In many real life situations, a text consists of related parts; so, to understand a part, we need to first understand some (or all) preceding parts: e.g., to understand Chapter 3, we first need to understand Chapters 1 and 2. In many cases, this dependence is described by a partial order. For this case, O.~Prosorov proposed a natural description of the dependence structure as a topology (satisfying the separation axiom T0).
In some practical situations, dependence is more general than partial order: e.g., to understand Chapter 3, we may need to understand either Chapter 1 or Chapter 2, …

From Numerical Probabilities To Linguistic Probabilities: A Theoretical Justification Of Empirical Granules Used In Risk Management, Beverly Rivera, Francisco Zapata, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many risk management situations, instead of the exact probability values, specialists use a granule to which this probability belongs. Specifically, they use five granules, corresponding to thresholds 10%, 40%, 60%, and 90%. In this paper, we provide an explanation for such non-uniform granulation.
Homotopy Techniques In Solving Systems Of Nonlinear Equations: A Theoretical Justification Of Convex Combinations, Nicholas Sun
Homotopy Techniques In Solving Systems Of Nonlinear Equations: A Theoretical Justification Of Convex Combinations, Nicholas Sun
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
One of the techniques for solving systems of non-linear equations F1(x1,...,xn) = 0, ..., Fn(x1,...,xn) = 0, (F(x) = 0 in vector notations) is a homotopy method, when we start with a solution of a simplified (and thus easier-to-solve) approximate system Gi(x1,...,xn) = 0, and then gradually adjust this solution by solving intermediate systems of equation Hi(x1,...,xn) = 0 for an appropriate "transition" function H(x) = f(λ,F(x),G(x)). The success of this method depends on the …

Log-Periodic Power Law As A Predictor Of Catastrophic Events: A New Mathematical Justification, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen, Songsak Sriboonchitta
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
To decrease the damage caused by meteorological disasters, it is important to be able to predict these disasters as accurately as possible. One of the most promising ways of achieving such a prediction comes from the observation that in the vicinity of a catastrophic event, many parameters exhibit log-periodic power behavior, with oscillations of increasing frequency. By fitting the corresponding formula to the observations, it is often possible to predict the catastrophic event. Such successful predictions were made in many application areas ranging from ruptures of fuel tanks to earthquakes to stock market disruptions. The fact that similar formulas can …
Hil Simulation For Smartphone-Guided Autonomous Systems, Matthew Gerdt
Hil Simulation For Smartphone-Guided Autonomous Systems, Matthew Gerdt
Computer Engineering
My bachelor thesis focuses on implementing a Hardware in the Loop (HIL) simulation for a quadcopter controlled by an Android smartphone. The HIL simulation will be able to test the software running on an Android smartphone by simulating a virtual quadcopter on the computer without the need to use an actual quadcopter. To accomplish this I will have to modify my team’s existing simulation to allow for the communication between the smartphone and simulation. At the completion of my work the HIL simulation will allow the testing of different aspects of the Android application, such as the tracking of an …
A Load-Based Approach To Forming A Connected Dominating Set For An Ad Hoc Network, Raihan Hazarika
A Load-Based Approach To Forming A Connected Dominating Set For An Ad Hoc Network, Raihan Hazarika
All Theses
Efficient routing in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) is highly desired and connected dominating sets (CDS) have been gaining significant popularity in this regard. The CDS based approach reduces the search for a minimum cost path between a pair of source and destination terminals to the set of terminals forming the backbone network. Researchers over the years have developed numerous distributed and localized algorithms for constructing CDSs which minimize the number of terminals forming the backbone or which provide multiple node-disjoint paths between each pair of terminals. However none of this research focuses on minimizing the load at the bottleneck …

Testing The Forensic Soundness Of Forensic Examination Environments On Bootable Media, Ahmed F.A.L. Mohamed, Andrew Marrington, Farkhund Iqbal, Ibrahim Baggili
Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
In this work we experimentally examine the forensic soundness of the use of forensic bootable CD/DVDs as forensic examination environments. Several Linux distributions with bootable CD/DVDs which are marketed as forensic examination environments are used to perform a forensic analysis of a captured computer system. Before and after the bootable CD/DVD examination, the computer system's hard disk is removed and a forensic image acquired by a second system using a hardware write blocker. The images acquired before and after the bootable CD/DVD examination are hashed and the hash values compared. Where the hash values are inconsistent, a differential analysis is …

