The primary objective of this research is to evaluate the feasibility of several WMA mixtures as potential asphalt paving mixtures for Nebraska pavements. To that end, three well-known WMA additives (i.e., Sasobit, Evotherm, and Advera synthetic zeolite) were evaluated. For a more realistic evaluation of the WMA approaches, trial pavement sections of the WMA mixtures and their HMA counterparts were implemented in Antelope County, Nebraska. More than one ton of field-mixed loose mixtures were collected at the time of paving and were transported to the NDOR and UNL laboratories to conduct comprehensive laboratory evaluations and pavement performance predictions of the …

Motor vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of death in the United States. The most recent data available show that in 2006 there were almost 6 million police-reported motor vehicle crashes in the United States where a total of 42,642 people were killed and an additional 2.6 million were injured. The majority of these motor vehicle crashes occurred at intersections or within the intersection influence areas. Traffic conflicts occur at intersections due to traffic streams moving in different directions interfering with each other, and as a result they become areas with high potential for traffic crashes compared with …

This paper presents the preliminary findings of a TCD/NRA vacuum preloading field trial that is part of a research project into the construction options for improving rampart roads. Vacuum preloading is a construction method used to accelerate settlement and the increase shear strength by applying a vacuum pressure to the ground by means of prefabricated vertical drains, an impervious tight sheet and a vacuum pump. Consolidating the ground by applying a vacuum load has several advantages over other techniques, for example; no fill material is required; construction periods are generally shorter; and there is no need for chemical admixtures. The current drought over the Colorado River Basin has raised concerns that the US Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) may impose water shortages over the lower portion of the basin for the first time in history. The guidelines that determine levels of shortage are affected by forecasts determined by the Colorado Basin River Forecast Center (CBRFC). While these forecasts by the CBRFC are useful, water managers within the basin are interested in long-term projections of streamflow, particularly under changing climate conditions. Buildings account for approximately 40% of energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in developed economies, of which approximately 55% of building energy is used for heating and cooling. The reduction of building-related GHG emissions is a high international policy priority. For this reason and because there are many technical solutions for this, these polices should involve significant improvements in the uptake of small-scale energy efficient (EE) systems. Underground structures perform an important role in transportation systems in many seismically active regions around the world, but empirical data regarding the seismic behavior of these structures is limited. This research works towards filling that empirical gap through the use of scale model shake table testing. Underground seismic soil-structure interaction (USSSI) effects were investigated for a stiff rectangular tunnel cross-section embedded within soft clay. This paper describes some recent developments in the selection of ground motions for design; the conditional mean spectrum approach and risk targeted ground motions. The conditional mean spectrum approach is just finding its way into practice and its application to a major dam is presented. Risk targeted ground motions are the basis for the next generation of building codes in the USA. The process of determining these motions is explained. Presented in this paper is an effort in providing an advanced yet practical tool with a reasonable level of complexity for modeling of clays in realistic geotechnical engineering problems. SANICLAY model is a Simple ANIsotropic CLAY plasticity model that has been developed by Dafalias et al. (2006). The SANICLAY model provides successful simulation of both undrained and drained rateindependent behavior of normally consolidated clays, and to a satisfactory degree of accuracy of overconsolidated clays. Ground vibrations generated during a large structural demolition event can be potentially damaging to nearby structures or sensitive equipment. In this paper, an approach for the prediction of the ground vibration induced by a large free-falling heavy weight is proposed based on both measured and collected data. A series of field ground vibration measurements were performed relative to the dynamic motions induced by free-falling heavy structural elements during demolition of a generating plant in the upper Midwest, USA. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate liquefaction potential and cyclic failure of subsoils of Tuzla area located on the eastern coast of Cyprus. The in-situ tests of cone penetration test (CPT) and standard penetration test (SPT) were used for site specific evaluation of liquefaction potential. Index properties and undrained shear strength (su) were used to assess cyclic failure potential of fine-grained soils. Liquefaction potential index (LPI) was evaluated based on the calculated factor of safeties for each CPT location. Sensitivity of soils was indirectly estimated from liquidity index (LI). Shear wave velocity (Vs) is an important parameter for the design of geotechnical works in seismically active areas. The Vs value commonly reflects geological information and engineering properties such as stiffness and density. It is also an important parameter of soil for design and site response purposes. As a part of a microzonation study, field tests performed in Erbaa, Turkey were evaluated to obtain shear wave velocity profiles. Foundation failures observed over saturated silt-clay mixtures during past earthquakes clearly indicate the need for a profound understanding of the behavior of such soils under seismic loading. Although the mechanisms dominating the response of fine grained soils under seismic loading are known to be different from those of sandy soils, the behavior of low plasticity silt and clay is still under discussion. The small strain shear modulus (G0) and the degradation of shear modulus (G/G0) with increasing magnitude of shear strain are important soil properties required for the evaluation of site response due to earthquake effects. Design method of rational composite foundation capable of reducing seismic response of structures was studied. Analysis of the effects of damping materials on the reduction of seismic response of a full-scale structure was performed. Shaking experiment and seismic observation for model foundations confirming the damping effects were conducted and development of new damping material are described.
