Legal, Moral, And Transformational Leadership For Our School Districts And Universities, Pauline M. Sampson, Kerry L. Roberts Nov 2018

Legal, Moral, And Transformational Leadership For Our School Districts And Universities, Pauline M. Sampson, Kerry L. Roberts

School Leadership Review

This current issue of the School Leadership Review has a wide variety of topics addressing the legal, moral, and transformational leadership for our school district administrators and university personnel. The legal issues of bullying and transportation liability are important to the safety and welfare of our students and staff. As administrators develop policies and procedures, there needs to be careful consideration to legal and moral implications that will guide their district. These many legal issues would be minimal if the leaders led with honesty and integrity. Transformational leadership has this honesty and integrity woven throughout its tenets.

Supporting New School Leaders Through Mentoring, Lisa A. Bertrand, David Stader, Sherry Copeland Nov 2018

Supporting New School Leaders Through Mentoring, Lisa A. Bertrand, David Stader, Sherry Copeland

School Leadership Review

Mentoring may best be defined as “a process where one person provides individual support and challenge to another professional (Bush, 2009, p.379). The importance of mentoring new teachers and administrators has long been recognized. For example, since 2000 more than half of the states have passed laws requiring mentoring of new principals (Daresh, 2004; Spiro, Mattis, & Mitgang 2007). Most of these laws have required mentoring in the first two years of practice. Grissom & Harrington (2010) found under the mentorship model, a more experienced principal mentor provides the support, guidance, advice and sounding board as the new principal becomes …

Examining Superintendent Turnover Intent: A Quantitative Analysis Of The Relationship Between Exchange Commitment And The Turnover Intent Of Public School Superintendents In Texas, Johnny R. O’Connor, Jr., Vance Vaughn Nov 2018

Examining Superintendent Turnover Intent: A Quantitative Analysis Of The Relationship Between Exchange Commitment And The Turnover Intent Of Public School Superintendents In Texas, Johnny R. O’Connor, Jr., Vance Vaughn

School Leadership Review

Quality leadership in a school district is critical to school improvement (Dunlap, Li, & Kladifko, 2015; Kersten, 2009; Leithwood, Seashore, Anderson, & Wahlstom, 2004). School leaders must be capable of providing vision, focus, and support to their staff, in order to facilitate a positive working culture, and achieve sustainable academic success. Given the competitive nature and complexities of building a quality workforce, when a quality leader is hired, it is typically in the best interest of an organization to retain this talent. However, planning for employee retention requires a detailed understanding as to why an individual desires to leave their …

Perceptions Of Beginning Teachers And Mentor Teachers: Case Study Of A Campus Mentor Program, Deborah F. Spoon, Ray Thompson, Paul Tapper Nov 2018

Perceptions Of Beginning Teachers And Mentor Teachers: Case Study Of A Campus Mentor Program, Deborah F. Spoon, Ray Thompson, Paul Tapper

School Leadership Review

Attrition of teachers is a concern for leaders in education; teacher turnover is higher in education compared to many other occupations and professions, especially in the first years on the job (Ingersoll 2003; Ingersoll & Perda, 2010). Nearly half a million teachers leave the education field every year (Alliance for Excellent Education, 2014) while the recruitment and training of teachers is costing the United States about $2 billion each year (Rizga, 2015). The high turnover places a financial burden on districts resulting in decreased resources for books, materials, and staff development of teachers; additionally, replacing teachers can disrupt the instructional …

The Predictability Between Demographic And Institutional Variables Of Texas High School Principals And Their Attitudes Towards Parental Involvement, Michael D. Milstead, Nicole Walters, Lillian Poats Nov 2018

The Predictability Between Demographic And Institutional Variables Of Texas High School Principals And Their Attitudes Towards Parental Involvement, Michael D. Milstead, Nicole Walters, Lillian Poats

School Leadership Review

Over the past decades, the public school enterprise has been saturated with a myriad of social, political and academic ills. Problems such as reductions in state and federal funding, double digit percent student drop-outs, misidentification of students with learning disabilities, insufficient development of language skills in limited or non-English speaking students, shortage of highly qualified classroom teachers, unsafe schools, and students lacking college readiness are a few barriers to a student’s success in school. Perhaps the most disturbing of these issues, however, is the high percentage of students from low income households who are not meeting academic standards on statewide …

Principles And Principals: Leveraging K-12 Principal Training And Evaluation Standards To Support Environmental, Ecological, And Sustainability Education, Rodolfo Rincones-Delgado, Anthony D. Feig Nov 2018

Principles And Principals: Leveraging K-12 Principal Training And Evaluation Standards To Support Environmental, Ecological, And Sustainability Education, Rodolfo Rincones-Delgado, Anthony D. Feig

School Leadership Review

Ecoliteracy is the pedagogical grouping of environmental science, ecology and sustainability studies. This paper is a policy analysis of how principal training and evaluation standards may support a principal’s building-level efforts to establish and sustain an ecoliteracy mission and curriculum in US public K-12 schools. A comparative case study of leadership standards in Texas and Michigan was conducted to support the argument that school administrator training and evaluation standards in both states can lend formal, codified support to a sufficiently determined school leader’s efforts to center the school’s mission on ecoliteracy. The limitations of this support are also discussed.

