Cerebrovascular Dysfunction Is Related To Depressive Symptom Severity In Young Adults, Rauchelle E. Richey, John Akins, Jeremiah C. Campbell, Erika F.H. Saunders, R Matthew Brothers, Jody L. Greaney

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Cerebral vasodilatory responsiveness is blunted in older adults (~70 yrs) with depressive disorders and is thought to contribute to the link between depressive symptomology and increased risk for neurocognitive (e.g., dementia) and cerebral vascular (e.g., stroke) diseases. In young adults with major depressive disorder (MDD), peripheral vascular endothelial dysfunction is present and graded in relation to the severity of depressive symptoms; however, to date, limited investigations have examined cerebral vasodilatory function in young otherwise healthy adults with MDD. PURPOSE: We tested the hypothesis that cerebral vasodilatory responsiveness to a hypercapnic stimulus would be blunted in young otherwise healthy adults …

The Relation Between Cognitive Function And Cerebral Vasodilatory Reactivity In Young Adults With Major Depressive Disorder, Salwa Shoaib, Rauchelle E. Richey, Sherri M. Pham, John D. Akins, Dahlia Mukherjee, Erika F.H. Saunders, R Matthew Brothers, Jody L. Greaney

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Major depressive disorder (MDD) has been associated with an elevated risk of developing neurocognitive diseases (e.g., dementia). Although the precise neurobiological mechanisms remain incompletely understood, cerebrovascular dysfunction is thought to directly contribute, at least in part, to impairments in cognitive function. Cerebral vasodilatory reactivity to a hypercapnic stimulus is blunted in older adults with MDD compared to age-matched non-depressed adults. Further, impaired cerebral vasodilation has been linked to reduced cognitive activity in older adults with depression. However, to date, limited studies have examined the relation between cognitive function and cerebrovascular function in otherwise healthy young adults with MDD. PURPOSE: …

Heart Rate Variability Responses To Exercise In Mid-Spectrum Chronic Kidney Disease, Matthew Peterson, Jeffrey S. Forsse, Zacharias Papadakis, Peter Grandjean

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a measure of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity, and decreased HRV is associated with many cardiovascular conditions. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by a decrease in renal function and may be associated with ANS imbalances in the renal vasculature. Low HRV is associated with CKD incidence. Exercise is able to alter HRV by modulating the ANS. The effect of exercise on HRV in mid-spectrum CKD patients remains understudied. PURPOSE: To determine the effect of steady-state exercise (SSE) and high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) on post-exercise HRV in patients with stage 3 or 4 CKD. …

Attempting To Acutely Manipulate Ground Contact Time Imbalances Impairs Running Economy, Broderick L. Dickerson, Eric J. Jones, Dani D. Willis, Dustin P. Joubert

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Running economy (RE) is a key performance determinant. Biomechanical markers have been linked to RE, including ground contact time (GCT), cadence, and vertical oscillation (VO). Recently, we showed a strong relationship between GCT imbalances and RE. Because these markers can be tracked real-time with consumer-wearable devices, runners now have access to instant feedback concerning their mechanics. PURPOSE: Determine if attempting to correct GCT imbalances real-time alters mechanics and RE. METHODS: 7 recreational runners (38 ± 15 years, 24.7 ± 2.8 kg/m2, 5 male) completed 2, 10-minute running trials (9.65 km/hr) on separate days. For both trials, subjects ran …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Recovery has long been an important training variable, receiving increased attention within the scientific literature. While there has been considerable attention to intersession recovery, less is known about optimizing intrasession recovery. Additionally, growing evidence suggest women may experience relatively less fatigue with greater acute recovery as opposed to men when exercising at similar intensities. However, relatively little is known regarding the impact of self-regulated within session recovery between men and women during resistance training. PURPOSE: Therefore, the purpose of the research is to examine the sex specific responses to perceptually regulated work-to-rest ratios during strength training. METHODS: Participants (n …

No Changes In Appetite Stimulating Hormones Following Swimming And Cycling Exercise Interventions, Brandon G. Fico, Mohammed Alkatan, Yuzi Zhang, Hirofumi Tanaka

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Swimming is a favorable and ideal modality of exercise for individuals with obesity and arthritis as it encompasses a minimal weight-bearing stress and a reduced heat load. However, the available evidence indicates that regular swimming may not be effective in reducing body weight and body fatness. A current hypothesis is that exercise in cold water somehow stimulates appetite. PURPOSE: We determined the effect of swimming exercise training on fasting concentrations of ghrelin, insulin, leptin, and peptide YY in obese individuals with osteoarthritis. Cycling training was included as a non-weight bearing land-based comparison group. METHODS: Thirty-nine obese participants with …

Relationship Between Muscular Performance Changes And Increases In Body Mass During Overfeeding Plus Resistance Training, Christian Rodriguez, Robert W. Smith, Matthew T. Stratton, Patrick S. Harty, Baylor A. Johnson, Jacob R. Dellinger, Marqui L. Benavides, Bradley Vincent, Abegale D. Williams, Sarah J. White, Grant M. Tinsley

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Two critical components of muscular performance are muscular strength (e.g., the maximal load that can be lifted for a given exercise) and muscular endurance (e.g., the maximal number of repetitions that can be performed at a given load). When seeking improvements in muscular performance, it is common to employ nutritional strategies that create an energy surplus and a resultant gain in body mass. Varying rates of body mass gain are often prescribed to optimize training adaptations, including improvements in muscular performance; however, the relationship between rate of body mass gain and muscular performance improvements, if any, is not entirely clear. …
