Is Muscle Fatigue Associated With Increased Cerebral Oxygenation During Resistance Training?, Aqueen Lenon, Amelia Ybarra, Stefan Keslacy
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Fatigue limits performance during resistance training by directly impairing muscle function and brain activity. Does muscle fatigue correspond to changes in brain activity? PURPOSE: The purpose of the study is to determine the relatipnship between brain and muscle oxygenation during exercise-induced muscle fatigue between sedentary and athletes. METHODS: Eight participants, four sedentary and four athletes, were included. The protocol was four sets of twelve repetitions of the bench press, with the weight adjusted to induce failure on the final set. Oxygenation levels in the left prefrontal cortex and the right triceps muscle were continuously monitored using near-infrared spectroscopy …

Effects Of Blood Flow Restriction Training On Body Composition Parameters, Daniel Orr, Christina Paulazzo, Jaeden Danko, Joseph Le, Luke Liccini, Miguel Vazquez, Todd Shoepe
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Blood flow occlusion with restriction training (BFR) promotes muscle hypertrophy and strength while exercising at lower intensities than traditional training. BFR involves cuffs that restrict venous blood flow while permitting arterial flow to stimulate signaling pathways associated with metabolic stress and muscle fatigue. PURPOSE: The aim was to determine the effects of BFR on total fat mass (TFM), percent body fat (%BF), and total lean mass (TLM). METHODS: 42 college-aged participants (20.6±1.9 years, 23.4± 3.3 kg/m2) were separated into a control (n=18) or BFR group (n=24). Whole-body dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was performed before and after the BFR …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Common footwear for field-based athletes often includes cleats, which are typically tight and restrictive. This could reduce blood flow to the foot, potentially compromising the health of structures like the plantar fascia and lead to fasciopathy. PURPOSE: Investigate the influence of wearing cleats on reduced blood flow to the foot via the posterior tibial artery (PTA) after exercise, comparing shod versus unshod conditions. METHODS: 19 individuals (female n= 7; age= 22.7 ±2.0 yrs; weight= 70.3 ±8.8 kg; height= 175.1 ±8.5 cm) with no lower extremity injuries completed a 40-minute data collection session on two separate days, one week …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Human motor control and physiological responses to virtual activities have been largely unquantified. The aim of this study was to compare virtual (VR) and outdoor (OUT) walks of the same distance. There is a growing need to understand how humans experience different modes of virtual activity, so appropriate recommendations for virtual exercise can be given and improve virtual experiences. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to measure and compare how individuals walk in virtual reality (VR) compared to real life, as well as to evaluate energy expenditure and substrate utilization in the form of fats and carbohydrates. METHODS …

The Farmers Handle Loaded Carry Increases Peripheral Blood Pressure But The Zercher Carry Increases Vascular Stiffness, Brianna Wheelock, Natalya Tasevski, Miranda Grzywaczewski, Marissa Flannery, Deborah L. Feairheller
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Governing bodies continue to recommend both aerobic and resistance training as part of lifestyle modification, and it is known that exercise is medicine. Load carriage is an activity of daily living, can be an occupational risk, and is a popular method of resistance training. The type of carry could be related to different vascular responses, which may be related to cardiovascular risk. When professionals recommend exercise programs, consideration of the vascular responses in relation to type of carry is important in order to reduce potential risk. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess vascular health and blood …

Comparing Vascular Measures In Active And Inactive Females With Anterior Or Lateral T-Wave Inversions, Natalya Tasevski, Brianna Wheelock, Deborah L. Feairheller
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The presence of T-wave inversions in anterior or lateral leads on an electrocardiogram (ECG) can indicate a range of conditions, from benign to serious, such as myocardial ischemia. While ECG is not a routine screening tool for athletes, and T-wave inversions in anterior or lateral leads are not typically used as the primary diagnostic tool, integrating this with noninvasive vascular health measures like Augmentation Index (Alx@75) and Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) could provide valuable insights. Both Alx@75 and PWV are measures of arterial stiffness and thus related to cardiovascular risk. Cardiac screening in active and athletic females is under-researched, so …

Aerobic Fitness Outperforms Body Composition In Predicting Acft Scores Among Rotc Cadets And Active Military Personnel, Megan Bratetic, Jake Laufenberg, Kaitlyn Wabakken, Anthony Acevedo, Spencer Posey Sgt, Zachary Zeigler
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The use of body composition to determine readiness for military engagement has been contentious. Body composition is just one of many variables that may impact a soldier's readiness to serve. Aerobic capacity also predicts ACFT scores. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to determine if high aerobic fitness is a better predictor of ACFT scores in ROTC cadets and active military than body composition. METHODS: ROTC and active military cadets completed the 6-event ACFT (3-repetition maximum trap-bar deadlift, standing power toss, hand-release pushups, sprint-drag-carry shuttle run, plank, and 2-mile run. The cadets were invited into the laboratory …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Muscle disuse and subsequent muscle loss are common consequences of injury. Various forms of skeletal muscle mechanical stimulation have been found to be helpful in preserving muscle mass and function during disuse. Recently, percussive massage devices have become popular devices for the application of mechanical stimulation. PURPOSE: This study investigated the potential benefits of percussive massage to mitigate muscle loss during a period of limb immobilization. METHODS: Seventeen healthy young adults (ages 18-35) underwent a 10-day period of immoblization of the right leg. Participants were randomly assigned to either a percussive massage group (n=9), receiving twice-daily 20-minute sessions on …

