Low Intensity Resistance Exercise Training With Blood Flow Restriction: Insight Into Cardiovascular Function, And Skeletal Muscle Hypertrophy In Humans, Song-Young Park, Yi Sub Kwak, Andrew Harveson, Joshua C. Weavil, Kook E. Seo

Health and Kinesiology Faculty Publications

Attenuated functional exercise capacity in elderly and diseased populations is a common problem, and stems primarily from physical inactivity. Decreased function and exercise capacity can be restored by maintaining muscular strength and mass, which are key factors in an independent and healthy life. Resistance exercise has been used to prevent muscle loss and improve muscular strength and mass. However, the intensities necessary for traditional resistance training to increase muscular strength and mass may be contraindicated for some at risk populations, such as diseased populations and the elderly. Therefore, an alternative exercise modality is required. Recently, blood flow restriction (BFR) with …

Get To Know The Custodians, Todd Dagenais

UCF Forum

In 1996, I was fresh out of college living in Bay City, Michigan, and about to begin my first year as a paid volleyball coach. As many people in my situation, I was scared to death about my lack of experience and my potential inability to shape the hearts and minds of 15- to 18-year-old volleyball players. I began the process of asking experienced coaches for advice on how to approach my new endeavor.

Pre-Service And In-Service Physical Educators' Perceptions Of K-12 Student Assessment, Hunter Gray Kortan

Student Theses and Dissertations

Student assessment has become a very important and pressing issue for physical educators (Fay & Doolittle, 2002; Shaw, 2014). Despite its importance and value in affecting teaching, many physical educators disregard the practice of assessing students (Mercier & Doolittle, 2013). Proper student assessment is vital for students, parents, and professionals to understand what is important in physical education. The purpose of this study was to further examine pre-service (i.e. PETC) and in-service physical educators' perceptions of K-12 student assessment. 76 physical educators (38 pre-service & 38 in-service) from Arkansas were given a K-12 physical education student assessment questionnaire. The study …

A Qualitative Study Of A Successful Volleyball Philosophy Using Collins' Level 5 Leadership Model, Laura Evans

Theses and Graduate Projects

n recent years, successful sports coaches have been studied as to what measures success and how success is defined. While some measure success in terms of wins and losses, Concordia University-St. Paul volleyball coach Brady Starkey defines it differently. Starkey's approach to coaching relates to Jim Collins' description of a Level 5 Leader in his book "Good to Great." This study examines the approaches to successful leadership as it is reflected in athletic coaching and the significant relationship between Collins' Level 5 Leadership Model and Starkey's leadership philosophy. Under Starkey, the CU volleyball team has won seven consecutive national championships …

Creating A Healthier Campus: A Report On The Effectiveness Of Nsu’S “Slimming With The Sharks” Wellness Program, Corey Peacock, Tobin Silver, Pradeep Vanguri

Quadrivium: A Journal of Multidisciplinary Scholarship

With a recent increase in college obesity rates, it is imperative to assess the effectiveness of campus-wide fitness programs while encouraging other institutes of higher education to do so. It is presently uncertain whether these programs are advantageous or disadvantageous for improving campus-wide obesity rates; therefore, assessing campus-wide fitness programs and reporting results may bring awareness to college campus obesity rates and clarify a solution to the problem. NSU’s RecPlex offered “Slimming with the Sharks,” a structured, multiple-component, weight loss initiative available to all students, faculty, and staff. The following is a brief report of “Slimming with the Sharks” data …
