Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Personal Health Record (PHR) plays an important role in realizing the exchange and interaction of medical information as well as in managing chronic diseases. In the recent decade, plenty of researches have been carried out to resolve the secure sharing issue of PHR in the cloud via access control schemes. Attribute-based Encryption (ABE) is a promising technique, which implements access control by introducing the access policy. When ABE is used to construct access control scheme in the cloud, hiding and updating access policy have always been two research hotspots. However, all of the existing solutions only consider one of these …

Seer: An Explainable Deep Learning Midi-Based Hybrid Song Recommender System, Khalil Damak, Olfa Nasraoui

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

State of the art music recommender systems mainly rely on either matrix factorization-based collaborative filtering approaches or deep learning architectures. Deep learning models usually use metadata for content-based filtering or predict the next user interaction by learning from temporal sequences of user actions. Despite advances in deep learning for song recommendation, none has taken advantage of the sequential nature of songs by learning sequence models that are based on content. Aside from the importance of prediction accuracy, other significant aspects are important, such as explainability and solving the cold start problem. In this work, we propose a hybrid deep learning …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

A comparative study of five-phase outer-rotor flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machines with different topologies for in-wheel traction applications is presented in this paper. Those topologies include double-layer winding, single-layer winding, C-core, and E-core configurations. The electromagnetic performance in the low-speed region, the flux-weakening capability in the high-speed region, and the fault-tolerance capability are all investigated in detail. The results indicate that the E-core FSPM machine has performance advantages. Furthermore, two kinds of E-core FSPM machines with different stator and rotor pole combinations are optimized, respectively. In order to reduce the computational burden during the large-scale optimization process, a mathematical technique …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This paper introduces a general method for determination of the most suitable winding configurations for five-phase flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machines, associated with feasible stator/rotor-pole combinations. Consequently, the effect of winding configurations on the performance of a five-phase outer-rotor FSPM machine is thoroughly investigated, including non-overlapping concentrated windings (single-layer, double-layer, and multi-layer) as well as distributed winding. The electromagnetic characteristics in the low-speed region, the flux-weakening capability in the high-speed region, and the fault-tolerant capability under faulty situations are evaluated and compared in detail. This work shows that compared with the conventional single-layer or double-layer concentrated windings, the FSPM machine …

As the Internet of Things revolution continues to become more prevalent in humanity's daily routine, securing these devices is paramount. Society has seen a substantial increase in activity in the cyber-warfare battle space, resulting in an increasing amount of security breaches every year. The responsibility of securing our devices can no longer rely solely on cyber-security engineers keeping systems hardened through Security Technical Implementation Guides and vulnerability scans; it must shift towards the developer. Previous research has been done in this area of securing our devices. However, these solutions rely heavily on cloud computing resources to perform computationally expensive algorithms. …

Secure Two-Party Protocol For Privacy-Preserving Classification Via Differential Privacy, Manish Kumar Dec 2019

Secure Two-Party Protocol For Privacy-Preserving Classification Via Differential Privacy, Manish Kumar

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Privacy-preserving distributed data mining is the study of mining on distributed data—owned by multiple data owners—in a non-secure environment, where the mining protocol does not reveal any sensitive information to the data owners, the individual privacy is preserved, and the output mining model is practically useful. In this thesis, we propose a secure two-party protocol for building a privacy-preserving decision tree classifier over distributed data using differential privacy. We utilize secure multiparty computation to ensure that the protocol is privacy-preserving. Our algorithm also utilizes parallel and sequential compositions, and applies distributed exponential mechanism to ensure that the output is differentially-private. …

Improved Study Of Side-Channel Attacks Using Recurrent Neural Networks, Muhammad Abu Naser Rony Chowdhury Dec 2019

Improved Study Of Side-Channel Attacks Using Recurrent Neural Networks, Muhammad Abu Naser Rony Chowdhury

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Differential power analysis attacks are special kinds of side-channel attacks where power traces are considered as the side-channel information to launch the attack. These attacks are threatening and significant security issues for modern cryptographic devices such as smart cards, and Point of Sale (POS) machine; because after careful analysis of the power traces, the attacker can break any secured encryption algorithm and can steal sensitive information.

