A Time-Efficient Strategy For Relay Selection And Link Scheduling In Wireless Communication Networks, Chenxi Qiu Dec 2015

A Time-Efficient Strategy For Relay Selection And Link Scheduling In Wireless Communication Networks, Chenxi Qiu

All Dissertations

Despite the unprecedented success and proliferation of wireless communication, sustainable reliability and stability among wireless users are still considered important issues in the underlying link protocols. Existing link-layer protocols, like ARQ [44] or HARQ [57,67] approaches are designed to achieve this goal by discarding a corrupted packet at the receiver and performing one or more retransmissions until the packet is successfully decoded or a maximum number of retransmission attempts is reached. These strategies suffer from degradation of throughput and overall system instability since packets need to be en/decode in every hop, leading to high burden for relay nodes especially when …

The Bounded Edge Coloring Problem And Offline Crossbar Scheduling, Jonathan Turner Dec 2015

The Bounded Edge Coloring Problem And Offline Crossbar Scheduling, Jonathan Turner

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper introduces a variant of the classical edge coloring problem in graphs that can be applied to an offline scheduling problem for crossbar switches. We show that the problem is NP-complete, develop three lower bounds bounds on the optimal solution value and evaluate the performance of several approximation algorithms, both analytically and experimentally. We show how to approximate an optimal solution with a worst-case performance ratio of 3/2 and our experimental results demonstrate that the best algorithms produce results that very closely track a lower bound.

Learning Query And Image Similarities With Ranking Canonical Correlation Analysis, Ting Yao, Tao Mei, Chong-Wah Ngo Dec 2015

Learning Query And Image Similarities With Ranking Canonical Correlation Analysis, Ting Yao, Tao Mei, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

One of the fundamental problems in image search is to learn the ranking functions, i.e., similarity between the query and image. The research on this topic has evolved through two paradigms: feature-based vector model and image ranker learning. The former relies on the image surrounding texts, while the latter learns a ranker based on human labeled query-image pairs. Each of the paradigms has its own limitation. The vector model is sensitive to the quality of text descriptions, and the learning paradigm is difficult to be scaled up as human labeling is always too expensive to obtain. We demonstrate in this …

Computational Capacity And Energy Consumption Of Complex Resistive Switch Networks, Jens Bürger, Alireza Goudarzi, Darko Stefanovic, Christof Teuscher Dec 2015

Computational Capacity And Energy Consumption Of Complex Resistive Switch Networks, Jens Bürger, Alireza Goudarzi, Darko Stefanovic, Christof Teuscher

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Resistive switches are a class of emerging nanoelectronics devices that exhibit a wide variety of switching characteristics closely resembling behaviors of biological synapses. Assembled into random networks, such resistive switches produce emerging behaviors far more complex than that of individual devices. This was previously demonstrated in simulations that exploit information processing within these random networks to solve tasks that require nonlinear computation as well as memory. Physical assemblies of such networks manifest complex spatial structures and basic processing capabilities often related to biologically-inspired computing. We model and simulate random resistive switch networks and analyze their computational capacities. We provide a …

Adaptive Scaling Of Cluster Boundaries For Large-Scale Social Media Data Clustering, Lei Meng, Ah-Hwee Tan, Donald C. Wunsch

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The large scale and complex nature of social media data raises the need to scale clustering techniques to big data and make them capable of automatically identifying data clusters with few empirical settings. In this paper, we present our investigation and three algorithms based on the fuzzy adaptive resonance theory (Fuzzy ART) that have linear computational complexity, use a single parameter, i.e., the vigilance parameter to identify data clusters, and are robust to modest parameter settings. The contribution of this paper lies in two aspects. First, we theoretically demonstrate how complement coding, commonly known as a normalization method, changes the …

Bep: Bit Error Pattern Measurement And Analysis In Ieee 802.11, Jiayue Li, Zimu Zhou, Chen Zhang, Liang Yin, Lionel M. Ni

