08. Environmental Policy And Activism, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

EnACT

Policy based on the environment has been fluctuating significantly through recent history. Up until a few years ago, many people still genuinely did not believe in the process of climate change and the effect of mankind on the planet. While some people are still hesitant to believe that climate change is as important of a topic scientists are mostly at a consensus that climate change is real and an imminent threat to the planet.

IMPACT

In this module, students will learn the importance of story writing when writing data articles. They will also learn how to use data truthfully, and to its fullest. With this, they will then be able to display their data more effectively, making them good journalists. However, there are lots of bad journalists out there. These journalists skew data and manipulate it in a way that is more beneficial to their standpoint. It is important that students are able to not only identify and avoid these articles, but also don't make skewd visualizations themselves.

07. Transformational Leadership, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

CORE

The term transformational leadership was first introduced by James V. Downton in 1973, and has been the focus of researchers since the early 1980s (Northouse 161). After years of success and prosperity, the United States economy crashed into what is now known as the recession. The president at that time, Ronald Reagan, put forth many changes, such as cutting taxes and building up the military to help the country recover. During this time, the US imported more goods than it exported, therefore endangering manufacturing sector. Through such abysmal times, it was important for President Reagan and his government to motivate …

08. Leader-Member Exchange Theory, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

CORE

Leader-Member Exchange Theory became the focus of research in the late 1970s. Before the LMX theory, researchers thought of leadership as a process with consistent relationships between a leader and every follower. LMX changed that idea by theorizing that a leader has different relationships with each of their followers. Early research focused on the formation of in-groups and out-groups while later research shifted the focus to how LMX changed organizational effectiveness.

05. Transactional Leadership, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

CORE

Transactional Leadership was first defined by Max Weber in 1947 as, “the exercise of control on the basis of knowledge.” The transactional leadership style was used extensively after World War II in the United States when the government was concentrated on rebuilding and needed a high level of structure to maintain stability. Twelve years later, social psychologists John French and Bertram defined the five bases of power, later revising them in 1965 to add a sixth power. In 1978, James McGregor was the most prominent author to argue that transactional leaders needed to be of high moral standing and act …

Healthcare Organizations And Succession Planning, Michael J. Smith Oct 2019

Healthcare Organizations And Succession Planning, Michael J. Smith

All Theses And Dissertations

Healthcare organizations have been shown to operate as big business, except for one area. Research has shown that healthcare organizations do not implement succession plans for leadership turnover, director level and above. There is a need for successful healthcare systems to implement a succession plan for these leadership roles. Without a leadership succession plan, a healthcare organization can be caught in a bind and short-staffed. A system without a succession plan can also experience severe turbulence, which can lead to lost revenue and a decrease in customer and employee satisfaction. Nursing has had a successful succession plan in place for …

Development Of A Teacher Dispositions Framework, Traci Johnston Walker Oct 2019

Development Of A Teacher Dispositions Framework, Traci Johnston Walker

Doctoral Dissertations

Evaluating a person’s dispositions is complex and problematic, considering the affective nature of these invisible traits (Diez, 2006; Wilkerson & Lang, 2007). Teacher preparation programs are responsible for developing critical dispositions in their candidates and ensuring candidates have acquired them before recommendation for certification. Furthermore, school administrators must ensure that the teachers they hire have the right dispositions before placing them in a classroom with students. Valid and reliable instruments must be used to measure teacher and teacher candidate dispositions.

The purpose of this study was to identify a finite set of dispositions critical for an effective teacher and to …

An Examination Of Efficacy And Resilience In College Students: Influences On Socially Responsible Leadership, Paula Berry Atkins

Doctoral Dissertations

My study explored socially responsible leadership and its relationship to leader efficacy and resilience in college students. The investigation also examined the role of gender and race in these relationships. The study employed the Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL), which assesses student and educational outcomes relevant to the values underlying the Social Change Model of Student Leadership. The MSL utilizes the Socially Responsible Leadership Scale (Tyree, 1998) as a foundation but also includes measures of leader efficacy and resilience. Utilizing archival data from the 2015 administration of the MSL, my sample (N=840) included equal numbers of males and females equally …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Academic Entitlement And Education Financing Among Undergraduate Students, Nicola Ifill-Fraser Oct 2019

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Academic Entitlement And Education Financing Among Undergraduate Students, Nicola Ifill-Fraser

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Academic entitlement among students is a growing problem and concern for universities. Students with a sense of entitlement towards their education believe that positive academic outcomes are owed to them and should be awarded, not based on mastery of educational content, but on non-academic aspects of education, such as attending class, participating in class, or paying tuition fees. Additionally, academically entitled students have unrealistic expectations about the role of instructors and demanding attitudes and behaviors toward faculty. The factors precipitating these actions and behaviors appear to be multi-facted and remain unclear. To add to the growing body of literature on …

Leading Organizational Change: A Qualitative Examination Of Experiences Of Traditional Public School Principals, Nikeshia Leatherwood

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

The Every Student Succeeds Act has set the course for new accountability measures for school and system leaders. How principals lead organizational change might be key to the success their schools experience and the achievement results of their students. This phenomenological study examined the professional experiences, leadership trainings, and strategic initiatives of traditional public school principals who led organizational change efforts that resulted in two academic rating increases within a three-year period. Five principals, representing elementary and high school, were interviewed to collect data on their experiences of leading successful organizational change. Using Moustakas’ (1994) phenomenological method, rigor was established …

An Exploratory Study Of Private School Admission Policies For Students Of Same-Sex Parents, Homosexual, And Transgender Students, Karen Kay Caroe Oct 2019

An Exploratory Study Of Private School Admission Policies For Students Of Same-Sex Parents, Homosexual, And Transgender Students, Karen Kay Caroe

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

This mixed-methods, non-experimental, exploratory study investigated the private school admission policies related to the admission of students from same-sex families and homosexual or transgender students. The US Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges (2015) has had far-reaching consequences for Christian businesses, organizations and ministries. As the rapidly changing socio-political environment embraces LGBTQ concerns, private religious schools need to re-evaluate their admission policies and prepare to address new types of admission decisions. The theory base in this study was the evolutionary theory of social change. In this present study, the results of a nation-wide, anonymous on-line survey (n = 80) …

Leader-Member Exchange Theory And The Use Of Reinforcements On Employee Performance, Pagecarol Woods

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

Every organization desires to improve performance. Understanding how the employees within the organization are motivated and operate is essential to improving their performance along with the organization’s performance. Relationships between leaders and the subordinates are vital to the subordinates’ performance, and these relationships may change the perception the subordinates have of their reinforcements. The purpose of the study was to assess and predict supervisor-subordinate relationships with the use of reinforcements on the subordinates’ performance.
