The Effects Of Electrical Muscle Stimulation On Strength Gains In Healthy Subjects, Mary Jacobson
The Effects Of Electrical Muscle Stimulation On Strength Gains In Healthy Subjects, Mary Jacobson
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
It was the purpose of this study to test the effects of electrical muscle stimulation in developing strength. An additional purpose was to determine if specificity of training occurs with electrical muscle stimulation, in that a slow electrical pulse rate would be more effective in developing strength at slow limb speeds while faster electrical pulse rates would be more effective for strength at a faster limb speed. Thirty subjects were assigned to one of three treatment groups, (control, 5 electrical pulses/s stimulation group, and an 80 electrical pulses/s stimulation group) depending upon their tolerance to the electrical stimulation. Treatment groups …

The Impact Of A Model Inservice Program On The Components Of Comprehensive School Health Education, Susan J. Koch
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Inservice education has been utilized for both professional growth and school improvement in all educational disciplines for more than a century. As the focus of school health education has extended to include the concept of the wellness lifestyle and health promotion, school health educators have employed inservice education as a vehicle for improving the three components of comprehensive school health education: curriculum and instruction, school health services, and the healthful school environment.
One response to the need for professional training of school employees in wellness has been the Seaside inservice model. Initiated in Oregon in 1977, the model is based …

The number of men and women with lower extremity disability is growing {Pollock, Miller, Linnerind, Laughridge, Coleman, and Alexander, 1974). A chief cause of this growth is an increase in the number of accidents damaging the spinal column (Pollock et al., 1974). However, many individuals are also born with these types of disabilities, and one of the causes is a disease termed spina bifida. Spina bifida occurs in about 3 per 1000 live births (Batshaw & Perret, 1981). The spine of children born with this defect is bifida and may be exposed, along with nervous tissue surrounding the area, on …

The Effect Of A Corporate Fitness Program On Worker Productivity, Joseph A. Leutzinger
Student Work
Other parts of the world, namely Europe and Asia, are out producing the United States. According to Steers & Porter (1987), the U.S. ranked sixth among seven leading industrial nations in productivity increases from 1968-1978. An unhealthy life-style is one factor causing decreased productivity in the U.S. (Cox, Shephard & Corey, 1981). Fitness level, work capacity, mental fatigue and stress are related to life-style and have an impact on productivity (Falkenberg, 1987). It is estimated that two-thirds of all businesses in the U.S. with fifty or more employees offer some type of health promotion program (McLemore & Dolzier, 1987). These …

A Pilot Study Of The Effects Of Cross-Age Teaching On Eating Habits, Lucy Andrick Sullivan
A Pilot Study Of The Effects Of Cross-Age Teaching On Eating Habits, Lucy Andrick Sullivan
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
A major goal in nutrition education is to promote adequate nourishment throughout the entire populace. Frequently, teenagers are identified as a population subgroup with poor dietary habits. Adolescents tend to skip meals, snack excessively, adopt poor dietary patterns, and, in general, have chosen rather carefree attitudes toward nutrition. Medical science asserts that the benefits of proper eating habits, established early in life, have influenced the ability to: concentrate, think on a higher plane, enjoy physical well being, and maintain good health. On the contrary, improper eating habits, established early in life, serve to increase the chance of heart disease, hypertension, …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This research is a case study of a former IV drug user, male, aged 37, who was diagnosed with AIDS two years previous to the beginning of the study. The subject and five individuals from his family and close circle were interviewed to investigate, assess, and evaluate how the experience of contracting AIDS had impacted his physical, social, emotional, sexual, and spiritual health. Open-ended interviews covering the five dimensions of health were conducted, and a 10-point Likert scale was employed from a before-and-after AIDS perspective. Results of analysis of statistical data showed a significant decrease (< .0005) in physical health of the subject and a significant increase (< .005) in his spiritual health. Sexual health was reported to have the greatest standard deviation. Qualitative analysis of the interview data indicated the subject had experienced growth in the social and emotional dimensions of health, but this was not confirmed by analysis of statistical data.
