properties of a scanned surface, regardless of scale or rotation. The number, location, and characteristics of landmarks are used to characterize the scanned models. This method contains a selection process to identify stable, intrinsic landmarks for range scans as well as the identification of those scans. The selection process requires no user interaction or surface assumptions. It uses the principal curvatures at the range points to select the landmarks. First, a large number of landmarks are generated by …

Formation Of Graphene Sheets Through Laser Exfoliation Of Highly Ordered Pyrolytic Graphite, Min Qian, Yun-Shen Zhou, Yang Gao, Jong Bok Park, Tao Feng, Su Mei Huang, Zhuo Sun, Lan Jiang, Yongfeng Lu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Freestanding two-dimensional (2D) few-layer graphene was formed through laser exfoliation of highly ordered pyrolytic graphite, using a pulsed neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser. Graphene sheets of several nanometers in thickness and micrometers in size were obtained. The laser exfoliation process was investigated at different laser fluences and distances between target and substrate. Three different phases, amorphous carbon, few-layer graphene sheets, and thin graphite films, were obtained as the laser fluence increased. This study reveals an existing route of forming freestanding 2D nanostructures through laser exfoliation.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

The free-charge carrier mobility, sheet density, and effective mass of a two-dimensional electron gas are exemplarily determined in the spectral range from 640 GHz to 1 THz in a AlGaN/GaN heterostructure using the optical-Hall effect at room temperature. Complementary midinfrared spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements are performed for analysis of heterostructure constituents layer thickness, phonon mode, and free-charge carrier parameters. The electron effective mass is determined to be (0.22 ± 0.04)m0. The high-frequency sheet density and carrier mobility parameters are in good agreement with results from dc electrical Hall effect measurements, indicative for frequency-independent carrier scattering mechanisms of the …

Self-Encoded Spread Spectrum For Multirate Multimedia Communication In Multipath Channel, Liang Chi, Won Mee Jang, Lim Nguyen

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)

In this paper, we propose the self-encoded spread spectrum (SESS) with multirate multimedia communication in multipath channel. In multirate multimedia SESS system, each application has their own transmission bit rate. The signal is transmitted through multipath channels each with different channel gain and time delay. We view the main path as the signal resource and other paths as interference. At the receiver side, decorrelation scheme is employed for the main path combined signal not only to reduce the crosstalk between different applications, but also to provide a better estimation for the despreading sequence in the main path. Interference cancellation(IC) in …

Low-Complexity Image Coder/Decoder With An Approaching-Entropy Quad-Tree Search Code For Embedded Computing Platforms, Tao Ma, Pradhumna Shrestha, Michael Hempel, Dongming Peng, Hamid Sharif

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)

In this paper, we propose a fast, simple and efficient image codec applicable for embedded processing systems. Among the existing image coding methods, wavelet quad-tree is a foundation leading to an efficient structure to encode images. By searching significant coefficients along quad-trees, an embedded efficient code can be obtained. In this work, we exploit hierarchical relations of the quad-tree structure in terms of searching entropy and present a quad-tree searching model that is very close to the searching entropy. By applying this model, our codec surpasses SPIHT [1] by 0.2-0.4 db over wide code rates, and its performance is comparable …
