Wau: Location-Based Photo-Sharing And Friend-Finding Android Application, Tam P. Nguyen
Computer Engineering
Wau (Where are u?) is a location-based photo-sharing and friend-finding Android application. The basic concept of my app is to help people avoid the hassle of having to call/text their friends in order to know where they are. The ability to simply tap on a name and visually see their location in reference to your own would be a huge convenience. Another neat feature is that it allows users to take and upload pictures wherever they are, and the only way for anyone to see the picture is to be within the same vicinity that it was taken. I imagine …

Oversubscribing Inotify On Embedded Platforms, Donald Percivalle, Scott Vanderlind
Oversubscribing Inotify On Embedded Platforms, Donald Percivalle, Scott Vanderlind
Computer Engineering
For most computers running the popular Linux operating system, the inte- grated kernel component inotify provides adequate functionality for monitor- ing changes to files present on the filesystem. However, for certain embedded platforms where resources are very limited and filesystems are very populated (like network attached storage (NAS) devices), inotify may not have enough resources to provide watchers for every file. This results in applications missing change notifications for files they have watched. This paper explores methods for using inotify most effectively on embedded systems by leveraging more la- tent storage. Benefits of this include a reduction in dropped notifications …

A Modular Approach For Key-Frame Selection In Wide Area Surveillance Video Analysis, Almabrok Essa, Paheding Sidike, Vijayan K. Asari
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper presents an efficient preprocessing algorithm for big data analysis. Our proposed key-frame selection method utilizes the statistical differences among subsequent frames to automatically select only the frames that contain the desired contextual information and discard the rest of the insignificant frames.
We anticipate that such key frame selection technique will have significant impact on wide area surveillance applications such as automatic object detection and recognition in aerial imagery. Three real-world datasets are used for evaluation and testing and the observed results are encouraging.
Rest Api To Access And Manage Geospatial Pipeline Integrity Data, Alexandra Michelle Francis
Rest Api To Access And Manage Geospatial Pipeline Integrity Data, Alexandra Michelle Francis
Master's Theses
Today’s economy and infrastructure is dependent on raw natural resources, like crude oil and natural gases, that are optimally transported through a net- work of hundreds of thousands of miles of pipelines throughout America[28]. A damaged pipe can negatively a↵ect thousands of homes and businesses so it is vital that they are monitored and quickly repaired[1]. Ideally, pipeline operators are able to detect damages before they occur, but ensuring the in- tegrity of the vast amount of pipes is unrealistic and would take an impractical amount of time and manpower[1].
Natural disasters, like earthquakes, as well as construction are just …
Toward The Systematization Of Active Authentication Research, Daniel Fleming Gerrity
Toward The Systematization Of Active Authentication Research, Daniel Fleming Gerrity
Master's Theses
Authentication is the vital link between your real self and your digital self. As our digital selves become ever more powerful, the price of failing authentication grows. The most common authentication protocols are static data and employed only once at login. This allows for authentication to be spoofed just once to gain access to an entire user session. Behaviometric protocols continuously consume a user’s behavior as a token of authentication and can be applied throughout a session, thereby eliminating a fixed token to spoof. Research into these protocols as viable forms of authentication is relatively recent and is being conducted …

Using Mobile Cameras To Measure Dye Concentration In Bio-Chemistry Experiments, Jackie Fong, Andrew Lau, Anna Katrina Velasquez
Computer Engineering
Many cutting edge chemistry experiments for high throughput assays require measuring colored outputs from specially prepared samples. Absorbance from these samples is usually measured with a specialized piece of equipment that adds to the expense, time, and complexity of obtaining experimental results. To make these experiments more accessible, we looked at developing software to allow cell phones or consumer grade USB cameras to measure these experiments and quantify the intensity of the output.
What we have compiled thus far is research regarding several different color spaces and attempted analysis on the many channels of color spaces such as RGB, HSV, …

SSL currently uses certificates signed by Certificate Authorities (CAs) to authenticate connections. e.g. Google will pay a CA to sign a certificate for them, so that they can prove that they're not someone pretending to be Google. Unfortunately, this system has had multiple problems, and many believe that an alternative needs to be found.
One of the ideas for alternatives is using multiple "network perspectives" to authenticate a server. The idea behind this is that, though playing man-in-the-middle (MITM) with one connection is easy, it should be difficult for an adversary to do so with many connections, especially if they …

Performance Analysis Of Distance Relay On Shunt/Series Facts-Compensated Transmission Line, Ahmed Kareem Lafta Al-Behadili
Performance Analysis Of Distance Relay On Shunt/Series Facts-Compensated Transmission Line, Ahmed Kareem Lafta Al-Behadili
Masters Theses
Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) are increasingly being used to enhance the efficiency and reliability of power system networks. FACTS devices can influence the performance of existing protective system components (specifically distance relays) due to the fact that FACTS change power system quantities such as line impedances, voltages, and currents. Distance relay may mal-operate when FACTS devices are connected since they cause some of the tripping characteristics to change. This thesis investigates the impact on distance relay performance due to compensations using two types of FACTS controllers: Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) and Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC). Analytical study …