The Early Promise Of Tbri Implementation In Schools, Mark J. Reid, Angela M. Proctor, Thomas R. Brooks Nov 2018

The Early Promise Of Tbri Implementation In Schools, Mark J. Reid, Angela M. Proctor, Thomas R. Brooks

School Leadership Review

The program known as Trust Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®) began as an exploration into the detrimental behaviors of foster and adopted children placed in homes with unsuspecting caregivers who assumed their living environment would result in positive results rather than fear based emotions and behaviors. The researchers at the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development (KPICD) at Texas Christian University held summer camps for adopted children and through that work developed an intervention to meet the needs of children who had experienced trauma. KPICD identifies these young people as “children from hard places” (Purvis & Cross, 2005). Copeland et al …

Differences In Leadership Behaviors Of Principals And Success In The School Turnaround Processes, Annette Lee Nov 2018

Differences In Leadership Behaviors Of Principals And Success In The School Turnaround Processes, Annette Lee

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine leadership behaviors of principals associated with public elementary schools that were either in the school turnaround process or had already transitioned out of school academic turnaround from 2011 through 2016. Transformational leadership guided the study to determine whether leadership behaviors differed among leaders of schools associated with academic failure. School accountability data were initially gathered through the Louisiana Department of Education website. Academically unsuccessful schools (AUS) were identified. Schools that were deemed failing at least one time during the 2012-2016 timeframe were grouped as follows: (a) Group A consisted of two schools …

What Factors Influence Catholic Parents’ Choice Of School(S) For Their Child(Ren)?, Andrea R. Aiello Nov 2018

What Factors Influence Catholic Parents’ Choice Of School(S) For Their Child(Ren)?, Andrea R. Aiello

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

In 1965, the American Catholic school system had 5.66 million students, 13,296 schools and educated nearly 13% of all school-aged children. Fifty years later, Catholic school enrollments had fallen to approximately 1.93 million and a total of 6,250 schools, while more than 17% of the students enrolled in Catholic schools identified as non-Catholic. Although there appear to be several positive points of difference for selecting Catholic schools, nevertheless families are making other choices. In this exploratory study, I endeavored to understand the demographic characteristics, attitudes toward education as well as more general motivations of American Catholic parents, with a special …

Ownership And Violence Against Women Of Color Reflected Through The Lens Of Anglo Saxon Theology, Jennifer Herring, Luraine Kimmerle Nov 2018

Ownership And Violence Against Women Of Color Reflected Through The Lens Of Anglo Saxon Theology, Jennifer Herring, Luraine Kimmerle

Violence Against Women conference

In the American cultural mind, white bodies have been upheld as ideal. In addition, the male body has received praise, greater access, and safety on the streets, in business, education, and the wider world. In the arena of higher education students tend to discover how their personal sociocultural perspective informs ownership of the lack thereof. It is through this reality that the idea of ownership is seen when it comes to violence inflicted on/received by women. When race is included in the violence against women dialogue we uncover the branches of Anglo-Saxon Exceptionalism, planted by the theologies and worldviews of …

I Am Complicated, And So Is My Blackness: A Trifecta Exploration Of Educational Spaces And Identity Development, Kala Burrell-Craft

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Myriads of research studies have been written over the past 20 years highlighting the racial gap and disparities in educational opportunities and outcomes between Black and White students, but as revealed in a review of the literature, more studies need to be conducted that examine the intersection of race, space/place, and racial identity development. Using critical race theory as a framework, this study comprised of three separate, but related essays that explore the function of educational spaces in which Black Americans navigate, grow, and develop as it intersects with race, space/place, and identity development. Essay one is a critical narrative …

The Persistence And Attrition Of Online Learners, Casey Graham Brown Nov 2018

The Persistence And Attrition Of Online Learners, Casey Graham Brown

School Leadership Review

Student retention is a growing concern as more university programs move toward online learning. With a continual increase in online program choices, it is important to recognize course elements that affect the success of online learners (Kane, Shaw, Pang, Salley, & Snider, 2015). University professors need strategies to provide assistance for students and to decrease the number of students who fail to progress in online programs. It is important that faculty support students, but just as important that universities provide time, opportunities, and resources for such support to occur.

