G-Code Modeling For 3d Printer Quality Assessment, Tyler Welander, Ronald Marsh, Md Nurul Amin
Computer Science Faculty Publications
The Department of Computer Science at the University of North Dakota (UND) has been evaluating optical/imaging methods for measuring the quality of 3D printed parts. In particular, we are interested in optical/imaging methods that can detect and measure such quality issues as layer shifting, layer separation and splitting, overheating, dimensional accuracy, and infill errors. This paper describes our work towards the analysis of infill errors as the quality of the infill does impact the structural integrity of the part being made. Externally, a part may look acceptable, but if the infill is faulty the part may be structurally unsound. Furthermore, …

Pedagogical Benefits From An Exercise In Reverse Engineering For An Aviation Software Systems, Emanuel S. Grant, Pann Ajjimaporn
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Since the Y2K crisis, reverse engineering has become a major area of work in industrial software application development, but lacks emphasis in US academia. This issue is exemplified by the high demand for software systems in new and expanding software application areas, which has resulted in systems being implemented before the requirements and design phases have been completed. Towards the maintenance of such systems, it is necessary to conducted reverse engineering for the derivation of software documentation for requirements and high-level and low-level design. When this scenario exists in the domain of safety-critical system, particularly in the aviation industry, reverse …
Using Regular Languages To Explore The Representational Capacity Of Recurrent Neural Architectures, Abhijit Mahalunkar, John D. Kelleher
Using Regular Languages To Explore The Representational Capacity Of Recurrent Neural Architectures, Abhijit Mahalunkar, John D. Kelleher
Conference papers
The presence of Long Distance Dependencies (LDDs) in sequential data poses significant challenges for computational models. Various recurrent neural architectures have been designed to mitigate this issue. In order to test these state-of-the-art architectures, there is growing need for rich benchmarking datasets. However, one of the drawbacks of existing datasets is the lack of experimental control with regards to the presence and/or degree of LDDs. This lack of control limits the analysis of model performance in relation to the specific challenge posed by LDDs. One way to address this is to use synthetic data having the properties of subregular languages. …

Vehicle-to-barrier (V2B) communication is expected to facilitate wireless interactions between vehicles and roadside barriers in next-generation intelligent transportation systems. V2B systems will help mitigate single-vehicle, run-off-road crashes, which account for more than 50% of roadside crash fatalities. In this work, the characteristics of the wireless channel prior to and during a crash are analyzed using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) techniques, which has been used in existing vehicular communication systems. More specifically, the performance of OFDM-based V2B links are measured in real-world crash tests for the first time. Three crash tests conducted at the Midwest Roadside Safety Facility, Lincoln, Nebraska, …

Uneven-Layered Coding Metamaterial Tile For Ultrawideband Rcs Reduction And Diffuse Scattering, Jianxun Su, Huan He, Zengrui Li, Yaoqing Lamar Yang, Hongcheng Yin, Junhong Wang
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
In this paper, a novel uneven-layered coding metamaterial tile is proposed for ultra-wideband radar cross section (RCS) reduction and diffuse scattering. The metamaterial tile is composed of two kinds of square ring unit cells with different layer thickness. The reflection phase difference of 180° (±37°) between two unit cells covers an ultra-wide frequency range. Due to the phase cancellation between two unit cells, the metamaterial tile has the scattering pattern of four strong lobes deviating from normal direction. The metamaterial tile and its 90-degree rotation can be encoded as the ‘0’ and ‘1’ elements to cover an object, and diffuse …

In this work, we demonstrate that ultraviolet (UV) laser photolysis of hydrocarbon species alters the flame chemistry such that it promotes the diamond growth rate and film quality. Optical emission spectroscopy and laser-induced fluorescence demonstrate that direct UV laser irradiation of a diamond-forming combustion flame produces a large amount of reactive species that play critical roles in diamond growth, thereby leading to enhanced diamond growth. The diamond growth rate is more than doubled, and diamond quality is improved by 4.2%. Investigation of the diamond nucleation process suggests that the diamond nucleation time is significantly shortened and nondiamond carbon accumulation is …

Optimal Computational Power Allocation In Multi-Access Mobile Edge Computing For Blockchain, Yuan Wu, Xiangxu Chen, Jiajun Shi, Kejie Ni, Liping Qian, Liang Huang, Kuan Zhang
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Blockchain has emerged as a decentralized and trustable ledger for recording and storing digital transactions. The mining process of Blockchain, however, incurs a heavy computational workload for miners to solve the proof-of-work puzzle (i.e., a series of the hashing computation), which is prohibitive from the perspective of the mobile terminals (MTs). The advanced multi-access mobile edge computing (MEC), which enables the MTs to offload part of the computational workloads (for solving the proof-of-work) to the nearby edge-servers (ESs), provides a promising approach to address this issue. By offloading the computational workloads via multi-access MEC, the MTs can effectively increase their …

