An object at rest with reference to the earth 's surface is in rapid motion with reference to the earth's axis of rotation just as a person may be at rest in a Pullman car and at the same time be in rapid motion with reference to the ground. All divisions of matter, - masses, molecules, atoms, protons, and electrons are moving relatively all of the time.
