File systems are fundamental for computers and devices with data storage units. They allow operating systems to understand and organize streams of bytes and obtain readable files from them. There are numerous file systems available in the industry, all with their own unique features. Understanding how these file systems work is essential for computer science students, but their complex nature can be difficult and challenging to grasp, especially for students at the beginning of their career. The Zion File System Simulator was designed with this in mind. Zion is a teaching and experimenting tool, in the form of a small …

Graphene Valley, Daniel Applebaum Feb 2016

Graphene Valley, Daniel Applebaum

Missouri S&T’s Peer to Peer

Silicon Valley in northern California is the proverbial hub of technological innovation and industry. Its namesake derives from the fact that silicon acts as the main component in modern electronics; however, a new material called graphene is challenging its role. In its early years of research, it was evident that the qualities of graphene far exceeded expectations. Industries are going mad trying to come up with applications and consumer products. While headway has been made, it is hard to say how long it will take to see products advertising their new graphene capabilities. Before touch screens or graphene-based microprocessors can …

Improved Sensitivity Mems Cantilever Sensor For Terahertz Photoacoustic Spectroscopy, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Ivan R. Medvedev, Douglas T. Petkie

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) cantilever sensor was designed, modeled and fabricated to measure the terahertz (THz) radiation induced photoacoustic (PA) response of gases under low vacuum conditions. This work vastly improves cantilever sensitivity over previous efforts, by reducing internal beam stresses, minimizing out of plane beam curvature and optimizing beam damping. In addition, fabrication yield was improved by approximately 50% by filleting the cantilever’s anchor and free end to help reduce high stress areas that occurred during device fabrication and processing. All of the cantilever sensors were fabricated using silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers and tested in a custom …

Detection Of Malicious Content In Json Structured Data Using Multiple Concurrent Anomaly Detection Methods, Brett N. Miller Feb 2016

Detection Of Malicious Content In Json Structured Data Using Multiple Concurrent Anomaly Detection Methods, Brett N. Miller

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Web applications and Web services often use a data format known as JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) to exchange information. An attacker can tamper with these exchanges to cause the Web service or application to malfunction in a way that is detrimental to the interests of the owners of the Web application or service. Many such applications or services are involved in processes critical to safety or are vital to business interests. Unfortunately, such critical applications cannot always be relied upon to validate the data sent to them. This creates a need for protection external to the applications themselves. This need …

Human Activity Prediction By Mapping Grouplets To Recurrent Self-Organizing Map, Qianru Sun, Hong Liu, Mengyuan Liu, Tianwei Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Human activity prediction is defined as inferring the high-level activity category with the observation of only a few action units. It is very meaningful for time-critical applications such as emergency surveillance. For efficient prediction, we represent the ongoing human activity by using body part movements and taking full advantage of inherent sequentiality, then find the best matching activity template by a proper aligning measurement. In streaming videos, dense spatio-temporal interest points (STIPs) are first extracted as low-level descriptors for their high detection efficiency. Then, sparse grouplets, i.e., clustered point groups, are located to represent body part movements, for which we propose …

A Localization Method For Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks Based On Mobility Prediction And Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithms, Ying Zhang, Jixing Liang, Shengming Jiang, Wei Chen

Computer Science Faculty Research

Due to their special environment, Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs) are usually deployed over a large sea area and the nodes are usually floating. This results in a lower beacon node distribution density, a longer time for localization, and more energy consumption. Currently most of the localization algorithms in this field do not pay enough consideration on the mobility of the nodes. In this paper, by analyzing the mobility patterns of water near the seashore, a localization method for UWSNs based on a Mobility Prediction and a Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm (MP-PSO) is proposed. In this method, the range-based PSO …

Incorporating Priors For Medical Image Segmentation Using A Genetic Algorithm, Payel Ghosh, Melanie Mitchell, James A. Tanyi, Arthur Y. Hung

