Once radioactive waste is emplaced in the repository, the challenge of monitoring the continued integrity of the excavated openings (e.g., emplacement drifts) escalates tremendously. We envision a seismic monitoring array installed on the surface at Yucca Mountain, which operates automatically to monitor repository opening stability in the long term. The objective is to monitor and validate the structural integrity of the emplacement drifts through identifying and localizing rock falls that could compromise drift access, hinder waste retrievability, and potentially reduce the effective life of waste canisters. Solid models of geologic structures are useful tools for geologists and engineers. Solid models completely and unambiguously define the stratigraphy for the site being modeled, including complex boundaries and embedded seams. Past research has focused on the “set operations” approach to create solid models. Whereas the set operations approach is flexible, it requires significant user intervention and is therefore difficult to use. A simple approach for generating solid models from borehole data, called the horizons method, is presented. The power draw characteristics of air compressors are primarily determined by the type of compressor control and the relationship between the compressor’s output capacity and the compressed air demand in the plant. In this paper, we review the most common types of compressor control for small reciprocating and rotary air compressors, and derive relations for estimating compressed air output as a function of the type of control and motor loading. Using these relations, we develop a method to estimate the ratio of compressed air output to energy input, which we call the average operating efficiency, based on input power to …

TASK 26: Upgrade of Earthquake Simulation Facilities in the Large-Scale Structures Laboratory at University of Nevada Reno The objective of this Task was to purchase, install and commission the equipment necessary to upgrade two existing shake tables in the Structures Laboratory at UNR, from uniaxial to biaxial motion. It was recognized that a parallel effort, funded by NSF and HUD, to add a third biaxial table with identical properties to the upgraded existing tables, would be undertaken at the same time.

Anisotropy And Its Relation To Liquefaction Resistance Of Granular Material, Isao Ishibashi, Omer F. Capar

This research establishes quantitative relationships between soil's anisotropy and liquefaction resistance for granular materials. Uniform medium density (Dr = 50%) sand specimens were prepared using three different sample preparation techniques (air pluviated (AP), moist tamped (NIT), and moist vibrated (MV)) to create different initial soil fabrics. Undrained cyclic triaxial tests were then performed to determine the liquefaction resistance of each soil specimen. On the same specimens in the triaxial cell, vertical and horizontal compression wave velocities and vertical shear wave velocity (Vs) were measured using piezoelectric bender elements.