In our work, we study differential power analysis attack using two popular neural networks: Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Our work seeks to answer three research questions(RQs):

RQ1: Is it …

Being Together—Or, Being Less Un-Together—With Networked Music, Rebekah Wilson, Andrew Mcmillan Nov 2019

Being Together—Or, Being Less Un-Together—With Networked Music, Rebekah Wilson, Andrew Mcmillan

Journal of Network Music and Arts

When musicians cannot travel to another location where other musicians are, they generally assume that this means they cannot perform music together—even while the technology exists to allow them to do so. The perception that Internet technology is not suited for music performance is due to a lack of exposure on navigating the limitations specific to networked music, along with the cultural belief that latency is incompatible with music performance. Many groups, however, have successfully created networked music performance systems. Such systems are particularly interesting in affording new musical and social opportunities in cases when musicians cannot travel due to …

Considering Telematic Tools For Conferences, Scott Deal, Rodney Smith, Chuiyuan Meng, Matt Vice Nov 2019

Considering Telematic Tools For Conferences, Scott Deal, Rodney Smith, Chuiyuan Meng, Matt Vice

Journal of Network Music and Arts

Participation in conferences is an elemental component of professional life throughout the world. Two problems offset the social synergy gained from attending a far-away gathering of like-minded people. The first is the highly pronounced carbon footprint from air travel, and the second is the expense involved to participate in a conference which may be on another continent. These factors prevent many from participating who could otherwise benefit as well as contribute. As videoconferencing becomes more common and more sophisticated, it will serve as an alternative that not only benefits constituencies, but will expand the reach of a conference to more …

Understanding The Telematic Apparatus, Patrick Muller, Benjamin Burger, Joel De Giovanni, Matthias Ziegler Nov 2019

Understanding The Telematic Apparatus, Patrick Muller, Benjamin Burger, Joel De Giovanni, Matthias Ziegler

Journal of Network Music and Arts

Under the conditions of its geographic distribution, the “telematic performance” can be regarded as a remediation of traditional concert, theater or dance formats. Conversely, and as this paper argues, the telematic performance can also be understood as an artistic format of its own right, one which then can serve as a trope for social interaction under the conditions of critical posthumanism. To gain a wider perspective, this paper analyzes Alan Turing’s “Imitation Game” from his seminal article Computing Machinery and Intelligence, 1950, proposing it as an early conceptualization of a telematic performance. This against-the-grain reading of Turing’s text reveals certain …

Robust And Self-Synchronous Steganography For Voice-Over-Ip Based On Ldpc Codes, Zhanzhan Gao, Guangming Tang, Haitao Song

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: VoIP (Voice over IP) is a kind of voice communication technology based on UDP/IP protocols, so packet loss will inevitably happen when the channel environment deteriorates. Besides that, stego VoIP data flows are real-time and have no head or tail, which pose more challenges to accurately extract the secret messages. This paper proposes a robust and self-synchronous VoIP steganography method, which solves the above two problems under the premise of maintaining good imperceptibility. In this method, low density parity check (LDPC) codes are introduced to preprocess the secret data, and the encoded data are embedded into voice …

With the method proposed, limb coverage problem and coverage fusion when time step is large can be solved. Computer simulation results show that the algorithm achieves a fine accuracy and …

Locally Weighted Learning Control For Dynamic Restricted Manipulators, Wang Gang, Tairen Sun, Shengpei Ding Nov 2019

Locally Weighted Learning Control For Dynamic Restricted Manipulators, Wang Gang, Tairen Sun, Shengpei Ding

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: This paper proposes a locally weighted learning control law for a manipulator with state and input constraints and modeling uncertainties. By visualizing the control input as an extended state, the control problem is converted into control design for a state-constraint uncertain nonlinear system. Barrier Lyapunov functions are introduced into a backstepping procedure and a locally weighted learning control is designed, which ensures the exponential convergence of the barrier functions to a small neighborhood of zero and then guarantees satisfaction of system constraints and the tracking error convergence. The control feasibility and effectiveness is validated by theoretical analysis and …

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Multiple robots path planning problem in dynamic environment is one of the significant and basic problems of cluster robot perception and coordination. The planning problem is decomposed into two modules: the path planning and the conflict coordination. By introducing time-cost function, the Time Integrated A* algorithm (TI-A*) is introduced. Variable speed is employed simultaneously to coordinate the motion and hereby to avoid the deadlock and conflict. By adjusting the timing when the coordination phase is involved, two different coordination TI-A* algorithms are presented, including the speed-changing algorithm and path-changing algorithm. The two algorithms are compared and the respective …