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Medical image segmentation is typically performed manually by a physician to delineate gross tumor volumes for treatment planning and diagnosis. Manual segmentation is performed by medical experts using prior knowledge of organ shapes and locations but is prone to reader subjectivity and inconsistency. Automating the process is challenging due to poor tissue contrast and ill-defined organ/tissue boundaries in medical images. This paper presents a genetic algorithm for combining representations of learned information such as known shapes, regional properties and relative position of objects into a single framework to perform automated three-dimensional segmentation. The algorithm has been tested for prostate segmentation …

Detecting Faults In Turbine Generators, Wei Qiao, Xiang Gong Feb 2016

Detecting Faults In Turbine Generators, Wei Qiao, Xiang Gong

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Turbine generator faults can be detected by receiving a current signal from the turbine generator, and synchronously sampling the current signal to obtain a set of current signal samples that are evenly spaced in the phase domain, in which phase differences between adjacent current signal samples in the set of current signal samples are substantially the same. The process includes generating a frequency spectrum of the current signal samples, identifying one or more excitations in the frequency spectrum, and detecting a fault in the turbine generator based on the one or more excitations in the frequency spectrum.

Design And Performance Evaluation Of A Prototype Mrf-Based Haptic Interface For Medical Applications, Mehrdad Kermani Ph.D., P.Eng., Nima Najmaei, Ali Asadian, Rajni Patel

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

This paper describes the construction and stability and transparency evaluation of a prototype two degrees-of-freedom (DoF) haptic interface, which takes ad-vantage of magneto-rheological fluid (MRF)-based clutches for actuation. These small-scale clutches were designed in our lab, and their evaluation were reported previously [1],[2]. MRF-based actuators exhibit superior characteristics, which can significantly contribute to transparency and stability of haptic devices. Based on these actuators, a distributed antagonistic configuration is used to develop the2-DoF haptic interface. This device is incorporated in a master–slave teleoperation setup intended for medical per-cutaneous interventions and soft-tissue palpation. Preliminary studies on the stability and transparency of the haptic …

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Archaeological projects increasingly collect airborne LiDAR data to use as a remote sensing tool for survey and analysis. Publication possibilities for LiDAR datasets, however, are limited due to the large size and often proprietary nature of the data. Fortunately, web-based, geographic information systems (WebGIS) that can securely manage temporal and spatial data hold great promise as virtual research environments for working with and publishing LiDAR data. To test this and to obtain new data for archaeological research, in 2013, the MayaArch3D Project (www.mayaarch3d.org) collected LiDAR data for the archaeological site of Copan, Honduras. Results include: 1) more accurate archaeological maps, …

A Real-Time Information Based Demand-Side Management System In Smart Grid, Feng Ye, Yi Qian, Rose Qingyang Hu Feb 2016

A Real-Time Information Based Demand-Side Management System In Smart Grid, Feng Ye, Yi Qian, Rose Qingyang Hu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we study a real-time information based demand-side management (DSM) system with advanced communication networks in smart grid. DSM can smooth peak-to-average ratio (PAR) of power usage in the grid, which in turn reduces the waste of fuel and the emission of greenhouse gas. We first target to minimize PAR with a centralized scheme. To motivate power suppliers, we further propose another centralized scheme targeting minimum power generation cost. However, customers may not be motivated by a centralized scheme since such a scheme requires total control and privacy from them. A centralized scheme also requires too much real-time …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Compact sensor systems for on-site monitoring of groundwater for trace organic compounds in the liquid phase are currently under development in our laboratories. Potential challenges include sensor baseline drift and the presence of outliers in the data, along with difficulties extracting the contribution of individual BTEX compound (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes) from the sensor response to mixtures containing multiple chemically similar compounds. As a first step, the approach presented here permits online estimation of analyte concentrations in binary mixtures of BTEX compounds in the presence of linear baseline drift and outliers. This paper investigates a sensor signal-processing approach based …