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The IEEE 802.11 is a set of Media Access Control (MAC) and Physical Layer (PHY) specifications which concern the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) service. However, most IEEE 802.11 WLAN services are easily affected by external elements, such as the homogeneous interference caused by the high-density deployment of IEEE 802.11 devices, the attenuation effect caused by complicated indoor obstacles, and the heterogeneous interference caused by other devices which operate out of unlicensed 2.4GHz ISM bands. In this paper, we first present a method to capture IEEE 802.11n Bit Error Patterns (BEP) under the network effect such as the homogeneous interference …

Maximum Priority Matchings, Jonathan Turner Nov 2015

Maximum Priority Matchings, Jonathan Turner

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Let G=(V,E) be an undirected graph with n vertices and m edges, in which each vertex u is assigned an integer priority in [1,n], with 1 being the ``highest'' priority. Let M be a matching of G. We define the priority score of M to be an n-ary integer in which the i-th most-significant digit is the number of vertices with priority i that are incident to an edge in M. We describe a variation of the augmenting path method (Edmonds' algorithm) that finds a matching with maximum priority score in O(mn) time.

Synthesis Techniques For Sub-Threshold Leakage And Nbti Optimization In Digital Vlsi Systems, Shilpa Pendyala Nov 2015

Synthesis Techniques For Sub-Threshold Leakage And Nbti Optimization In Digital Vlsi Systems, Shilpa Pendyala

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The rising power demands and cost motivates us to explore low power solutions in electronics. In nanometer Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) processes with low threshold voltages and thin gate oxides, subthreshold leakage power dominates total power of a circuit. As technology scales, Negative Bias Temperature Instability (NBTI) emerged as a major limiting reliability mechanism. It causes a threshold voltage shift which, over time, results in circuit performance degradation. Hence, leakage power and NBTI degradation are two key challenges in deep sub micron regime.

In this dissertation, interval arithmetic based interval propagation technique is introduced as an effective leakage optimization …

Integration Of A Stereo Vision System And Gps Data For Recording The Position Of Feature Points In A Fixed World Coordinate System, S.D. Mcloughlin, C. O’Rourke, J. Mcdonald, C.E. Markham

The ITB Journal

This paper describes a laboratory system for recovering the global coordinates of feature points obtained from a moving camera. The prototype includes a stereo vision system combined with an overhead camera, which mimics a GPS receiver. The stereo vision system provides three dimensional feature point coordinates relative to the position of the cameras and the overhead camera provides three-dimensional coordinates of the camera in a “global” coordinate system. The fusion of these data provides three-dimensional feature point coordinates in a fixed origin global coordinate system.

Hardware/Software Codesign, Richard Gallery Nov 2015

Hardware/Software Codesign, Richard Gallery

The ITB Journal

The current state of the art technology in integrated circuits allows the incorporation of multiple processor cores and memory arrays, in addition to application specific hardware, on a single substrate. As silicon technology has become more advanced, allowing the implementation of more complex designs, systems have begun to incorporate considerable amounts of embedded software [3]. Thus it becomes increasingly necessary for the system designers to have knowledge on both hardware and software to make efficient design tradeoffs. This is where hardware/software codesign comes into existence.

Hardware And Software Codesign For Multimedia Capable Portable Devices Using Systemc, Richard Gallery, Deepesh Shakya Nov 2015

Hardware And Software Codesign For Multimedia Capable Portable Devices Using Systemc, Richard Gallery, Deepesh Shakya

The ITB Journal

Multimedia capable portable devices such as 3G phones will host a variety of new applications. Although the underlying push for new applications in such devices is driven by the increase in bandwidth offered by 3G, it is clear that many of the “new” applications will require the provision of new and powerful graphics/video technology within the mobile device itself. Within a computing device, high bandwidth and computational cost are associated with anything but the simplest of graphics, and as a result the graphics subsystem is generally one of the most critical elements of a system, requiring particular attention in the …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A mobile manipulator is a robotic arm mounted on a robotic mobile platform. In such a system, the degrees of freedom of the mobile platform are combined with that of the manipulator. As a result, the workspace of the manipulator is substantially extended. A mobile manipulator has two trajectories: the end-effector trajectory and the mobile platform trajectory. Typically, the mobile platform trajectory is not defined and is determined through inverse kinematics. But in some applications it is important to follow a specified mobile platform trajectory. The main focus of this work is to determine the inverse kinematics of a mobile …
