Sex Education In New South Wales, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer), Beryl King Jan 1947

Sex Education In New South Wales, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer), Beryl King

Information Bulletin 1945-1951

This bulletin includes a study conducted in 1946 by Miss Beryl King, at that time on the staff of the Armidale Teachers’ College in New South Wales, who surveyed the amount and type of sex education given through schools or churches across three states, Victoria, NSW, and Queensland. It found that non-departmental (private) schools teach more biological science involving reproduction than did departmental (public) schools. Furthermore, it suggests that there is little administrative difference regarding sex education in the three states, with any steps taken to instruct on sex education resting entirely with the teachers themselves. The questionnaires were also …

The Revival Of The Folk Dance As Social Recreation In Northern California, Grace Tener Frye

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This paper is limited to a few brief but important statements on the early development of the folk dance. As for its origins, it is quite obscure. From the studies of its beginnings, it can be freely said that it began with primitive man who used his body to express his feelings. Ruth Radir writes; "Man, we believe, has always danced. The beginnings of the dance, like the beginnings of all man's expressive life, are shrouded in a speculative past."1

Track And Field Sport Past And Present, J. Arthur Miles

Bachelors’ Theses

This is a brief account of the last half-century’s history and. development of track and field athletics in the United States. In a survey of this sort it is extremely difficult to give a detailed description of this phase of athletics mainly because it is only in the last fifty years that this sport has gained a foot-hold in America and information on the development of track in this country is meager.

Physical Education In Universities And Colleges In The Middle West, Hyman Popuch

Bachelors’ Theses

Ever since the World War many social and economic changes have affected the problem of providing a wholesome and satisfying program of physical education and recreation to meet the existing needs for the proper use of leisure time. As the situation now presents itself, the schools should make every bonafide effort to set up a versatile program of physical education. Educators and physical educators, are now accepting the fact that mental, moral, social and physical education are a necessary part of general education. Before the present changes occurred in modern social adjustments, the home and industry were able to provide …

Backfield Play In Football, Charles Joe Wild May 1934

Backfield Play In Football, Charles Joe Wild

Bachelors’ Theses

Twenty-five or thirty years ago the selection of a football team was mainly a matter of picking out the biggest and strongest men on the squad. The weaker or lighter men were eliminated during the first weeks of practice by a series of scrimmages and by other hard bodily tests. It was a common belief that the men who withstood these first drills were the men who were of varsity caliber. One of the common methods of training a team in the early days was to have the men spend hours falling on the ball. This useless practice was supposed …

The History Of Development Of Stadia, Carroll C. Roark May 1934

The History Of Development Of Stadia, Carroll C. Roark

Bachelors’ Theses

Athletics and athletic games have been a part of man's life ever since his beginning. Naturally, in order to play these games, he had to have a place in which to play. He could not go out into his own back yard or his neighbor's and hold a chariot race or track and field meet. Special places had to be devised for the holding of such contests. Hence, began the development of what was to become our modern stadia. It is my purpose to trace the history and development of these places, from the earliest sources possible, up to our …

Lineplay In Football, Walter A. Plewe Apr 1934

Lineplay In Football, Walter A. Plewe

Bachelors’ Theses

After playing, watching, and reading about football, the writer is convinced that the line of a football team is the deciding element which will determine the success or failure of that team. Yes linemen! Of course they are of some importance the average spectator will say, but look at that backfield, watch those runners, passers, kickers, they will win the game for us. There is a true example of the football for who will watch the Saturday afternoon game, read the Sunday morning headlines, and consequently be more convinced than ever that line play is only incidental. This is not …

Center Play In Football, Arthur Lorenz Krueger Apr 1934

Center Play In Football, Arthur Lorenz Krueger

Bachelors’ Theses

Let us go back to the early eras of football, when the game was more or less a rough and tumble affair and when men depended upon brawn and strength to gain heights in the game. The little man was often left out of the game, and usually only one light man made any college football team, the quarterback. On the other hand the heaviest man usually was the center. He was expected not only to pass the ball but also to lead interference on line smashes which constituted nearly the whole offense of old-time football; and he had to …

Football Injuries At The College Of The Pacific 1924 To 1933, Robert L. Breeden Jan 1934

Football Injuries At The College Of The Pacific 1924 To 1933, Robert L. Breeden

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The interest in football injuries has increased with the increased enthusiasm for the sport. The coach is finding it more and more important to have all of his players in the best possible condition to withstand the terrific strain under which they must compete. The public wants to see a well played, exciting game, but the days of brutality seem to be vanishing. The average fan would rather see the best players play in the game than to have them sit on the bench in plaster casts.

This has led to a series of quite wide-spread investigations dealing with the …