Structure-Mediated Excitation Of Air Plasma And Silicon Plasma Expansion In Femtosecond Laser Pulses Ablation, Qingsong Wang, Lan Jiang, Jingya Sun, Changji Pan, Weina Han, Guoyan Wang, Feifei Wang, Kaihu Zhang, Ming Li, Yongfeng Lu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Femtosecond laser-induced surface structures upon multiple pulses irradiation are strongly correlated with the pulse number, which in turn significantly affects successive laser-material interactions. By recording the dynamics of femtosecond laser ablation of silicon using time-resolved shadowgraphy, here we present direct visualization of the excitation of air plasma induced by the reflected laser during the second pulse irradiation. The interaction of the air plasma and silicon plasma is found to enhance the shockwave expansion induced by silicon ablation in the longitudinal direction, showing anisotropic expansion dynamics in different directions. We further demonstrate the vanishing of air plasma as the pulse number increases because …

Deformation Behavior Of Foam Laser Targets Fabricated By Two-Photon Polymerization, Ying Liu, John H. Campbell, Ori Stein, Lijia Jiang, Jared Hund, Yongfeng Lu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Two-photon polymerization (2PP), which is a three-dimensional micro/nano-scale additive manufacturing process, is used to fabricate component for small custom experimental packages (“targets”) to support laser-driven, high-energy-density physics research. Of particular interest is the use of 2PP to deterministically print millimeter-scale, low-density, and low atomic number (CHO) polymer matrices (“foams”). Deformation during development and drying of the foam structures remains a challenge when using certain commercial acrylic photo-resins. Acrylic resins were chosen in order to meet the low atomic number requirement for the foam; that requirement precludes the use of low-shrinkage organic/inorganic hybrid resins. Here, we compare the use of acrylic …

Bias-Dependent Scanning Tunneling Microscopy Signature Of Bridging-Oxygen Vacancies On Rutile Tio2(110), Willie B. Maddox, Danda P. Acharya, G. Jeremy Leong, Peter Sutter, Cristian V. Ciobanu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
The rutile TiO2(110) surface has long-served as a wellcharacterized, prototypical transition-metal oxide surface used in heterogeneous catalysis and photocatalytic water splitting. Naturally occurring defects on this surface, called bridging-oxygen (BO) vacancies, are important as they determine the overall reactivity of the surface. Herein, we report a bias-dependent, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) signature of the BO vacancies on TiO2(110): for sample bias voltages past a threshold of +3 V, the bright vacancies are flanked on either side (along the oxygen row) by two dark spots approximately shaped like half-moons. The BO vacancies have a bright aspect below …

Strained silicon (ε-Si) is a promising material that could extend Moore’s law by enhancing electron mobility. A ε-Si material is usually composed of multiscale, multilayer heterostructures, where the strained-silicon film or strap is tens-of-nanometers thick, and its buffer layers are of the micrometer scale. The structural properties determine the electrical performance and reliability of ε-Si-based devices. Inhomogeneous residual stress is induced during the preparation, which induces ε-Si structure failure. In this work, biaxial strained-silicon films that contain graded and relaxed germanium-silicon buffer layers were prepared on monocrystalline silicon wafers through reduced-pressure chemical-vapor epitaxy. The layer components and thicknesses were measured …

The expansion of the transmission range will allow the data packet to be received by more receivers, thus improving the …
Information Theory And Cognition: A Review, Khalid Sayood
Information Theory And Cognition: A Review, Khalid Sayood
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
We examine how information theory has been used to study cognition over the last seven decades. After an initial burst of activity in the 1950s, the backlash that followed stopped most work in this area. The last couple of decades has seen both a revival of interest, and a more firmly grounded, experimentally justified use of information theory. We can view cognition as the process of transforming perceptions into information—where we use information in the colloquial sense of the word. This last clarification is one of the problems we run into when trying to use information theoretic principles to understand …

Cyber Security And Risk Society: Estonian Discourse On Cyber Risk And Security Strategy, Lauren Kook
Cyber Security And Risk Society: Estonian Discourse On Cyber Risk And Security Strategy, Lauren Kook
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
The main aim of this thesis is to call for a new analysis of cyber security which departs from the traditional security theory. I argue that the cyber domain is inherently different in nature, in that it is lacking in traditional boundaries and is reflexive in nature. Policy-makers are aware of these characteristics, and in turn this awareness changes the way that national cyber security strategy is handled and understood. These changes cannot be adequately understood through traditional understanding of security, as they often are, without missing significant details. Rather, examining these changes through the lens of Ulrich Beck’s risk …