Speed Has No Correlation To Muscle Volume Of Hip Flexors And Tibialis Anterior Muscles In Division L Football Athletes, Isaiah B. Guymon, Malorie Wilwand, Steven P. Allen, B. Brett Mortensen, Aaron W. Johnson
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
In American football (AF) a desirable trait is sprint speed that leads to success such as increased touchdowns, yards gained, and number of sacks. Researchers suggest training programs can improve an athletes’ sprint speed. Considering the swing to stance phases, the hip flexors (HF) and tibialis anterior (TA) may impact an athletes’ speed. The HF initiates the swing phase, while the TA muscle dorsiflexes the foot allowing the toes to clear the ground. PURPOSE: To determine if there is a correlation between collegiate football athlete's speed and the muscle volume (MV) of HF and TA muscles. METHODS: This study …
Females Who Have Undergone Acl Reconstruction Exhibit Altered Patellofemoral Joint Alignment And Reduced Contact: Implications For Early Onset Osteoarthritis, Thomas Demirjian, Olivia Tu, Gillian Northrup, Christopher Powers
Females Who Have Undergone Acl Reconstruction Exhibit Altered Patellofemoral Joint Alignment And Reduced Contact: Implications For Early Onset Osteoarthritis, Thomas Demirjian, Olivia Tu, Gillian Northrup, Christopher Powers
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Reconstruction is the gold standard treatment for those who have experienced a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament. Despite advancements in surgical technique and rehabilitation, a negative consequence of anterior ligament reconstruction (ACLr) is early onset osteoarthritis of the tibiofemoral joint and patellofemoral joint (PFJ). There is evidence that altered patella alignment may be contributory to early onset patellofemoral joint osteoarthritis. A negative consequence of patella malalignment is that contact between the patella and trochlea could be reduced, thereby exposing the joint to elevated stress (force per unit area). PURPOSE: The purpose of the current study was two-fold: 1) …

Three Years Of Football Play Maintains Nordbord Eccentric Hamstring Strength In Division I Athletes, Josh Vandenakker, Malorie Wilwand, B. Brett Mortensen, A. Wayne Johnson
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
In American football, the development of strength, power, speed, and conditioning is crucial throughout a season and college career to enhance athletes’ performance and prevent injury. Eccentric knee flexor strength is important for optimal athletic performance and injury risk reduction; therefore, assessment of eccentric hamstring strength (EHS) is critical. PURPOSE: To evaluate the EHS of a Division I football team and its change or continuity across multiple years. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of HAMIR, 95 Division I football players (Age: 20.94 ± 2.11yrs; Ht: 1.88 ± 0.06m; Wt: 102.15 ± 17.94kg) had their EHS measured using the NordBord. …

Determining Model Fit For Eccentric Hamstrings Strength: A Bayesian Approach, Lee J Hinkle, James D. Mead, Carson Bates, Aaron W. Johnson
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The Bayesian paradigm holds that previous knowledge or expertise (“prior”) and data-driven measurements (“likelihoods”) can produce an outcome (“posterior”) which can, in turn, be used as the prior in a new iteration of analysis and learning. In a wider project, we are undertaking to measure hamstrings strength, physical activity level, and ultrasound (US) and MRI characteristics of more than 200 participants ages 18+. PURPOSE: Here we aim to develop a model that will predict eccentric hamstrings strength as measured by Nordbord based on variables available in both surveys (IPAQ) and US for use as a starting point for our …
Measuring Fatigue After Singles Pickleball Tournament Play, Margaret J. Falknor, Steven Kim, James Annesi, George Beckham, Eric Martin
Measuring Fatigue After Singles Pickleball Tournament Play, Margaret J. Falknor, Steven Kim, James Annesi, George Beckham, Eric Martin
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Previously, we measured fatigue from one doubles pickleball match, multiple recreational doubles pickleball matches, and a nine-game doubles pickleball tournament. We found no evidence of neuromuscular fatigue in any of these scenarios. Therefore, doubles pickleball play may not be fatiguing enough to decrease jump performance. Singles pickleball matches may be more fatiguing than doubles play, because players must cover the court and return the ball without a partner. PURPOSE: Our goal was to determine if singles pickleball play would induce neuromuscular fatigue. METHODS: We included healthy adult pickleball players that had no lower body injuries within the past …

Downhill Dilemma: Analyzing Joint Force On Variable Speed And Gradient, Ulises Hernandez, Ezrie Pace, Kaeley Loader, Nathan Ramirez, Megan Nielsen, Michael Bohne
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Movement on declined slopes poses unique mechanical stresses when compared to level surfaces. Both downhill (DH) running and walking have seen large amounts of load force absorption on the knee (French 2018; Abe et.al., 2011) with some forces possibly being distributed to the hip and ankle joints. Though research is limited about lower extremity joint kinematics across all three joints. PURPOSE: To better understand the joint forces placed on the hip, knee, and ankle with variable speed and decline gradient METHODS: Nine participants (5 male and 4 female; Age = 24.09 ± 2.81 yrs; Weight = 75.12 ± 13.67 kg; …

