The determination of haul units is one of the important steps in the equipment selection process. The process should aim at minimizing the operational costs and create an optimal match for the haulage system. When open pit mines operating towards closure, reducing the operational costs results in significant gaining, and the savings can be used to implement some of the closure plans. In this paper, the prediction of haul units for an open pit mine which operates towards the final pit limit was analysed using discrete event simulation and multiple linear regressions. Among the many environmental issues of urbanization, the UHI (urban heat island) effect and storm water runoff are of particular interest when it comes building structures. This research develops a novel experiment using flattened Brazilian disks under confining pressure with concurrent permeability measurements and acoustic emission monitoring. The purpose of this work is to correlate damage and permeability in brittle geo-materials. Two series of tests are performed on concrete and one series on tuff, under a range of confining stresses between 2.76 and 13.79 MPa. Tests were continued beyond peak stress conditions, capturing data in the post-peak region. The acoustic emission data (cumulative energy and counts) are used to identify damage thresholds and track the progression of microscopic damage. This quantified damage is then correlated to …

The Mississippi River Delta (MRD) is socioeconomically important to the state of Louisiana and the United States. Various types of land-water system data have been collected in the MRD. However, very few efforts have been made to utilize these datasets in modeling regional stratigraphy and groundwater dynamics in the MRD, especially for the upper 50 m of the depth. Earth dams and levees are constructed and retrofitted nowadays using the same materials that were used in the past, clays and sands. Despite the current advances in engineering, designing and constructing these critical infrastructure, earthen dams and levees continue to suffer from the same challenges over the years. These challenges include internal and surface erosions, loss of stability due to moisture migration, and inabilities to self-heal potential failure points. The article presents the results of thermal analysis of samples of minerals – calcite (limestone), dolomite, magnesite and quartz, as well as their mixtures in the host rock of uranium ore. It has been established that thermal decomposition (dissociation) of calcite occurs in one stage at a temperature of 870°C, magnesite - in one stage at 6500° C, and dolomite - in two stages at 7300°C and at 9100°C. Thermal analysis of a sample of uranium ore showed that, as host rocks, it contains calcite, dolomite, and quartz.

Unbonded concrete overlay (UBCO) is a cost-effective technique used to rehabilitate damaged concrete pavements. The hydromechanical behavior of soil is governed by parameters that include the moisture content, soil matric potential, texture, and the mineralogical composition of the soil. Remote characterization of these and other key properties of the soil offers advantages over conventional in situ or laboratory-based measurements: information may be acquired rapidly over large, or inaccessible areas; samples do not need to be collected; and the measurements are non-destructive. Cracking has become the primary asphalt pavement distress in Arkansas. Arkansas along with other states have implemented a test to measure rutting resistance. This paper presents research to implement a cracking resistance test to further modify the Superpave volumetric asphalt mixture design method in Arkansas. The Illinois Flexibility Index Test (I-FIT) was the test chosen to analyze for this research. The main objective of this study is to develop a practical and implementable numerical model for predicting the moisture (suction) regime within the pavement subgrade system. The research quality and uniformly-dispersed climate data over short distances from Oklahoma Mesonet and the Mitchell based moisture (suction) prediction methods establish the main background of the research study. This data sheet shows the measurements taken from vane shear tests in a soil-bentonite slurry trench cutoff wall. The vane obtained for the test was built in accordance to the ASTM standards of designation 2573. Due to the softness of the clay, to ensure the feasibility of acceptable torque resolution, the vane’s diameter, shaft diameter, and vane height at 100 mm, 16.5 mm, and 250 mm respectively were the largest acceptable sizes to use from the abovementioned standards.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the fatigue cracking performance of geogrid-reinforced Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA) for use in airfield runways. An airfield HMA mixture with four different geogrid types were selected for this study. The geogrids varied in tensile strength, coating type, opening size, thickness, and fiber material. Several different laboratory performance tests were conducted (Dynamic Complex Modulus, DCM, Overlay Test, OT, and Indirect Tensile Strength, ITS) and the fatigue and/or cracking performance was evaluated.