Security Of Autonomous Systems Under Physical Attacks: With Application To Self-Driving Cars, Raj Gautam Dutta
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The drive to achieve trustworthy autonomous cyber-physical systems (CPS), which can attain goals independently in the presence of significant uncertainties and for long periods of time without any human intervention, has always been enticing. Significant progress has been made in the avenues of both software and hardware for fulfilling these objectives. However, technological challenges still exist and particularly in terms of decision making under uncertainty. In an autonomous system, uncertainties can arise from the operating environment, adversarial attacks, and from within the system. As a result of these concerns, human-beings lack trust in these systems and hesitate to use them …

Supercapacitor Utilization For Power Smoothening And Stability Improvement Of Ahybrid Energy System In A Weak Grid Environment, Rahul Sharma, Sathans Suhag
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, a novel control scheme based on the application of a supercapacitor (SC) is proposed for power smoothening and stability improvement of a hybrid energy system (HES) in weak grid conditions. The basic property of fast charging/discharging of the SC is utilized to design the proposed control. In weak grid conditions, the control structure is proposed for power smoothening and DC link voltage regulation with the help of the SC. Moreover, the stability is increased, ripples in voltage are reduced, there is fast dynamic response, and oscillations are damped out under different conditions. In conventional control, voltage controller …

Process mining is a technique for extracting knowledge from event logs recorded by an information system. In the process discovery phase of process mining, a process model is constructed to represent the business processes systematically and to give a general opinion about the progressive of processes in the event log. The constructed process model can be very complex as a result of structured and unstructured processes recorded in real life. Previous studies proposed different approaches to filter or eliminate some processes from the model to simplify it by implementing some statistical or mathematical formulas rather than user interactions. The main …

Model Predictive Control Of A Dual Induction Motor Drive Fed By A Single Voltage Source Inverter, Muhammad Abbas Abbasi, Abdul Rashid Bin Husain
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In dual induction motor control applications, averaging of controlled variables, mean circuit models, or master/slave strategies are used, which lead to unbalanced and unstable operation of the overall drive system. An improved finite control set predictive torque control (FCS-PTC) method is proposed for the parallel operation of two induction motors. The optimization cost function of the controller is shown to meet multiple objectives simultaneously, eliminating the use of averaging techniques and without leading to unbalanced conditions. The simulation results are compared with direct torque control (DTC) for dual induction motors. As compared to DTC, model predictive control shows low torque …

Research On Power-Frequency Electromagnetic Interference Model Of Multicore Twisted Signal Cable Of High-Speed Railway, Bowen Zhang, Jiangjian Xie, Zhixin Wang, Jin Yang, Hao Yan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
With the increase in the traction power of high-speed railways, the power-frequency electromagnetic interference of traction current to the signal cables becomes increasingly more severe. In this paper, the calculation model of the magnetic interference to signal cable was established on the MATLAB/Simulink platform based on the multiconductor transmission line theory. This model took SPTYWPL03-8B 8-core twist signal cable as an example and the power-frequency interference of external current to the signal cable was analyzed theoretically. In addition, experiments on electromagnetic interference of double-ended and single-ended signal cables were performed to validate the simulation model. Experiments showed that the relative …

Real-Time Implementation Of Three-Level Inverter-Based D-Statcom Using Neuro-Fuzzy Controller, Resul Çöteli̇, Hakan Açikgöz, Beşi̇r Dandil, Servet Tuncer
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A distribution static compensator (D-STATCOM) is a custom power device connected in parallel to a power system to address electric power quality problems caused by reactive power and harmonics. To obtain high performance from a D-STATCOM, the D-STATCOM's \textit{dq}-axis currents must be controlled in an internal control loop. However, control of the D-STATCOM's currents is difficult because of its nonlinear structure, cross-coupling effect between the \textit{d}- and \textit{q}-axis, undefined dynamics, and fast changing load. Therefore, the controller to be preferred for a D-STATCOM should have a nonlinear and robust structure. In this study, a neuro-fuzzy controller (NFC), which is a …

3d Human Face Reconstruction And 2d Appearance Synthesis, Yajie Zhao
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
3D human face reconstruction has been an extensive research for decades due to its wide applications, such as animation, recognition and 3D-driven appearance synthesis. Although commodity depth sensors are widely available in recent years, image based face reconstruction are significantly valuable as images are much easier to access and store.
In this dissertation, we first propose three image-based face reconstruction approaches according to different assumption of inputs.
In the first approach, face geometry is extracted from multiple key frames of a video sequence with different head poses. The camera should be calibrated under this assumption.
As the first approach is …

The creation of digital 3D models for cultural heritage is commonplace. With the advent of efficient and cost effective technologies archaeologists are making a plethora of digital assets. This paper evaluates the identity of 3D digital assets and explores how to enhance or expand that identity by integrating photogrammetric models into VR. We propose that when a digital object acquires spatial context from its virtual surroundings, it gains an identity in relation to that virtual space, the same way that embedding the object with metadata gives it a specific identity through its relationship to other information. We explore this concept …
