Cowley, Merrill Funk, James W. Navalta Facsm, Marcus M. Lawrence
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Wearable technology is again the top fitness trend from ACSM for 2024. Our lab recently found that bicep-worn devices (Polar Verity Sense) are valid for measuring average/maximal heart rate (HR) but are not valid for estimating energy expenditure (EE) during acute resistance exercise training (RT). We postulated that the errors may have been due to the device’s algorithms assuming higher intensity during RT, but no study has directly tested these outcomes with various RT intensities. PURPOSE: To determine the concurrent validity of identical Polar Verity Sense bicep-devices to record valid measures of average and maximal HR as well as estimated …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Hamstring strength and explosiveness is imperative for collegiate American football players to perform at the highest level. Understanding the respective correlations, based on players positions, between eccentric hamstring strength (HS) and body weight (BW) among football players may help coaches and players to develop strength protocols required for specific positions. We hypothesize that increasing BW will result in increased eccentric HS. PURPOSE: This study aims to examine the relationship between football players BW and their max eccentric HS. METHODS: As a secondary analysis from the HAMIR study, 95 (age: 21.4 ± 2.00 yr; Ht: 187.7 ± 6.17 cm; …

The Feasibility Of High Intensity Interval Training In Individuals With Post-Stroke Aphasia, Ferdaus Ghafury, Lauren J. Cervantes, Christian J. Thompson
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Exercise boosts physical health in clinical populations and high intensity interval training (HIIT) has often been found to improve fitness to a greater and faster degree than moderate intensity exercise. However, there is a lack of research on the feasibility and safety HIIT in chronic stroke survivors. PURPOSE: We studied the safety and feasibility of Aphasia Physical EXercise (APEX), a HIIT program for those with post- stroke aphasia. We measured feasibility by: avoidance of adverse events (e.g., injuries), high adherence rates and participants' ability to meet the prescribed exercise intensity during individual training sessions. We also assessed APEX’s effect …

Comparison Of Lower Limb Sagittal Plane Kinematics And Kinetics Between Theia Markerless And Conventional Marker-Based Double Limb Squat Analysis In Patients Post Aclr, Cole Whitelaw, Willa Ma, Jiaqi Wang, Grace Choi, Susan Sigward
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Markerless motion capture (MoCap) may offer a promising advancement in the assessment of limb kinematics and kinetics, providing enhanced convenience and efficiency for movement assessments compared to traditional marker-based MoCap systems lowering the barrier for access into clinical biomechanics testing. In clinical contexts, particularly when evaluating lower limb kinematics and kinetics in populations with conditions like anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLr), it is crucial for a system to accurately detect subtle changes in movement indicative of injury or pathology. PURPOSE: Determine concurrent validity of kinematic and kinetic data collected using marker and markerless MoCap technologies during a double limb squat …

Fatigue Effects On Shoulder And Elbow Joint Loading During The Tennis Serve, Alexander "Sasha" Rovinsky, Sean Chen, Sam Rosenkranz, Christiane O'Hara, Scott Hazelwood
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
An effective tennis serve is one of the most crucial skills an experienced athlete will implement to gain a decisive advantage in a match. It is an incredibly dynamic, powerful chain of movements classified into preparation, acceleration and follow-through phases. Consequently, the peak physical intensity of these accelerated motions put tennis players at increased risk for shoulder injuries. PURPOSE: To assess how tennis serving arm, shoulder joint forces, shoulder rotation moment, kinematics, and muscle activity are affected by match play induced fatigue. We tested the hypothesis that tennis-related fatigue will have a significant effect on tennis serving arm and …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Impaired gait is detrimental to the overall quality of life in people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Characteristic shuffling and freezing gait patterns can be ameliorated through auditory cueing methods. Internal mental singing is more effective than external cueing methods such as singing aloud. The absence of small laryngeal vibrations could be the reasoning behind these improvements. PURPOSE: This feasibility study aimed to determine whether humming or whispering is a more effective cueing method for improving Parkinsonian gait and extrapolate the effects of the vocal cords on PD gait. METHODS: Participants walked 28m under four randomized cueing conditions: no …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Academic performance, financial burdens and familial pressures are reasons perceived stress is prevalent in university students, especially in first-generation college students (FGCS). In addition, female students often experience more stress than their male counterparts and are more likely to ask for help. Mindfulness Meditation (MM), the nonjudgmental awareness of one’s emotions, thoughts, and external stimuli in the present moment, has been shown to decrease pain sensitivity in long-term meditators and improve cognition and reduce stress acutely. The research on the benefits of a single session of MM or the effects of MM in female FGCS are lacking. PURPOSE: This study …

Exercise Acutely Modulates Mitochondrial Function In Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells, Morgan K. Daniel, Clover Crenshaw, Antonio Ballardo, Kayla Kumagai, Robert Musci
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Exercise trained individuals have greater immune system function, which may be attributed to enhanced peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) function. Exercise training is a potent stimulator of mitochondrial adaptation, which may explain improvements in immune system function. However, the mechanisms by which exercise acutely modulates PBMCs to lead toward beneficial adaptations remain unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this pilot was to test the hypothesis that exercise acutely modulates PBMC mitochondrial function. METHODS: Ten participants (eight males, two females, 22.81 ± 4.49 years) had blood drawn prior to a bout of exercise that included a graded exercise test (VO2max: …

Sex differences in pulmonary, cardiovascular, or neuromuscular function may affect the development of neuromuscular fatigue and the primary mechanism of exercise intolerance. Unlike the standard cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET), the musculo-cardio-pulmonary exercise test (mCPET) uses isokinetic power (Piso) to directly assess neuromuscular performance and fatigue. PURPOSE: : To examine sex differences in neuromuscular performance and fatigue during mCPET. We hypothesize that compared to females, males will have greater power (baseline Piso), lower capacity to aerobically support their available muscle power (lower aerobic power index; API), greater reduction in Piso per watt of work performed (higher fatigue index; FI), be …

Pennation angle (PA) represents the angle between muscle fibers and the force-generating axis of the muscle. Blood flow resistance (BFR) training involves the occlusion of venous blood flow in working muscles to promote muscular growth signaling with reduced training intensity. PURPOSE: The purpose is to examine if hypertrophy through BFR may result in PA alterations to accommodate muscle fiber volume alterations. METHODS: Males (N=11, 20.35±1.59 yrs, 177.97±9.22 cm, 83.66±20.69 kg), and females (N=12, 23.20±9.53 yrs, 164.60±6.42 cm, 63.2±10.65 kg) participated in resistance training with BFR for 3 times/week, for 8 weeks at 60% occlusion pressure, at 30% of one-repetition maximum …

Previous studies have shown that the transition from cycling to running is less biomechanically efficient than a stand-alone run, which makes triathletes more susceptible to injury and inhibits performance. While several studies have examined the effects of cycling on running gait, little is known about its impact on walking gait. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine any changes in muscle recruitment and hip and knee kinetics and kinematics during walking of endurance athletes under cycling-induced fatigue conditions. METHODS: Six college-aged women performed two conditions walking across force plates, heel strike to heel strike, with their …