Video game consoles can no longer be viewed as just gaming consoles but rather as full multimedia machines, capable of desktop computer-like performance. The past has shown that game consoles have been used in criminal activities such as extortion, identity theft, and child pornography, but with their ever-increasing capabilities, the likelihood of the expansion of criminal activities conducted on or over the consoles increases. This research aimed to take the initial step of understanding the Xbox One, the most powerful Microsoft console to date. We report the outcome of conducting a forensic examination of the Xbox One, and we provide …
Realization Of Negative Index In Second-Order Dispersive Metamaterials Using Standard Dispersion Models For Electromagnetic Parameters, Tarig A. Algadey, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee
Realization Of Negative Index In Second-Order Dispersive Metamaterials Using Standard Dispersion Models For Electromagnetic Parameters, Tarig A. Algadey, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
In recent work, electromagnetic propagation velocities for plane waves in dispersive metamaterials were calculated assuming frequency dispersion up to the second order. The three velocities were expressed in terms of dispersive coefficients under certain simplifying constraints. Frequency domains were found to exist around resonances where group and phase velocities are in opposition, implying possible negative index behavior.
In this paper, we incorporate in the derived equations physical models (including Debye, Lorentz and Condon) for material dispersion in permittivity, permeability and chirality in order to further examine the consequences of second-order dispersion leading to negative index for practical cases, and also …
Modeling Of Power Spectral Density Of Modified Von Karman Atmospheric Phase Turbulence And Acousto-Optic Chaos Using Scattered Intensity Profiles Over Discrete Time Intervals, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Fathi H.A. Mohamed
Mohamed
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
In recent research, propagation of plane electromagnetic (EM) waves through a turbulent medium with modified von Karman phase characteristics was modeled and numerically simulated using transverse planar apertures representing narrow phase turbulence along the propagation path.
The case for extended turbulence was also studied by repeating the planar phase screens multiple times over the propagation path and incorporating diffractive effects via a split-step algorithm. The goal of the research reported here is to examine two random phenomena: (a) atmospheric turbulence due to von Karman-type phase fluctuations, and (b) chaos generated in an acousto-optic (A-O) Bragg cell under hybrid feedback. The …

Reputation Computation In Social Networks And Its Applications, Jooyoung Lee
Reputation Computation In Social Networks And Its Applications, Jooyoung Lee
Dissertations - ALL
This thesis focuses on a quantification of reputation and presents models which compute reputation within networked environments. Reputation manifests past behaviors of users and helps others to predict behaviors of users and therefore reduce risks in future interactions. There are two approaches in computing reputation on networks- namely, the macro-level approach and the micro-level approach. A macro-level assumes that there exists a computing entity outside of a given network who can observe the entire network including degree distributions and relationships among nodes. In a micro-level approach, the entity is one of the nodes in a network and therefore can only …

A Comparative Study Of Underwater Robot Path Planning Algorithms For Adaptive Sampling In A Network Of Sensors, Sreeja Banerjee
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Monitoring lakes, rivers, and oceans is critical to improving our understanding of complex large-scale ecosystems. We introduce a method of underwater monitoring using semi-mobile underwater sensor networks and mobile underwater robots in this thesis. The underwater robots can move freely in all dimension while the sensor nodes are anchored to the bottom of the water column and can move only up and down along the depth of the water column. We develop three different algorithms to optimize the path of the underwater robot and the positions of the sensors to improve the overall quality of sensing of an area of …
Expected Cost Penalty Due To Deviation From Security-Constrained Dispatch, Veravut Dheraprasart
Expected Cost Penalty Due To Deviation From Security-Constrained Dispatch, Veravut Dheraprasart
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis introduces and evaluates a new index called ”Expected Cost Penalty Due to Deviation From Security Constrained Dispatch” (ECP_SCD) for interconnected power systems planning. This index represents the optimal operating cost of the system taking into account the uncertainties such as random failure of generating units, transformer, and transmission lines in interconnected power systems. The significance of this index is that it represents the minimum operating cost for a contingency event and can be used for contingency screening (ranking). This index also indicates the impact of equipment reliability on the average cost penalty of all contingency events. Moreover, this …

Numerical Investigation Of The Nonlinear Dynamics Of A Hybrid Acousto-Optic Bragg Cell With A Variable Feedback Gain, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Hao Zhou
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Since around 1979, the operation of an acousto-optic Bragg cell under positive first-order feedback via amplification and delay in the loop has been studied extensively by several groups [1-3]. In recent work, the analysis of the nonlinear dynamics (NLD) of the system was extended to include bistable maps and Lyapunov exponents, and application of the chaos for signal encryption and decryption for uniform plane waves. The present work originated with the problem of a variable photodetector aperture opening relative to the first-order light. This potentially complex problem is simplified by assuming instead a variable feedback gain ( β ~ (t)), …

Ocean acoustics is the study of sound in the oceans. Electromagnetic waves attenuate rapidly in the water medium. Sound is the best means to transmit information underwater. Computational numerical simulations play an important role in ocean acoustics. Simulations of acoustic propagation in the oceans are challenging due to the complexities involved in the ocean environment. Different methods have been developed to simulate underwater sound propagation. The Parabolic-Equation (PE) method is the best choice in several ocean acoustic problems. In shallow water acoustic experiments, sound loses some of its energy when it interacts with the bottom. An equivalent fluid technique was …