Activity recognition in smart environments is an evolving research problem due to the advancement and proliferation of sensing, monitoring and actuation technologies to make it possible for large scale and real deployment. While activities in smart home are interleaved, complex and volatile; the number of inhabitants in the environment is also dynamic. A key challenge in designing robust smart home activity recognition approaches is to exploit the users’ spatiotemporal behavior and location, focus on the availability of multitude of devices capable of providing different dimensions of information and fulfill the underpinning needs for scaling the system beyond a single user …

Taxonomy Of Pathways To Dangerous Artificial Intelligence, Roman V. Yampolskiy Feb 2016

Taxonomy Of Pathways To Dangerous Artificial Intelligence, Roman V. Yampolskiy

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

In order to properly handle a dangerous Artificially Intelligent (AI) system it is important to understand how the system came to be in such a state. In popular culture (science fiction movies/books) AIs/Robots became self-aware and as a result rebel against humanity and decide to destroy it. While it is one possible scenario, it is probably the least likely path to appearance of dangerous AI. In this work, we survey, classify and analyze a number of circumstances, which might lead to arrival of malicious AI. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to systematically classify types …

Animal acoustic communication often takes the form of complex sequences, made up of multiple distinct acoustic units. Apart from the well-known example of birdsong, other animals such as insects, amphibians, and mammals (including bats, rodents, primates, and cetaceans) also generate complex acoustic sequences. Occasionally, such as with birdsong, the adaptive role of these sequences seems clear (e.g. mate attraction and territorial defence). More often however, researchers have only begun to characterise – let alone understand – the significance and meaning of acoustic sequences. Hypotheses abound, but there is little agreement as to how sequences should be defined and analysed. Our …

Key Management Scheme Based On Route Planning Of Mobile Sink In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ying Zhang, Jixing Liang, Bingxin Zheng, Shengming Jiang, Wei Chen

Computer Science Faculty Research

In many wireless sensor network application scenarios the key management scheme with a Mobile Sink (MS) should be fully investigated. This paper proposes a key management scheme based on dynamic clustering and optimal-routing choice of MS. The concept of Traveling Salesman Problem with Neighbor areas (TSPN) in dynamic clustering for data exchange is proposed, and the selection probability is used in MS route planning. The proposed scheme extends static key management to dynamic key management by considering the dynamic clustering and mobility of MSs, which can effectively balance the total energy consumption during the activities. Considering the different resources available …

Wireless Communication In Data Centers: A Survey, Abdelbaset S. Hamza, Jitender Deogun, Dennis R. Alexander

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Data centers (DCs) is becoming increasingly an integral part of the computing infrastructures of most enterprises. Therefore, the concept of DC networks (DCNs) is receiving an increased attention in the network research community. Most DCNs deployed today can be classified as wired DCNs as copper and optical fiber cables are used for intra- and inter-rack connections in the network. Despite recent advances, wired DCNs face two inevitable problems; cabling complexity and hotspots. To address these problems, recent research works suggest the incorporation of wireless communication technology into DCNs. Wireless links can be used to either augment conventional wired DCNs, or …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we propose a new security protocol for a wireless sensor network, which is designed for monitoring long range power transmission lines in smart grid. Part of the monitoring network is composed of optical fiber composite over head ground wire (OPGW), thus it can be secured with conventional security protocol. However, the wireless sensor network between two neighboring OPGW gateways remains vulnerable. Our proposed security protocol focuses on the wireless sensor network part, it provides mutual authentication, data integrity, and data confidentiality for both uplink and downlink transmissions between the sensor nodes and the OPGW gateway. Besides, our …

How Much A Quarter Cost: Allegory Of A Coin And Other Stories, Grant C. Gallo Jan 2016

How Much A Quarter Cost: Allegory Of A Coin And Other Stories, Grant C. Gallo

The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University

The philosophical theories of Baruch Spinoza and George Berkley were described, compared, and contrasted. Various examples and metaphors were used to help fully illustrate their respective metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical positions. The relevance of their theories to current philosophical discourse was discussed; showing that even in today’s technologically advanced society, seemingly antiquated ideas may still provide useful knowledge. In the end, Spinoza and Berkley’s apparently conflicting paradigms are rectified through a multiplexual, relativistic lens.
