This research aimed at establishing whether spatial data and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can contribute to Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA). To achieve this, an integrated GISEA approach was developed and applied to a number of spatial planning SEAs in the Republic of Ireland. The practical applicability of the approach was examined, evaluating the potential benefits derived from using spatial data and GIS in SEA and assessing the potential barriers to an effective GIS use. A deterministic seismic hazard analysis was conducted to address the effect of local soil conditions on earthquake-induced strong ground motion in the Las Vegas Basin, Nevada (US). Using a large geological and geotechnical database, two response units were defined: a fine-grained unit, predominantly clay; and a coarse-grained unit, predominantly gravel. A moderate number of high-quality shallow shear wave velocity measurements were collected from which characteristic shear wave velocity profiles were developed for each response unit. An equivalent-linear one-dimensional site response model was used. The model was calibrated using a basin-wide, small-strain ground motion database. Calibration tests showed that ground motion …

This paper focuses on the description, analysis and stabilization of a failed cut slope in schist. The slope is located near the top of a hill and was cut for the needs of a new industrial building. A few weeks after the excavation, a slide occurred along the schistosity plane of the slope. The slide was attributed to the effect of water which flooded the slope following an overflow of a water tank located a few meters above the slope crest. This paper presents a case history of trench collapse occurred during trench excavation in soft ground. The development of settlement and horizontal displacement, the generation of pore water pressure during the construction and mechanism of trench collapse are investigated by means of centrifuge modeling and numerical analysis. It is found that the combination of centrifuge modeling and in-flight sand hopper can provide dramatic result for simulation of the trench collapse. Based on the results, it is verified that the occurrence of trench collapse is mainly caused by the excessive surcharge load of excavated material stockpiled on top of the trench.

In this paper, we examine the role of grain mineralogy and compressibility, sample preparation, and shear strain/displacement levels on the shearing behavior of sands using undrained triaxial and constant volume ring shear tests in an attempt to explain some discrepancies observed between field and laboratory behavior. As expected, preparation by moist tamping can produce specimens that are contractive throughout shear, while counterparts prepared using pluviation exhibit dilative behavior at intermediate shear strain/displacement levels (i.e., after initial yield). However, both triaxial and ring shear tests illustrate that some sands consisting of more compressible minerals can exhibit entirely contractive behavior regardless of …

Pile foundations are regarded as a safe alternative for supporting structures in seismic areas. The performance of piles depends on soil profile, pile and earthquake parameters. The soils may also be prone to liquefaction. In non-liquefying soils the shear modulus degrades with increasing strain or displacements. Material damping increases with increasing strain or displacement. The paper presents the main results of a FEM 3-D model reproducing a physical model subjected to shaking table tests. The tests, performed at the EERC laboratory of Bristol University, have been simulated by means of a new numerical model based on a recent constitutive model characterized by isotropic and kinematic hardening and devoted to granular soil. In this paper, a case history of a deep excavation in Shanghai, which was adjacent to a historical building founded on 27 m long wooden piles and operating Metro tunnels, is presented. The effects of the excavation on the nearby pile foundation and the existing tunnels are investigated using two-dimensional finite element modeling. The predicted maximum horizontal and vertical displacements of the wooden piles are 15.8 mm and 7.6 mm, respectively. A case history of extensive 60-m high excavations in a weak rock mass for a canyon landfill in Northern California is presented. The landfill is underlain by the Panoche Formation, a complex series of sandstones, siltstones, claystones, shales and conglomerates, thought to be dominantly turbidites, deposited as sub-sea fan deposits. As part of the design, kinematic analyses were performed, accompanied by two independent approaches used to evaluate the strength of the rock mass. In late 1970s and through 1980s the Soviet Government and the Communist Party encouraged engineers and scientists to develop innovations, to implement them in order to optimize and to increase the effectiveness of the national economy. “The economy must be economical” was the slogan of this policy. The R@D programs were well funded by the State. The paper describes two failures, linked up with implementation of cost-saving innovations: explosion of a 10,000 m3 liquid ammonia storage tank, and failure of a raft footing on largely spaced piles.

Recently (2007), during the rehabilitation of the Greek Railway Organization (OSE) line Korinth – Tripolis – Kalamata, longitudinal cracks have been observed in some of the prestressed monoblock sleepers of metric gauge used in this line. In this paper the methodology adopted by the committee that investigated the causes of this phenomenon is presented, e.g. on site investigation of the damaged sleepers, investigation of the probable causes of the cracks during the production of the sleepers (faulty concrete grade – faulty prestress level e.t.c.), together with theoretical considerations which, all together, led to the cracking of the sleepers.

This paper summarizes the execution of an on-going ice protection barrier construction project in the Northern Caspian Sea, Kazakhstan. The Project started in May, 2001 and a total of five artificial islands for oil drilling activities were completed until November, 2007. Ice protection structures consist of stronghold and barrier heads distributed around oil drilling islands (with dimensions of 90 m by 110 m to 90 m by 160 m) in order to protect the island from drifting ice ridges. A mixed low-level radioactive waste (LLRW) and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) waste on-site disposal facility (OSDF) was constructed as part of the remediation of the U.S. Department of Energy Feed Material Production Center in Fernald, Ohio. The 56-acre OSDF is fully constructed, filled with waste, and closed. Post-closure monitoring is ongoing. This paper presents the design, construction, and performance of the OSDF. The paper describes an approach for qualifying soil-structure systems behavior, using simple numeric models – “geotoys”, reflecting the main features of the systems behavior and enabling numeric simulation of various case histories. Three case histories of major karstic sinkholes are analyzed to show that man-made structures above a karstic cavity prevent formation sinkhole. When plastic zones reach the structure periphery, the soil-structure system becomes unstable. Prior settlements could be negligible to serve as precursors. This paper is a case study for a governmental building in a site located at Katamia zone (an extension of Great Cairo, Egypt). The site is belonging the Great Cairo Bus Station under the authority of Ministry of Transportation. It consists of two buildings and a shed for buses cleaning and lubrication. The buildings had been constructed since 15 years. However after two years of construction many cracks were noticed in the main building. Soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects when evaluating seismic response of deep bridge foundations to earthquake loading are complex and sometimes intriguing. The main factors in soil-structure interaction considerations that govern the seismic design of deep bridge foundations include interactive inertial forces, soil-pile kinematic forces in particular in liquefied sands or strain-softened clays due to seismic shaking, and the loss of soil support to the piles due to soil liquefaction. To evaluate these three key effects for the design of bridge foundations in seismic regions, soil-structure interaction analyses are normally required.