A Novel Nmf-Based Dwi Cad Framework For Prostate Cancer., Patrick Mcclure
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, a computer aided diagnostic (CAD) framework for detecting prostate cancer in DWI data is proposed. The proposed CAD method consists of two frameworks that use nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) to learn meaningful features from sets of high-dimensional data. The first technique, is a three dimensional (3D) level-set DWI prostate segmentation algorithm guided by a novel probabilistic speed function. This speed function is driven by the features learned by NMF from 3D appearance, shape, and spatial data. The second technique, is a probabilistic classifier that seeks to label a prostate segmented from DWI data as either alignat, contain …

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) denote a significant growing public health concern. Currently, one in 68 children has been diagnosed with ASDs in the United States, and most children are diagnosed after the age of four, despite the fact that ASDs can be identified as early as age two. The ultimate goal of this thesis is to develop a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for the accurate and early diagnosis of ASDs using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). This CAD system consists of three main steps. First, the brain tissues are segmented based on three image descriptors: a visual appearance model that has …
Context Dependent Spectral Unmixing., Hamdi Jenzri
Context Dependent Spectral Unmixing., Hamdi Jenzri
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A hyperspectral unmixing algorithm that finds multiple sets of endmembers is proposed. The algorithm, called Context Dependent Spectral Unmixing (CDSU), is a local approach that adapts the unmixing to different regions of the spectral space. It is based on a novel function that combines context identification and unmixing. This joint objective function models contexts as compact clusters and uses the linear mixing model as the basis for unmixing. Several variations of the CDSU, that provide additional desirable features, are also proposed. First, the Context Dependent Spectral unmixing using the Mahalanobis Distance (CDSUM) offers the advantage of identifying non-spherical clusters in …

With the advent of parallel computing, a number of hardware architectures have become available for data parallel applications. Every architecture is unique with respect to characteristics such as floating point operations per second, memory bandwidth and synchronization costs. Data parallel applications possess inherent parallelism that needs to be studied and the hardware that can best exploit this parallelism can be identified and selected for large-scale implementation. The application that I have considered for my thesis is - numerical solution of shallow water wave equations using finite difference method. These equations are a set of partial differential equations that model the …
Towards Efficient File Sharing And Packet Routing In Mobile Opportunistic Networks, Kang Chen
Towards Efficient File Sharing And Packet Routing In Mobile Opportunistic Networks, Kang Chen
All Dissertations
With the increasing popularity of portable digital devices (e.g., smartphones, laptops, and tablets), mobile opportunistic networks (MONs) [40, 90] consisting of portable devices have attracted much attention recently. MONs are also known as pocket switched networks (PSNs) [52]. MONs can be regarded as a special form of mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) [7] or delay tolerant networks (DTNs) [35, 56]. In such networks, mobile nodes (devices) move continuously and meet opportunistically. Two mobile nodes can communicate with each other only when they are within the communication range of each other in a peer-to-peer (P2P) manner (i.e., without the need of …
Stereo Vision System Module For Low-Cost Fpgas For Autonomous Mobile Robots, Connor Citron
Stereo Vision System Module For Low-Cost Fpgas For Autonomous Mobile Robots, Connor Citron
Master's Theses
Stereo vision uses two adjacent cameras to create a 3D image of the world. A depth map can be created by comparing the offset of the corresponding pixels from the two cameras. However, for real-time stereo vision, the image data needs to be processed at a reasonable frame rate. Real-time stereo vision allows for mobile robots to more easily navigate terrain and interact with objects by providing both the images from the cameras and the depth of the objects. Fortunately, the image processing can be parallelized in order to increase the processing speed. Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are highly parallelizable …

Various image fusion techniques have been studied to meet the requirements of different applications such as concealed weapon detection, remote sensing, urban mapping, surveillance and medical imaging. Combining two or more images of the same scene or object produces a better application-wise visible image. The conventional wavelet transform (WT) has been widely used in the field of image fusion due to its advantages, including multi-scale framework and capability of isolating discontinuities at object edges. However, the contourlet transform (CT) has been recently adopted and applied to the image fusion process to overcome the drawbacks of WT with its own advantages. …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
According to Traveler opinion and perception survey of 2005, 107.4 million Americans use walking as regular mode of travel, which amounts to 51% of American population. In 2009, 4092 pedestrian fatalities have been reported nationwide with a fatality rate of 1.33 which totals 59,000 crashes. Also, pedestrians are over represented in crash data by accounting more than 12% of fatalities but on 10.9% of trips. This makes a perfect case for understanding the causes behind such statistics, calling for a continuous research on pedestrians walking behavior and their interactions with surroundings.
Current research in pedestrian simulation focuses on surveys and …
