In a time of rapidly changing medical information, practitioners must have learning skills that enable them to be effective life-long learners. A part of an examination of a final clinical internship for rehabilitation professionals was a pre-post measure of learner self-direction and self-determination. Two instruments, the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS) and the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS- reported as Self-Determination Index (SDI) were used with a sample of Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) and Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) students. Pre-testing occurred just prior to and post-testing just after the subjects’ final clinical assignments. Both groups increased mean scores from …

An Application Of Acceptance And Commitment Therapy As It Relates To Children, Hannah Thompson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

This paper expounds upon a modern therapy which has emerged as an effective, albeit less conventional, mode for the treatment of people with Obsessive-compulsive Disorder (OCD). Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT, is a therapy based on the premise that an effective way of coping with unwanted cognitions, such as those present in OCD, is for one to focus on life ideals and values. This approach contrasts with the conventional method of remedying the symptoms of a mental disorder such as OCD before pursuing life goals. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy has several dimensions which will be discussed.

Often the lines are blurred between what is in the best interest of an athlete’s health and well-being and what it takes to win.

Too Much Puff, Not Enough Push? Surf Lifeguard Simulated Cpr Performance, Kevin Moran, Jonathon Webber

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The purpose of this paper is to report on the technical competency of volunteer surf lifeguards to perform CPR on a manikin in light of their lifeguard experience, age, and gender. The CPR skills of surf lifeguards on patrol at the beginning of the 2010-11 summer season were tested on manikins by observation of CPR procedures and electronic recording of compression and ventilation skills. Almost all lifeguards (n=252) made the appropriate initial checks for responsiveness (98%). Compression skills were generally performed accurately with few technical errors (such as incomplete release). Most lifeguards (87%) over-ventilated the lungs (> 600ml) on each …

The purpose of the study was to determine if BMI health report cards impacted parent's knowledge or actions regarding their child's health, and to determine if parents accurately perceive their child as underweight, normal weight, or overweight according to the child's BMI assessment .The questionnaire was developed with the help of physical educators, pediatricians, and exercise scientists, and was previously used in a study conducted by Michael Carnes (2011). This study focused on the relationship between student success in a long-term weight loss immersion treatment program and parent participation in the program; parent participation is defined as engaging in similar healthy behaviors at home while their child is in the program including (1) parents also striving to achieve or maintain a healthy weight; (2) parents self-monitoring of weight loss behaviors/healthy habits; (3) parents reducing/eliminating high fat foods in the home and increasing nonfat/low fat foods in the home; (4) parents improving family support in the home; and (5) parents facilitating healthy family functioning in the home.

This study was designed to examine the factors that contribute to student persistence into athletic training education programs (ATEPs). The researcher also gauged prospective athletic training students' perceptions on experiences that contributed to their decision to either apply or not apply to ATEPs.

Invited study participants included all freshmen prospective athletic training students who were enrolled in the Athletic Training Introductory course/s at three participating CAATE-accredited ATEPs with a secondary admissions process occurring in the fall. This study investigated the relationships between body mass index (BMI), stress, physical activity, and academic achievement among middle childhood students. The researcher used a mixed-methods research design. The general population for this study was composed of students at one of the district's intermediate schools.

The sample included 680 students from a small, suburban intermediate school (Grades 4 [N=231], 5 [N=218], and 6 [N=231], 337 males and 343 females). The school is located in a suburban area near a large city in the southeast. OBJECTIVES: To explore how the expression of emotional support in an online breast cancer support group changes over time, and what factors predict this pattern of change.

METHODS: We conducted growth curve modeling with data collected from 192 participants in an online breast cancer support group within the Comprehensive Health Enhancement Support System (CHESS) during a 24-week intervention period.

RESULTS: Individual expression of emotional support tends to increase over time for the first 12 weeks of the intervention, but then decrease slightly with time after that. In addition, we found that age, living situation, comfort level with computer and the …

Rodgers’ method of evolutionary concept analysis was used to provide a contextual view of the concept to identify attributes, antecedents, and consequences of virtual collaboration. A sense of community and respect for others, which prevails in the elementary grades, seems more subdued among middle-schoolers as competition and the struggle for independence becomes part of the hidden curriculum. Adolescent girls especially struggle to imitate what developmental psychologists suggest is necessary at this age: independence and disconnection from others.