School Administrators As Instructional Coaches: Teachers' Trust And Perceptions Of Administrators' Capacity, Yanira Oliveras-Ortiz Nov 2018

School Administrators As Instructional Coaches: Teachers' Trust And Perceptions Of Administrators' Capacity, Yanira Oliveras-Ortiz

School Leadership Review

As the Texas Education Agency (TEA) rolls out the state-wide implementation of the new teacher evaluation system, thousands of Texas school administrators have completed the required training and have become certified appraisers under the new Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS). During the state training, participants are challenged to serve as change agents in leading the shift in thinking about teacher evaluations to embrace a teacher growth model with an instructional supervision platform. Studies have indeed found that school principals who are involved in instructional supervision have a positive impact on test scores, including a constant improvement in scores …

Educational Leadership Coaching As Professional Development, Beth Ray Nov 2018

Educational Leadership Coaching As Professional Development, Beth Ray

School Leadership Review

As the burden of school leadership continues to increase in complexity, the need for reflective, collaborative leadership surges in tandem. The collaborative approach of educational leadership coaching develops school leaders and teacher leaders into meta-cognitive, reflective practitioners. Shoho, Barnett, and Martinez (2012) posited, "Many school systems are embracing coaching as a way to influence and enhance leaders' skill development, cognitive abilities, and emotional intelligence" (p. 165). These skilled educational leaders can then seek solutions that allow for the complexity of the school systems while generating positive student outcomes, relational trust, and increased teacher efficacy.

An Analysis Of Urban School Leaders' Role In Community Support And Involvement, Mary Keller Boudreaux Nov 2018

An Analysis Of Urban School Leaders' Role In Community Support And Involvement, Mary Keller Boudreaux

School Leadership Review

While school systems have the arduous task of educating a plethora of diverse students from different backgrounds and social economic status, the task is multifaceted. Epstein (1995) argued that to successfully meet the goal of improving education for all children, there must be considerably more involvement from parents, the community, and other stakeholders working together to promote the success of all students. That is, "students learn more and succeed at higher levels when home, school, and community work together to support students' learning and development" (Epstein & Sanders, 2006, p. 87). To meet the needs of such diverse students, their …

Patterns Of Failure In Texas Urban Improvement Required Schools: An Equity Audit Expansion, John A. Branch, Melissa M. Leigh Nov 2018

Patterns Of Failure In Texas Urban Improvement Required Schools: An Equity Audit Expansion, John A. Branch, Melissa M. Leigh

School Leadership Review

The achievement gap is a concept that has long been explored in education; students of color, low socioeconomic status, those who speak languages other than English, and students labeled as special education perform lower on student achievement tests and often receive less in terms of funding and resources (Harris & Hopson, 2008). Brown (2010) stated, "As a result, these students, without realizing it, often fall into a predetermined mold designed for school failure and social inequity" (p. 2).

Filling In The Blanks, Pauline M. Sampson, Scott Bailey, Kerry L. Roberts Nov 2018

Filling In The Blanks, Pauline M. Sampson, Scott Bailey, Kerry L. Roberts

School Leadership Review

Whether you are a practitioner involved in public education, a researcher in higher education, a policymaker, a proponent of privatization, a homeschool advocate, a concerned parent, or just an anxious taxpayer, the one adjective around which we could probably build consensus to fill the blank is "uncertain," for uncertain is most certainly an apt descriptor of these times. Issues remain unsettled; courses of action remain undetermined; fundamental beliefs remain unresolved; and, emotions remain uneased. Some see a future fraught with rancor and divisiveness, while others simultaneously swell with optimism at the possibilities that lie ahead: polar opposite views in a …

Leadership Education And Development In Stem High Schools, Andrea Stuiber, Katie Berger

Staff Publications & Research

Leadership. Education. Development. How are we inspiring young adults to grow as good and ethical leaders? Leadership should not be defined by a title or label. It’s about developing the perspective, skills and personal style of the whole individual. Through the LEAD program at IMSA, we believe that leadership can be learned through discussion and application. Thus, we have designed a year long course that takes an intricate look at various definitions, theories, models, and conceptualizations of leadership. Students are challenged to think critically about leadership during peer-to-peer facilitated class discussions, hands-on exercises, and group work.

An Analysis Of African-American Faculty Experiences During The Tenure Process, Katrina M. Hubbard Nov 2018

An Analysis Of African-American Faculty Experiences During The Tenure Process, Katrina M. Hubbard

Dissertations

Abstract

How faculty allocate their time among research, teaching, and service, and the perceived quality of that work determines whether faculty obtain tenure or are released from the university (Bellas & Toutkoushian, 1999; Link, Swann, & Bozeman, 2008; Price & Cotten, 2006). Prior research indicated that African-American faculty comprised 4.5% of the faculty at high-activity research institutions and 3.5% of faculty at very-high-activity research institutions (The Chronicle of Higher Education Almanac 2016-2017, 2016).