Influence Of Region Of Interest Size On Vastus Lateralis Shear Wave Velocity In Individuals With Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Jonathan L. Cardon, Brian W. Noehren, Mckenzie White
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
PURPOSE: Shear wave elastography (SWE) is an emerging tool for estimating passive muscle stiffness via shear wave velocity (SWV). However, the lack of standardized collection and processing methods limits its clinical utility. One key factor in SWV analyses is the region of interest (ROI), which varies in size across the literature. Individuals post-anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) show changes in muscle quality, making it plausible that ROI size could influence SWE measurements in this population. METHODS: Twenty individuals post-ACLR participated (11M/9F, age = 19 ± 2 years, time since surgery = 5 ± 5 months, body mass index = …

Implicit biases are unconscious, internally held beliefs shaped by cultural norms, societal structures, and personal experiences and are often related to societal constructs such as race, gender, age, body shape, and ability. Although evidence has demonstrated that fitness professionals possess both explicit and implicit weight biases, biases based on age, gender, skin color, and ability level have not been studied. PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to explore the influence of social identity (e.g., age, skin-tone, weight, disability) and industry role on implicit biases in fitness professionals. METHODS: Participants (n=296) were randomly assigned two implicit association tests …
Pilot Study Of Neuromuscular Fatigue After Doubles Pickleball Tournament, Matthew Ritchey, Margaret Falknor, George Beckham, Eric Martin
Pilot Study Of Neuromuscular Fatigue After Doubles Pickleball Tournament, Matthew Ritchey, Margaret Falknor, George Beckham, Eric Martin
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The number of people playing pickleball has grown exponentially for several years in a row, and likewise, the absolute number of injuries due to pickleball have increased. Examining fatigue effects of playing may be a first step to determining injury prevention and game or tournament management strategies. However, in our previous work, we could not detect fatigue after playing multiple recreational games of doubles pickleball. PURPOSE: The purpose of this pilot study was to examine fatigue effects from playing a doubles pickleball tournament. METHODS: Five young men (ages 22-45) tested their force production, as measured by performing a …

Sex Differences In Cardiac Decompensation Under Moderate Hypovolemic Stress During Exercise, Yusuf I. Rizk, Daisy Hernandez Valadez, Jacob B. Sievers, Youanaa A. Gendy, Areum K. Jensen
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Due to higher metabolic demands to the contracting muscles there are significant increases in cardiac output (CO) and peripheral vascular adjustments, thus resulting in an increased arterial blood pressure (BP) during exercise. In general women have higher heart rate (HR), lower stroke volume (SV) and CO compared to men even though they change in a similar fashion during exercise. In response to central hypovolemia, triggered by lower body negative pressure (LBNP), women appeared to have lower tolerance compared to men. However, how women exhibit cardiac alterations to sustained LBNP and exercise differently is unclear. PURPOSE: To investigate sex differences in …

Does Lower Body Negative Pressure Have A Differential Effect On Blood Pressure And Blood Flow During Exercise In Women?, Jacob B. Sievers, Youanaa A. Gendy, Yusuf I. Rizk, Daisy Hernandez Valadez, Areum K. Jensen
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
In response to central hypovolemia, triggered by lower body negative pressure (LBNP), women appeared to have lower tolerance compared to men. In addition, women exhibit blunted pressor responses to exercise compared to men, while cardiac output is increased in a similar fashion. Nonetheless, redistribution of blood flow from central to contracting muscles is required to meet higher metabolic demands during exercise in both men and women. Thus, we thought to investigate the differential effect of LBNP during exercise in men and women. PURPOSE: To determine the role of LBNP on redistributing blood flow from central to contracting muscles during moderate …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Reduced exertion high intensity interval training (REHIT) is an extremely time-efficient version of sprint interval training requiring two to three 20 s “all-out” sprints within a 10 min exercise session. Findings from laboratories in the UK (Metcalfe et al. 2012) and Canada (Gillen et al. 2016) show significant increases in VO2max, glycemic control, and body composition in inactive adults completing 6 - 12 wk of cycling based REHIT. A prior study (Astorino et al. 2020) in 85 adults having diverse VO2max values shows positive affective valence despite substantial blood lactate (BLa) accumulation. Whether REHIT can be …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Chronic ankle instability (CAI) individuals have ankle swelling as a residual symptom. Joint swelling following musculoskeletal injuries inhibits full neural activation of muscles, known as arthrogenic muscle inhibition. However, little is known about the effects of ankle swelling on dynamic postural control in CAI individuals. PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of ankle swelling on dynamic postural control in CAI individuals. METHODS: A total of 45 participants were recruited from a university population: 15 CAI individuals with swelling (swelling), 15 CAI individuals without swelling (non-swelling), and 15 healthy controls (control). All participants were measured ankle swelling using a figure …
