Machine Foundations And Blast Engineering Vibrations Case Studies, Ion Vlad

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Vibration can cause either serviceability and malfunctioning problems reducing people’s comfort to an unacceptable level, or safety problems with danger of failure. The belief of the author is that the presentation of some practical cases of machine foundation vibrations will be of interest, beneficial and helpful for many researchers and engineers involved in both theoretical and practical studies. Therefore, the most relevant case studies on vibrations of machine foundation ensembles, encountered in practice in the last ten years of activity, will be presented. In all malfunctioning or excessive vibration cases the technical assessment has started with a complex program of …

Distributed Hydrological Modeling Using Soil Depth Estimated Based On Landscape Variables From Enhanced Terrain Analysis, Teklu K. Tesfa May 2010

Distributed Hydrological Modeling Using Soil Depth Estimated Based On Landscape Variables From Enhanced Terrain Analysis, Teklu K. Tesfa

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The spatial patterns of land surface and subsurface characteristics determine the spatial heterogeneity of hydrological processes. Soil depth is one of these characteristics and an important input parameter required by distributed hydrological models that explicitly represent spatial heterogeneity. Soil is related to topography and land cover due to the role played by topography and vegetation in affecting soil-forming processes. The research described in this dissertation addressed the development of statistical models that predict the soil depth pattern over the landscape; derivation of new topographic variables evaluated using both serial and parallel algorithms; and evaluation of the impacts of detailed soil …

A Study Of Cause And Effect Relationships Of Snowmelt-Induced Movement For The Skunk Hollow Landslide, Brent P. Randall May 2010

A Study Of Cause And Effect Relationships Of Snowmelt-Induced Movement For The Skunk Hollow Landslide, Brent P. Randall

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Skunk Hollow Landslide (located 1 mile north of Mantua, UT along US-89) was instrumented with an automated monitoring system to aid in the determination of the triggering mechanism of slow moving landslides. Data was transmitted wirelessly through telecommunications to allow year-round, real-time monitoring of the site. Measurements were recorded and analyzed for the first season of landslide movement (fall 2009 to spring 2010) to better understand the correlations between snowmelt and movement initiation. Based on the first year of data, it appears that the Skunk Hollow Landslide is controlled by water infiltrating into the slide mass through cracks and …

Influence Of Material Type, Aggregate Size, And Unconfined Compressive Strength On Water Jetting Of Cidh Pile Anomalies, Joseph Carl Heavin Mar 2010

Influence Of Material Type, Aggregate Size, And Unconfined Compressive Strength On Water Jetting Of Cidh Pile Anomalies, Joseph Carl Heavin

Master's Theses

Water jetting as a means for removing anomalous materials from cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) piles was examined. The primary objective of this research was to establish empirical relationships between different jetting parameters and the removal of commonly occurring anomalous zone materials, including low-strength concrete, slurry mixed concrete, grout, and clay soil. Also investigated was the current standard-of-practice used by water jetting contractors within California. The testing specimens consisted of typical anomalous material with unconfined compressive strengths between 5 and 6,000 psi. The experimental work consisted of water blasting submerged specimens using rotary jets, nozzles, and pumping equipment typically used in construction practice. …

Agenda: The Promise And Peril Of Oil Shale Development, University Of Colorado Boulder. Natural Resources Law Center

The Promise and Peril of Oil Shale Development (February 5)

The largest known oil shale deposits in the world are in the Green River Formation, which covers portions of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. Fully one-half of the world’s oil shale lies within 150 miles of Grand Junction, Colorado, and about 80% of these reserves are on federal land. Estimates of recoverable reserves in the Green River Formation range from 500 billion to 1.53 trillion barrels. At present consumption rates, this is enough oil to satisfy 100% of U.S. demand for well over 100 years.

Development of oil shale could cause significant impacts on the Colorado Plateau. It would provide for …

Impact Of Moisture Content And Density On Stiffness-Based Acceptance Of Geomaterials, Lourdes Guadalupe Pacheco Jan 2010

Impact Of Moisture Content And Density On Stiffness-Based Acceptance Of Geomaterials, Lourdes Guadalupe Pacheco

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Modulus-based quality management of compacted layers has been considered by a number of highway agencies. Even though simple in concept, the paradigm shift from density to modulus for quality acceptance has generated some technical and institutional challenges. One of these complications is that for a given density, the modulus can vastly vary depending on the moisture content at the time of compaction and at the time of acceptance. The results of a systematic study carried out to qualify and quantify the impact of compaction moisture content, moisture content at the time of field testing and density on the modulus and …

Applicability Of Mepdg For India Based On Texas Pavement And Environmental Conditions, Vamsi Krishna Pinnamaneni Jan 2010

Applicability Of Mepdg For India Based On Texas Pavement And Environmental Conditions, Vamsi Krishna Pinnamaneni

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The Indian pavement design guide uses empirical models which were adopted and modified from US design guides. As with any empirical model, the prediction capabilities are limited to the conditions for which it was developed. In USA, Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) has been recently developed to account for increase in truck traffic and minimize premature failure of pavements. Since the new design uses mechanistic approach, it is expected that the design guide can better predict performance of pavements. In addition, mechanistic approach allows use of design guide for different pavement and environmental conditions by calibrating model parameters for …

Investigation Of The Geotechnical Properties Of Municipal Solid Waste As A Function Of Placement Conditions, Wilson W. Wong Sep 2009

Investigation Of The Geotechnical Properties Of Municipal Solid Waste As A Function Of Placement Conditions, Wilson W. Wong

Master's Theses

An investigation of the variability of engineering properties of municipal solid waste as a function of placement conditions was conducted. Limited data have been reported for the engineering properties of municipal solid waste (MSW) as a function of placement conditions. Wastes have high variability of engineering properties due to heterogeneity in composition and component size; influence from time based effects; and presence of compressible solids. Control of moisture content of MSW at the time of waste placement provides opportunity for increased capacity at a given landfill site due to higher compacted unit weight as well as for control of other …

Seismic Evaluation Of Clark County Critical Bridges Using Nonlinear Static Procedures, Ahmad Said Saad Aug 2009

Seismic Evaluation Of Clark County Critical Bridges Using Nonlinear Static Procedures, Ahmad Said Saad

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Bridges are vital connective elements in community transportation systems. In the past, bridges have been severely damaged by earthquakes. However, with proper mitigation techniques, such as bridge retrofit, severe earthquake damage to bridges can be avoided. Since the 1970’s, design codes underwent major changes with regard to seismic analysis and design provisions of structures and bridges. Meanwhile, one third of the nation’s 600,000 inventoried highway bridges are considered as either structurally deficient or functionally obsolete.

This study is a part of the “Earthquakes in Southern Nevada” project. Earlier in this project, buildings and bridges in southern Nevada were studied in …

Tensile Strength And Failure Criterion Of Analog Lithophysal Rock, James A. Nott Jan 2009

Tensile Strength And Failure Criterion Of Analog Lithophysal Rock, James A. Nott

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This project determines the tensile strength of lithophysal analog rock and presents failure criteria that can be used by geotechnical engineers to evaluate underground structures in rock. The physical and mechanical properties that are related to the failure criterion, such as porosity, compressive strength and modulus of elasticity, are also discussed. Experimental tensile tests were made using direct uniaxial and indirect Brazilian tests. Three 4-inch specimens were fabricated and tested in direct uniaxial tensile tests using Hydro-Stone TB. The results showed that the elastic tensile modulus of elasticity was within two percent of existing data for the compressive modulus of …