The purpose of this study was to 1) document African-American faculty experiences during their tenure probationary period at PWI research institutions; 2) compare faculty experiences during the …

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The ninth grade is a transition year from middle school to high school where many students struggle to successfully navigate a new environment, new teachers and peers, new academic and behavioral expectations, and the concept of graduation requirements. This qualitative study examined the effects of academic track placement, and student levels of skill and will, on successful ninth-grade completion in one New Mexico Title I high school. It also provided insight into their perceptions of the success factors and challenges that they felt impacted their ability to successfully promote to the tenth-grade, and thus, remain on-track for graduation.

Grade Span Configuration And Academic Performance For Students In Poverty: A Texas Multiyear Analysis, M. Chad Jones, John R. Slate, George W. Moore, Cynthia Martinez-Garcia Nov 2018

Grade Span Configuration And Academic Performance For Students In Poverty: A Texas Multiyear Analysis, M. Chad Jones, John R. Slate, George W. Moore, Cynthia Martinez-Garcia

School Leadership Review

Grade-span configuration refers to the range of grades within a school (Coladarci & Hancock, 2002). The debate over the benefits of one grade span configuration over the other has ensued for decades (Howley, 2002). Specific questions in this debate are (a) Which grade span configuration is most cost effective?; (b) Which grade span configuration yields the best academic achievement?; and (c) Which grade span configuration best meets the social and emotional needs of middle level children? (Howley, 2002).

Differences In Dropout Rates As A Function Of High School Size For Students In Poverty: A Texas Multiyear, Statewide Study, Amy R. Ambrose, George W. Moore, John R. Slate, Cynthia Martinez-Garcia Nov 2018

Differences In Dropout Rates As A Function Of High School Size For Students In Poverty: A Texas Multiyear, Statewide Study, Amy R. Ambrose, George W. Moore, John R. Slate, Cynthia Martinez-Garcia

School Leadership Review

Child poverty in the United States, with regard to student achievement, has grave challenges for the children who face poverty (Scott & Pressman, 2013). Not only is living in poverty associated with lower academic achievement, but student poverty is also associated with lower rates of school completion (Borg, Borg, & Stranahan, 2012; Cooper & Crosnoe, 2007; Kena et al., 2015). Consequentially, students who do not complete high school are more likely to (a) serve time in prison, (b) need government assistance, and/or ( c) die at an earlier age (Messacar & Oreopoulos, 2013). With the increasing number of children who …

Rural Superintendents' Experiences In The Application Of Principle-Centered Leadership At The Personal And Interpersonal Levels, Shelby Davidson, Jennifer T. Butcher Nov 2018

Rural Superintendents' Experiences In The Application Of Principle-Centered Leadership At The Personal And Interpersonal Levels, Shelby Davidson, Jennifer T. Butcher

School Leadership Review

Covey ( 1990) suggested that to achieve success in leadership, one must identify core values and principles and ensure that managerial and organizational systems are aligned with these values and principles. These values explained by Covey in principle-centered leadership are built upon the foundation principles of trustworthiness at the personal level and trust at the interpersonal level, which allows for empowerment at the managerial level and alignment at the organizational level. Covey explained that trust or the lack of trust is the foundation of success or failure both in relationships as well as business, industry, education, and government. Combs, Edmonson, …

Leading Through Following: Understanding The Intersection Of Followership, Leadership And Collaboration, Jonte' C. Taylor, Doris Hill Nov 2018

Leading Through Following: Understanding The Intersection Of Followership, Leadership And Collaboration, Jonte' C. Taylor, Doris Hill

School Leadership Review

There is a popular saying around education that, "a bad principal can convince a teacher to leave a good school; while a good principal can convince a teacher to stay at a bad school." In a blog post titled Teachers Quit Principals, Not Schools, Barnes (2017) writes about teacher and administrator interactions and how those relationships effect personal decision-making and school climate. Both the popular educational saying and Barnes's writing, while not directly, speak to the relationship between leaders and followers and how that dynamic sometimes plays out in educational settings. Broadly speaking, the dynamic between leadership and followership is …

Metacognitive Awareness And Mindset In Current And Future Principals, Tara L. Beziat, Yvette Bynum, Erin F. Klash Nov 2018

Metacognitive Awareness And Mindset In Current And Future Principals, Tara L. Beziat, Yvette Bynum, Erin F. Klash

School Leadership Review

Metacognition is a key component in education, yet little is known about whether or not instructional leaders are metacognitively aware. Metacognition is described as thoughts about one's knowledge and control over their own cognitive processes (Flavell, 1979). Kuhn (2000) indicated that metacognition develops from an early age, and asserted that the more explicit metacognitive thinking is, the more effective one would be able to engage in metacognitive thinking and control of their cognitive processes. Some examples of metacognitive strategies include planning, monitoring, and evaluating, and can be used by educators or students (Fathima, Sasikuman, & Roja, 2014). Metacognitive strategies should …
